In a few years I will be able to spend extended periods, perhaps up to 3-months at a time in Panama. I may fully retire in 3-years, or take another part-time job, or seasonal employment to supplement my income for perhaps up to 10-more years. I'm 42 now...I do not want to work past the age of 55. But, I definitely want to spend more time in Panama without living there year round.
I've considered purchasing and keeping a small apartment in Panama, but it seems it would sit vacant for equal amounts of time. Additionally, small $40-$50K apartments in Panama are really nothing more than 3 or 4 small rooms shoved together like cells in a prison. Apartments in the $100-$150K range are not only more spacious, but the floorplans are a little more interesting. Yet, though I could lay-down $150K from my retirement savings to buy an apartment...this would be inefficient use of my money. I suppose I could rent-out the apartment to tourists to generate a little cash...but that would be a hit or miss headache with risk of assholes abusing my property.
As I thought about this, it struck me that others within this forum may have the same interest to stay in Panama for extended periods without living there year round.
In other words, instead of renting a hotel or furnished apartment where you do not accumulate any equity, why not find a few guys with similar interests to monger and live in Panama part-time, then collectively pool our resources to buy an apartment...then take turns using it on a scheduled basis? I suppose this is very much like a time-share...but in this case it would be private, and limited to only a few partners...perhaps 3 or 4 guys who each take turns using the apartment throughout the year.
Does anybody have any experience with this type of business arrangement? Please comment.
What are potential pitfalls and ways to resolve those pitfalls?
Thanks.

I have purchased an apartment in san francisco that will be completed in November--3 bed, 3 baths, 2k sq ft--maid's quarters--2nd story penthouse.
I am open to selling a fractional interest--25-50%--have a loan already lined--so doesnt require full payment up front.
drop me a line if you have an interest and want to know more.
