Some of you may remember Thomy's Paprika in San Pedro. This was the private house where the owner, Thomy, would prepare whatever it was he decided to cook that day and serve it up in his living room-turned dining room. The price for dinner was reasonable, and he had a fine selection of wines to accompany the meal.
Well, about two years ago, Thomy just up and disappeared. I received an email from him a few months back, telling me that he was back in San Jose and had bought La Bastille. I was in town last week, and stopped by to check it out.
La Bastille has been on Paseo Colon for 50 years, and all the cab drivers know where it is. The menu was originally French-based, but Thomy has added his multinational touch to many of the selections.
I had the Pate for an appetizer, then the French Onion Soup. The main dish was Sea Bass in a saffron and artichoke sauce. Chocolate mousse was my dessert. It was all delicious.
Neither my friend or myself drink alcohol, and the total check came in at just around $50 for the two of us.
NOTE: I know that this sounds like an ad, but the guy's been selling me dinner for years and I'm a big fan of his. He deserves the business -- the food is good and the price is right.
