Actually, there does not have to be the terma/low-budget place tradeoff described above. I usually hit the "low-budget" places before the termas open since the former are primarily daytime places opening around 10 or 11 a.m. I will add though that after a few days of termas I sometimes want a change of scenery and go exploring even after the termas open. I can't say that I have had uniformly better experiences at the termas than at the low-budget places; many of my best experiences have been at low-budget places although if you want a sauna, semi-luxurious bed, and so forth you should stick to the termas.
I don't, however, see the contrast between the two types of places as strictly one of how much you want to spend. At termas I always take 1-hour sessions rather than 40-minute sessions(assuming the suites are not all filled up) yet have had my share of R$20 and R$30 sessions elsewhere. For me it is not a matter of cost. I enjoy all types of experiences and also enjoy searching around.
The comparison to an ethnic restaurant is a good one. After a few meals at 4 or 5 star restaurants (which I experience on business trips), I sometimes long for a more back to basics type of place, sometimes even (God forbid) McDonald's (not an ethnic restaurant, however). While many may disagree, the termas may be like those expensive restaurants, they are nice to a point, but give me a change of scenery now and then (no rejoinders about how the "low-budget" places may be like a McDonalds with a cockroach infestation. I will try one of the dive places next week, just for the adventure. One point to make though - most guys have a variety of budgets to balance during the day. One is money and another is time, but a real important one is nut count. I go all-natural, no viagra or Cialis or anything, but even if you do, there is a limit to the number of nuts per day. For me, it's about five, so I figure one or two terma girls (3-4 pops) plus some late-night takeout service from Help or wherever (1-2 pops, for me one after waking up as well). So, right there, just say 4-5 pops. You have to remember too, the high overhead for Help - the girls have to pay entry fees, etc.

Interesting question Cato, hindsite is always easier then foresite. I am very sure I wouldn't of tried it the first time alone. I would say the 2 hardest parts are finding the active addresses and then finding the building. If you drop me in the correct building and tell me the apartment number no problem. One of the safest bets right now is "Travessa do Ouvidor" 37(?) (NOT RUA!! do Ouvidor)

Pretty much like a termas. You sit there, have a drink and chat with the girls. NO admission charge. R$ 20 for 10 minutes in a box with no aircon, shower only if you insist with the receptionist. But a good idea to check out a few girls first.

R$ 50 gets you 30 minutes in a real room with real walls and a real bed.

Hey guys, I am absolutely shocked the downtown apartments do not get more press here in this very active and schooled Rio forum. In mentioning to guys I have meet here in Copa out and about that I was going to take a tour of them, they seemed lost on the concept even though many have been here a few times. Today was my first experience with them. R65 for 30 minutes with a super bunny in the small (4x4 type cabine) and R100 for one hour in a hotel sized room with another awesome girl. Keeper: I would encourage you to give out the addresses. First, they are all published on the Brazilian forums and therefore are not secret. The only issue is how particular ones are viewed by us gringos, and there you can contribute.

Also, and I'm sure Don would agree, Don and his associates do not own the addresses nor are they "trade secrets." So, we would appreciate if you could fill us in on some of the details, as I did in a detailed report on some of these places I posted here perhaps three years ago (I believe it was my first trip report). I have noticed prices everywhere keep going up in Rio. Checked in to a different hotel, took a shower and by 11 AM was at Carioca metro station. Checked out both rua da Carioca locations, but found very poor options, so we went on to Princesa Leopoldina #9 in the middle of Praca Tiradentes.
