O alguém pode ajudar com um bom hotel em Porto Allegre? Seria uma grande ajuda. Eu serei aí em direção do fim de fevereiro.

Here's some hotels I recomended to Athos. Whoever takes my suggestions, send us a report on how many fleas you picked up from these places...
Hotel Tips: You are definitely best off staying in the Centro, if only for being
centrally located for most of the boites, etc. that you are going to be hitting. You'll have to take a taxi to Gruta Azul and the other places on Av. Farrapos,
but you wouldn't want to walk or stay there anyway (there are some fleabag
hotels around there, but by day, the entire area is a very run-down commercial district
- tire stores and that sort of thing). Likewise, the best nightspots are
in Cidade Baixa or Moinhos, all close to the Centro. OK, there's nothing worth
doing at night in the Centro (and it's dangerous to walk),but the Centro is
relatively small and a short cab ride to anywhere worth going to. And there's
more to do during the day, so there you go. That being said, here are my suggestions:
My favorite Hotel: Hotel Conceicao. This is where I stay in POA if, for some
odd reason, I'm not staying at home or with friends (my house was under repairs
for about two years, hence lots of hotel stays). Get an executive suite on
a high floor in a corner. Nice views of the city and river in a centrally
located spot, it's a businessman's hotel, there should be no problems with
girls, but ask first. Very good cost/benefit ratio. Here's their website,
although it doesn't have a lot: http://www.hoteisconceicao.com.br/center_br.html
My next choice would be to get an apart-hotel (like a small apartment, they
have kitchens and small living room, which you yourself might not need, but
they also don't fuss about guests... besides it's fun to start f-ing on the
sofa and then move on to bed, not to mention tht you can burn your own food when you are in the mood), here are a few choices:
Hotel Lar Residence: http://www.hotellarresidence.com.br/
Porto Alegre Residence Hotel: http://www.residencehotel.com.br/ - this is
probably the best one.
Apart Residencial Jary - don't have a web address for them, look 'em up on
google.
Lastly, the 4-star hotels: Plaza Sao Rafael and Hotel Everest are the most famous. IMHO, the extra money isn't worth the extra fanciness, but take a look, they're both online (I'm too lazy to re-find the websites, though).
There are TONS of other hotels in Porto Alegre, anything with 3 stars in the Centro, Moinhos, Cidade Baixa, Bonfim, Petropolis (not Alta Petropolis!), or Gasometro neighborhoods is fine (in aprox. that order). If anything strikes your fancy, ask me about it and I'll tell you what I know - at least where it is in relation to the clubs (for instance, POA does have an Ipanema and a Copacabana neighborhood, both of which actually have beaches, but are about 30 km out from the Centro).
Abraco,

Thanks. Do you know anything about some of the tours in the nearby mountains? I understand there are some nice places to visit there.
If you were a tourist not chasing women, what would you do in PA?
I will have a lady friend with me when I visit so I will not be visiting the places you would if you were mongering.
Thanks for your help.

>If you were a tourist not chasing women, what would you do in PA?
...I'd be a native chasing women! hehehe, I'll put some touristy stuff in my mini-report, suffice to say that Porto Alegre doesn't have a lot of touristy stuff, although it has great nightlife, good parks, etc for walking, and great restuarants.. overall, a good city to live in. The West Coast equivalent would be maybe San Francisco without the landmark attractions. As for the mountains, you have a choice of either transplanted Italians or transplanted Germans (that would be me... I have a house up there). All depends on what you like, really. Write to me at tomb@simarchitect.com, and tell me more about your POA stay and I'll make some suggestions.

Badseed hotels recommendations are very affordable under 100R.
I was really impressed with the Parthenon chain while in Sampa, value/cost combo with price in the low 100R.
So I highly recommend Parthenon which are everywhere in Brazil except Rio :-(

AS I was tellint Athos, his choice of Partenon in POA is ideal. A bit more expensive (by 20R or so) than my downtown choices, but so what? He can fill anybody interested in with the details, but it's on the main avenue in the Moinhos district of POA, the local equivalent of Jardims in Sampa or Lagoa in Rio - upscale residential with lots of nice parks, shops, and little cafes. Conveniently for us reprobabtes, the main nighclub and sauna (termas) district in POA is about 1 km away, a short cab hop.

Although I don't doubt badseeds picks, one that is not mentioned is Millenium Flats. It has smaller lettering underneath that says Blue Tree Hotels. It's one long block south of the Mall Praia de Belas. For $130 R I got a small kitchen with a stove, fridge, small bar with stools, a separate bedroom, fancy bathroom, small living room, a safe already included in the price, a tv in both the rooms, air conditioner in both rooms, double glass doors in both rooms leading to a common balcony, and a beautiful view. It is one mile south of centro, not far from Carmen's, but a mile and a half from Farrapos Av, but the taxi's are cheap.
The sunset in POA is described as one of the finest. Because of the park below and the river in front, together with the city a little to the side, it is quite a sunset. I actually took a picture of the sunset, they're developing now, hopefully they came out ok.

Yeah, IMHO "Flats" are the best option for staying in any big city in Brazil for over 3 days. It's like having an apartment with roomservice, and having a kitchen is always convenient. I say over 3 days, because you usually can't rent them for less, but you can always negotiate.
You were about 6 blocks from my house in Menino Deus. It's a good neighborhood, and there are some fun bars along Av. Getulio Vargas (my street). Just stay away from the streetwalkers in the area at night, they're all TV's. Also the Parque Marinha (across the street from the Bluetree) is nice for a daytime stroll, nothing special but good for shaking out the lead. Carmen's over in Cidade Baixa is a bit far for walking for my lazy ass (then again, I used to walk from home to the Centro every day), but it's a short cab hop.

Athos:
Go to their website, click on "promocoes," then on outro cidades click on "promocao de verao" underneath "Blue Tree Millenium Flat."
It'll show Superior single $135/double $147.
Luxo single$150/double $160.
I'm pretty sure I asked for a double because I was thinking of bringing a garota up. I checked my paperwork and I paid $135 per nite not $130.
I had Blame it on Rio travel books the flights, hotels.
The promotion is from 15th of December to March 9, so I may have to reschedule my trip to early March instead of late March.

If you want a nice Hotel that is guest friendly
in Porto Alegre try the Holiday Inn it is location about 10 minutes from the Airport in a very clean area of Porto Alegre the Clerks behind the desk will help point out where you can go to find the best in PA. Carmen's is one
and the most expends place to visit in PA where you will find 8,9 & 10's in Gruta Azul. I found the place good for a two day visit. The Holiday is super nice Hotel, it cost us $45 a night to stay and the quest will cost you $8.
Know your spanish of Portuguese before you go!!!

The hotels I have stayed at in POA are both in Moinho de Ventos (best area). They are the Mercure Manhattan and the Mercure Beverly Hills. I just stayed at the Beverly Hills. The visitor policy is no charge for short time, but 25R for overnight. This is not an issue for me since I only do short time. They still tried to charge me for a short time visitor, but removed it right away when I quetioned it. My first time in POA, I stayed at the Mercure Manhattan 3 years ago. The rooms here are larger and I liked the hotel a little better. I never paid a charge to bring a girl in, but I understand they have some type of charge now. Make your reservations on Mercure.com and try for the hot deal. It is usually available up to 1 week before your check-in date.
