I grew up in Panamá and have been to San José many times. It is really a great place to hang out!

I have heard of a place called "The Green Door" in San José. I have never been there and would like to know if you have visited that place already. Also, what is your take on that place?

The Green Door has a checkered history. It was quite famous (or infamous) a few years ago, then was busted and closed down for quite a while for underage girls.

To the best of my knowledge, it is open again but I haven't been there and don't know anything about the current management, girls, or prices. Perhaps someone else has a recent update.

I have a little more info on the Green Door taken from a fairly recent post on another site by a highly reputable poster.

"The GREEN DOOR has reopened under name Club Chispas-have previously highly recommended this place in past, then they fucked me over, I slammed them as hard as I could, they got closed down-under pressure from Casa Allianza- and are now reopened under new name, same management. I did not go there, because of the "fuck me once, shame on you, fuck me twice, shame on me" attitude that I have. Heard two reports on place while I was there, one was from someone that sounded like they had a vested interest in the place and told me was great, and one from a TSMer that I just happened to run into that told me was marginal at best."

Rock, this is the best info I can provide, is consistent with the impressiuon I already had from the word on the street, an is wahy I haven't bothered to check them out. My advice is to forget about them. There are plenty of other places to go.

Plenty of Green Door Info at the old RedSnake site, if it's still viewable. I for one declined to try it because of it's checkered past. Don't need to get caught up in any political reprucussion bullshit about underage girls, whether it's true or a smoke screen. Several of the RedSnake posters including DearJohn loved the place and attested to seeing no underage girls.

I did see your post about the origin of the word "gringo" but the truth is that that this is a myth. No one is really sure of the origin of this word but the best guess is that is is a corruption of Spanish/Latin/Greek for "foreigner". See the following etymology from Mirriam-Webster: (Note- This isn't authoritative. Other dictionaries have different theories, but the truth is that no one is certain.)
Etymology: Spanish, alteration of griego Greek, stranger, from Latin Graecus Greek.
Date: 1849. Often disparaging : a foreigner in Spain or Latin America especially when of English or American origin; broadly : a non-Hispanic person.

TSM is a membership (pay) website for single male travelers. It has a lot of good info about destinations all over the world, but in my opinion isn't well-orgainzed. For example, if you search for information, no dates or posters names are returned, and often the titles give no real indication of what is contained in the post. Since their database is so large, you end up with a lot of useless, unreliable, or out-dated information and it takes a lot of time to do a decent search. I'm a member but don't post there anymore. I have nothing more to add about the Green Door. As far as I'm concerned, it's a waste of time and money, but if I hear otherwise on good authority, I'll check it out and post my opinion.

The green door has been closed for over a year now. The rent on that house, $3,000 per month, and the bad press they received, ultimately shut the place down.

Rumor has it that the Del Rey paid the police to raid it and tear up the house. They did a pretty good job.

It was a great place to go if you had a couple of hours to kill or more.
