I happen to work very closely with an English speaking MD/Gyn (also has a Harvard MBA and PHD from Northwestern) who told me yesterday that she received a report from the ministry of health that said 30% of Colombians have AIDS and most do not even know that they do.
Mant get tested but do not return for the results.
Guys, that is right up there with some African countries.
I know it is difficult to get it from heterosexual relations but why risk it?
Suit up when visiting Col.
Just an FYI from your on the ground resident.

Anyone who believes a report that "30% of Colombians have AIDS" is obviously not 'that' educated. (no comment on the qualification a Harvard degree represents)
The real HIV statistic for Colombia is about 0.6% of the total adult population, and more than 2/3 of those are men so the adult female rate is likely closer to .2%.
Of course the rate among hookers is undoubtedly much higher.

I agree, 30% is a bullshit number.

If 30 percent had AIDS, I'm guessing that would translate into somewhere around 50 percent having HIV. And as to having AIDS but most not knowing it, that also is farfetched (as opposed to having HIV). I agree a 30 percent AIDS rate sounds ridiculous.
Perhaps the statistic had to do with something along the lines of the percentage of IV users who have HIV, or something else very different from an overall population statistic.

I agree, that number is just silly. Maybe 30% of tranny prostitutes, 30% of male prostitutes, but 15 million people?
I'm going to go with these stats...

I'd also buy that 30% of the people that HAVE it dont know they have it...but no way 30% of people have it

Bad news for those of us who have been banging street girls without a rubber for years.
But 30%? No way.

The CIA WORLD FACTBOOK for COLUMBIA reports:
HIV/AIDS - adult prevalence rate is 0.5% (2007 estimate) #71 in the world;
HIV/AIDS - people living with is 170,000 (2007 estimate), #34 in the world;
For what its worth, the United States rates worse in both categories #70 and #9 respectively, also 2007 estimates.

Just to correct the math....
Assuming a 50/50 male/female population, if the number is 0.6 of the adult population and 2/3 of the cases are men, then the rate among men is 0.8 and among women is 0.4.

Guys, couldn't agree with you more and like many of you, the rate she quoted sounded ridiculously high.
There is enough doubt and data to suggest statistics to the contrary, so, ink I'll ask her to produce the source document/data to which she referred.
Could be interesting! Colombians do lie very easily......LOL

Clearly a mistaken quotation.
I can, however, believe that 30% of the Colombians who have AIDS don't even know they have it.
