Try a crash course with Pimsleur for about 30 minutes per day. At least you will know how to find a bathroom and order off of a menu.......!
Only about 7% will know any English.
Or, try to hire a local guide/interpreter that can show you around.
If not, you will be the "pig that they pork today" (local saying/idiom)...and it won't be a pleasant visit!

Well, I have been to Cartagena a number of times in the last year and speak very little Spanish. Read the Cartagena guides.
I always have a small calculator on me to negotiate prices--works will if you do not know Spanish. On Holliwood Playa, you can talk to Jaison--he speaks English. Read the threads on pricing.
Rent from Juan or Mary, hit Holliwood Playa, read my thread on 'hunting in Cartagena'. It is fairly easy--

I have a buddy in Carta who saved me a lot of hassle on my first trip. His girlfriend (which I knew) hooked me up with for my stay. Now at this time he's looking for work so he can pay his tuition for college (he is an accounting student). I wrote about him in my report (see my Carta report). Asking 300,000 pesos for the trip if it is a week or less (that means you can split it if you are going w/ another monger). Just hit me up and I'll make arrangements. Good for 1st timers in Colombia and don't want to deal with the hassle.
