The town of Puerto Limon is actually a dusty, small port on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. It caters mainly to the cruise ships and coastal freighters that hit the port for a day. However, when looking for action all roads lead to the American Hotel, located directly across the street from the main bank. Girls are young, pretty, and very plentiful. Just grab a seat and watch the action. If one doesn't offer herself to you shortly, just go to the bar and tell the bartender which girl you want. It's easy, they all wear numbers.
The prices are low; the girls are very passionate (kissing, etc.), though most do not speak much English. I, myself speak little Spanish, so we mostly used sign language to make ourselves understood. I belive that one sign may be universal. In the bedroom, which of course is right upstairs, we both knew what to do. The entire hour and a half was fabulous and only cost $30, definitely worth the effort. However, if I was to spend any length of time in Costa Rica it would be on the other coast or in San Jose. Probably more to see and do.

I lived in Costa Rica fo most of 2003. The Caribian side gets less tourist because it is much more rainy. There are buses frequesntly which are virtually free (I'd guess $5 to $10 although I never made that trip by bus).
If you rent a car it's about 3 hours and very scenic. The road goes through Baullio Carillo Rainforest. It rains a lot but there are instant waterfalls along the road.
I don't know mongering in Limon but I suppose travelling companions would be less expensive and more natual than San jose. Getting away from tourists is an important goal top really enjoy Costa Rica. The golf coast is lots cheaper than the Pacific due to lack of tourists.
Enjoy.

I spent three months living in San Jose way back in 1982. There used to be a "jungle train" from the capital to Limon.
I was surprised at how English was almost as widely spoken as Spanish over there.
Back then, I equated living in Costa Rica to living in the US in the 1940s. I'm sure it's changed tremendously since then. The only place that I remember that I still read about on this board is Key Largo.
