Need a great wine store?
In the past I've just bought bottles at various little stores, like the nice ones on the corners of Puerrydon/Juncal (or is it /Beruti?) and Callao/Guido.
But this trip I discovered Winery, a chain of 4 stores. I shopped at the centro store, Libertador 500, right near GF's apartments.
FELIX there is a star. He know's his shit, and speaks perfect English.

Here's some shots of the large store:

Thank you for the info. I have been asking this question for a while. How do the prices compare to the supermarkets and stores you have used before?
By Flmonger on Saturday, May 31, 2003 - 01:35 pm: Edit
In Recoleta/Retiro, I have shopped for wine at Winery, Coto (Frech/Puerrydon), Disco (Quintana/Callao), and the mom & pop places I mention in my previous post.
The two grocery stores have much less selection. All prices are approximately equal, maybe Winery is ar$1-3 less per bottle across the board.

The Winery is a great place to pick up wine...another very good option is El Fenix, at the corner of Santa Fe and Libertad.
Weinert, Casa Lopez, Traipache are good vineyards, along with Chandon....

i too like weinert, both the cab and the meritage. can't say about the others.
lagarde and st. felichen are good lower cost options (ar$20-25 range), and domingo, zapata catena (angelica catena) and santa anita are good higher ends (ar$35-60) - talking cabs and meritages. i can't say anything regarding merlots, malbecs, or blancos.
if you want to have a more interactive discussion to determine which vineyards/verital/vintages you'll like, felix at winery is awesome.

I was looking on the internet at a Buenos Aires site, and it was mentioned that Harrods on Calle Florida was open on the bottom level.
Can anyone varify that for me?
Thanks

Is there a Hugo Boss store in BA?
By Yujin on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 05:06 pm: Edit
Bayboy -
Unless a new one opened up within the past year, the Harrods that I saw on Calle Florida was closed and boarded-up. It must have gone bust when the local economy went bust.

YUJIN
I was talking about a recent re-
opening of Harrods, within the last few months. Its not all that important, I was just wondering.
I'm going to BA in either Aug. or Sept.
Take care

Sterling,
You're wearing Hugo Boss these days? I took you for a Levis and t-shirt kind-of guy.

Bwana,
Jeans and T-Shirts are preferred, but when clients are thinking about dropping some bucks, I "suit up" for the game.

Hey Stirling: I just got a Charcoal Grey Hugo Boss suit at Bluefly.com for around $370. This is not typical in that I had a 20 percent off coupon and the suit was already on sale, but if you're looking for some of the higher-end stuff, you might want to check it out. Also smartbargains.com sometimes has good stuff.
OTOH, I got a great tailored suit in Bangkok for around $600 (i.e., the very high end there); maybe you should consider a trip to Thailand one of these days; I'm sure some of those "soapie" girls would find your fine-tailored look a turn-on
.

Sterling,
OK, that's reasonable. I've had to do the same thing myself a time or two. Just wanted to make sure you weren't going "Hollywood" on us.
Bwana (who has a garota with him in Hawaii right now)

LaGuy, - $370 is a great price! I just bought a Hugo suit at Off 5th (Saks Fifth Ave's Outlet) for $500. Still a good deal. I'll definitely do Thailand soon. For the clothes and the soapies. Ahhh...life is good.
Bwana, - You're in a Hawaii with garota? Who are you callin' "Hollywood"? What you've got going on is pretty decadent if you ask me? Keep up the good work my friend. You are a shining example to all of us.

Is Vigel available at pharmacies or other locations in Buenos Aires?
By Bwana_dik on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 01:51 pm: Edit
Sterling,
Sometimes a guy can't get to Brazil so he just has to bring Brazil to himself. The hard part was finding a girl with a US visa. Found a student at PUC in Rio who was up for an adventure and had a visa. What fun! We went to a churrascaria in Honolulu the other night...a pale imitation of the real thing but still fun.
Have fun in BA and Rio. Wish I could be there as well.

Travelmuch,
I'm assuming that Vigel is a name for generic viagra?
If so, yes, every pharmacy has it, but for me BsAs is hit-or-miss as to whether they'll sell it to you without a prescription. Just keep trying.
By Bwana_dik on Tuesday, August 03, 2004 - 03:25 pm: Edit
No, vigel is a gel/creme that is a sexual stimulant for women. It's NOT available in pharmacies anywhere that I know of; you'll find it in sex stores, a few drug stores in the US, and some health product stores (some GNC stores carry it).

I now prefer Ligerie over Winery for best wine store/chain in BA. Among their locations are across from Plaza San Martin near the origin of Av. Santa Fe, and on Av. Santa Fe on the north side somewhere within 2-3 blks of Callao. Their prices are very slightly better and they may have more selection.
I really like the Viņa d. Cerne 1997 Cab.
The market/cyber on Quintana, around the corner from Etoile, has a wide wine selection and some prices are inline with the larger chains. It is one of the only places for wines open on Sunday - I picked up two bottles of Weinert '97 Cab for AR$35 each, and two bottles of LaGuarde '97 Crianza for AR$33 each. If you like port, try the Zaccardi fortified Malbec called Malanado, AR$50.
By FLhobbyer on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 - 10:24 am: Edit
Note, that's Ligier, not Ligerie. The Santa Fe location is on the corner of Callao (Callao 1111), not 2-3 blks away.
I 'negotiated', mentioned that they don't offer "tax free" refund, and they gave me a 10% discount (half-case mixed).
