Hi Everyone - Second Post.
Rio newbie here, about to take his maiden voyage in March. When I went to Thailand, I had a great "Sanuk" map which laid out the location of everything for the hobbyist. It really helped me out as a first timer.
I think I've pretty much read every post here and have seen no such thing for the Rio first timer (or x-timer), so I thought I would take the initiative and make one. I collected a bunch of maps off the web and will start to place things where I think they belong. Once I have a rough draft, I'll post the link and I hope everyone can help make this a reality before I leave in a month
Thanks for all the great info here too!

Great idea, Dood. I will assist however I can - cartography freak that I be.

Excellent idea. If we could get the bus routes on it, we would have something unmatched. Problem is Rio is pretty damn big from the maps I have looked at. May need to break it into sections.

Holy Cow... I like this thing. Let's save our dinheiro for garotas.

Well.. Verson 0.1 is ready:
That "Airport Zone" and "Ipanema" maps are pretty big... over 100k - 300k. I think once we get locations finalized I'll be able to shrink them down to a reasonable size.
It took me a while to find decent street level maps online. I think these are pretty good though. Let's see how I did considering I haven't been there yet!
Places I couldn't find:
Night Clubs:
Help
Barbarella
Frank's
La Cicciolina
Doma
Please feel free to suggest whatever else should go on there... With exact locations of course.
The Maps
I'm going to take hombre up on his free web space offer and get them off AOL.

Very nice Dood, I was dreaming of this tool when I was in Rio 10 days ago....I'm going back and will put them to good use....
I did not find it difficult to locate Help, Barbarella, Franks, etc....
But I DO(OD) appreciate the "geographical orientation" of the termas locations.
I did my own crude paper version of this....but I had to be careful...I had wifey with me....
when I return for Feb 25-28 - no wifey~smile
Great job, and you get my vote as an honorable mention for Monger-of-the-year for this significant tool.
now...if there was a hand-held garota-interpreter/negoatiating tool....smile

Dood, if I'm not mistaken, put Help at the 1st square above no. 3 and Meia Pataca on the 1st square above that.
This is cool. Nice job, guys.

Thanks for the updates and praise.
Once things get "finalized" I'm going to make an IPAQ version. I have PocketPC 2002. If anyone is interested I'll post those as well.

How about adding metro stops on these maps if metro stops at any of these termas???
Great maps btw.

Thanks for working on this project.
The north copa map just cuts off the locations of Barberella and Franks.
I think that you may have missed on the Termas Aeroporto. My recolection is that is located just above the letter a of Bria Mar.

Excellent idea Dood...having just returned I really had no idea where everything was in relation to my hotel..even though I was going to these places...just give the taxi guy the card and off I went..
By Dood on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 09:05 am: Edit |
Layne,
What card did you give?

By Layne87 on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 10:10 am: Edit |
I made up business cards with the address and phone number to where I wanted to go..ie.. all termas and Barbarellas and of course back to my hotel when I was finished....I spoke no Portuguese and this was essential.
By Dood on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 - 11:03 am: Edit |
Layne,
If you could give me the addresses of the places you went that aren't on the map, I can put them on. Also, I'd like to steal them to make cheat sheets for myself when I go in a few weeks

Dood - Thanks for the maps. You might want to change the title of "Airport Zone" to Downtown Rio/Domestic Airport.
Is your upcoming trip your first to Rio? You will love it.
By Youngtom on Saturday, March 09, 2002 - 09:08 pm: Edit |
On my first trip to Rio I didn't have a clue where anything was. All week long I took cabs around town to various termas. At the end of the week, I went up to Sugarloaf as the sun set and for the first time began to put together where various parts of the city were located.
Watching the sunset over the "Statue of Christ" as Rio light up for the night is something everyone should try to do. Very pretty.

I bought a good map of Rio at Barnes and Noble for $6.95. Made by a German company Berndtson & Berndtson, www.mapmyway.com. Pretty nice, laminated so sturdy and containing metro stops and other interesting stuff.
The Copa metro stop is closer to Ave Princess Isabel maybe 5 min, than Help disco, a good 15 min walk.

Yep.. My upcoming trip is my first, I've been busy but I should have a map update soon

Anyone know where I can get a city map of Salvador da Bahia?

There was a link posted on this site for a Brazilian map site that covered all of Brazil. You entered a state, selected a city and then could enter an exact address. Unfortunately, CompUSA trashed my hard drive, so I have been spending more time loading programs than searching here.
If anyone has this link, would appreciate it.

I just purchased the laminated street guide mentioned in the previous post. I had trouble finding a shopping link on www.mapmyway.com but eventually found the map here www.GoneTomorrow.com for 6.95 plus 3.95 for shipping. They call it Rio de Janeiro City Streets.

I am doing some planing for my first trip to Rio in 10 days. I came across a great map of Rio that is available online in pdf format.
The map is available at:
www.cityofnanaimo.com/SAmerica/RioDeJaneiro.pdf
or
www.mapmatrix.com/tmhtm/htmtm/18101.html

Hmm, why would the City of Nanaimo, a backwater town in British Columbia (Canada, eh), have a map of Rio on their site? A very nice map, by the way.

Thnx JRSX... great map. The best I have seen and in PDF file -- so it's really sharp even at 800%.
