If you are wondering why your entry has been treaded with such hostility than you may have misunderstood the purpose of Club Hombre. We are a community of Travelers, Mongerers, Traders, and conesours of women, cigars, spirits, and other distractions.

We share our experiences in a way that enriches the whole community and prevents the others from being scammed or otherwise paying too much for services at the same time avoiding being victims of crime while in a foreign land. If you want to offer a service to CH members it helps to get to know the community first and become a trusted member. Otherwise just start your own web site and pass out business cards.

When this guy initially was called out for his SPAM, and asked why his only contributions to the board over a ten-year period were SPAM, he had a choice, a choice that others in similar situations have faced here. He either could have acknowledged his error, and agreed he would contribute substantive information (thereby establishing himself as a member of this community) before offering his services here, or he could lash out at us saying false things like the only reason we were calling out his SPAM was because we were competitors trying to drive him out of business.

So, if you just left the USA a few years back when you were 21 years old, how do you have 10 years of experience with the scene in Medellin? I mean, other than a deportation, who leaves the US to move abroad at age 21?

Mid-way through the movie, there is an interesting plot twist that if left unresolved would have undermined the movie’s premise, and perhaps relegated it to “B” movie status.

A renowned scientist who specializes in research into Asperger’s syndrome finds out about the Asperger’s Pimp, notes that while he had studied many Asperger’s patients he never studied one who also was a pimp, and proceeds with great excitement to set up an appointment with our hero. On the appointed day, the Asperger’s Pimp shows up with a couple of skanks in tow, and submits to a battery of tests.

Sixty minutes later, the scientist is discussing his new case with some colleagues and says “Hmmm, I don’t know. What is strange is most people with Asperger’s syndrome keep it to themselves. This guy seems to want to broadcast that he has Asperger’s. At the most inopportune times he shouts out Asperger’s, as though he is proud of his condition. I can’t seem to figure this one out.” At which point one of his colleagues responds, “Have you considered that maybe rather than Asperger’s syndrome, this guy has Tourette’s?”

Now obviously, changing the name of the movie to Tourette’s Pimp would not have been politically correct, and would have likely destroyed the whole movie project. So this unexpected plot twist was a real threat to the viability of this project.

Fortunately (at least for the premise of the movie), it is later determined that having Tourette’s and Asperger’s are not mutually exclusive.

Apparently his excellent post meant nothing. Subsequently Don Marco posted 5/15 with still another great suggestion to allow you to redeem yourself [so to speak]. Again this was ignored. No one can tell everyone in this thread, many well known veterans of many crusades, to get fucked and not expect fallout. All of us here are like family, we've established our pecking order; sure we have our differences [we have some very entertaining flame wars], but until you've proved yourself and have been a contributor sharing posts, banter, and general discussions, your first impression needs to be somewhat better; it's damming and insulting. I can tell you that I for one do not fit into any of these categories. I am under 40 and over 30, a profesional businessman and engineer. My wife and I are a modern swinging couple and she is well aware of what I do as well as I of what she does.

Age doesn't have much to do with it. This was a case of a dumbass who thought he was being slick and ended up getting his ass handed to him. If I had to guess, probably a low-life who ended up in Colombia because he couldn't hack it in the states, and is living hand to mouth and trying to scrounge up a buck any way he can. You see this a lot in almost every foreign spot you happen to visit. They start off trying to be helpful and friendly, and to be honest, often they are. Sooner or later, though, and usually sooner, whatever money they have runs out and they start fucking over anyone and everyone they know just to stay afloat.

Not all expats fall into that category, but in mongering destinations, it's pretty common. Unless you're 1) loaded or 2) retired and drawing a pension/Social Security/401k or 3)working there for a US/foreign company and drawing US/foreign pay, you have to pay the bills somehow. Some do it legit and without fucking over friends and customers, others don't. For every guy like Don in Rio who rents out apartments and is legit, there are three others who would rip you off for a nickel every chance they can.

I am expat, and unfortunately have to agree with Cat - I hold a regular job, but many do not. They live in quasi or actually in poverty conditions barely able to make ends meet - I have met two that live in a Favela (Rocinha). Other teach english here and there, provide some guiding services, etc... for the most part just trying to a get a free beer or something out of others. Nothing romantic about being poor in South American country - I just do not get it! Overall opportunities for expat that do not have a regular job or transportable skills (like working the oil industry, or something) pretty much have a low chance of succeeding overseas without becoming one of those types of guys we typically try to warn about on this board. I avoid 90% of expats at all costs...

Here in CR, one need only walk into the Del Rey to find a few. I call then CRT bottom feeders. You can see them peddling viagra, or referring hotels for commissions. I wouldn't call these guys outright dishonest, but they're depressing, the say the least...

Many are pensionados, the Sportsbook industry is here, so you have many gringos with money as well. But yes, there are a healthy number of bottom feeders.

Most of the dishonest types gather around real estate. Like Marvin said, many are just broke alkies looking for a free drink.

The crew of bottom-feeding expats in Latin America (whatever the % of overall expats) can't hold a candle to those in Angeles City. In AC they gather around the bar operations, moving from bar to bar. And then there's the large group of old guys trying to make it on pensions that are too small to survive in even a third world shit hole like AC. They hang out in the bars and at places like Margarita Station, hoping to find someone to leech a few beers off of. AC, unlike Medellin, parts of Costa Rica and Rio, is hardly a place a sane person would choose to settle in.

Too many guys, who lack the where-with-all to live in a mongering destination, end up trying to make ends meet by preying on mongeres. It's both annoying and sad watching these guys trying to rip off the newbees.

Cat..yours,along with others opinions and statistics about the success and probability of Expat survival is very diheartning, and to be honest, kinda scary.. Considering I have been taking the last few months to "prepare" and settle my affairs in order to start my relocation to MDE.The more I think and picture those Americans I have met on my travels who somehow live in Costa Rica or some other place abroad and always wonder how they are able to do that the more I see how real it is that they are probably not living the dream, but like LovingMarvin said, instead more likely to be living an impoverished nightmare...

I've seen the people you're talking about but never really gave it much thought until reading your comments..Its very true, there are a ton of those that at one time had a great.."plan" having everything figured out only to have months and if lucky years later...nothing figured out ...

Interesting how the things that are so "simple" are well known but as soon as someone spotlights it, it totally puts things into perspective..at least it did for me (hope that makes sense)

Don't get me wrong - I have met some good Expats, but mostly those that work with multi-national companies and were transferred, or work in the oil industry. The problem with the rest is fantasy easily outweights the realities of actually trying to make a living - plus, if all you do is associate with hookers and pimps it will just suck you into a dark hole.

If I lost my job today, I would be back on an airplane back home tomorrow...ending my expat adventure.

I can't speak to Colombia, but I am sure it is very similiar to Brazil - there is a reason why many Brazilians (and other South American's) try to come to the states. Opportunities are limited - salaries are low, and especially in Rio cost of living VERY high. Not sure how the average Brazilian can make ends meet.

Also the base line for any decent job that pays more then R$1000 is a Bachelor's degree, with a healthy dose of "connections" that can help you land a job in a company.

Better to be poor in the US or Europe, then in South America....

Living the expat dream requires $$ - that takes a good job, a decent retirement income, or just having alot of money saved up. If you have neither, that dream will turn into a nightmare very quickly. Good luck in finding a good job...at least one that pays anything close to a reasonable salary.

Lets also keep in mind what brings us all together on this board - ho's.... they also cost $$. So if the income is lacking, that will greatly curtail availablity of those girls... Then most likely they end up with just one girl anyway and live their South American ghetto dream...poverty sucks!!

A general rule of thumb is that mongering destinations are for spending money, not making it. If it was easy to make money in places like Colombia and Costa Rica and Brasil and everywhere else, then the vast majority of the population wouldn't be flat broke all the time.

Even if you go down and try to start a legit business, the locals will do their best to pry what money you have away from you. You're certainly welcome to start a business, you just don't seem to be welcome to actually earn profits doing so.

Joseph, I didn't reply to your other thread, but in your case, you really need to reevaluate how you want to go out. Dying in a third-world country with the jackals following your every move, just waiting for you to kick it so they can grab whatever you have left, does not appeal to me. I don't know what your financial situation is, but I think you're better off just sampling as many locations as possible for short periods of time, then get your ass back the States when the medical issues can no longer be ignored.

Some open Inns, bars, restaurants. But they don't understand the 'culture'. Which is a way of saying that the locals don't consider stealing from gringos actually stealing. Their time is worth very little, so they rarely respect yours.

They expect you to "keep an open mind" (stay gullible) time after time of getting burned until you go broke. Then, either sell your business to a local at a fraction of it's value, or sell it to another gullible gringo with fresh capital to pilfer...

That's doing business in Costa Rica in a nutshell.

I do believe Colombia has a better history of fair play (or more severe consequences for foul play) than Costa Rica. So the basic agreement is more tangible.

That said, there are many expats in CR that are quite honest. But most of them don't live anywhere near the Del Rey...
