May/03: I tried out 5 A-Kilo places in Copa...
I'd rate all but one quite unsatisfactory - food was average at best, way over-salted, and really not so good. Unlike Recife, where I discovered many good ones, and two absolutely fantastic ones (Chica Pitanga & the one specializing in local cuisine... oxaox-something, a one word name...), I am not a fan of A-Kilo restaurants in Copa.
The one good one was Siquera Grill. Tons of food selection, I mean like 6 rows of buffets! Sushi, Churrascaria, 3 types of chicken, 3 types of potatoes, peixe brasilera, lobster thermador, Spanish paella, 4 types of shrimps, salads, everything! Tons of desserts and 20 different ice creams!
The place doesn't have the strongest A/C, but when I asked they sat me right next to it and turned it up for me.
The food wasn't real hot, but they warmed up my plate in the microwave.
Real coffee, not a machine that has pre-ground beans sitting around for who knows how long.
r$21,90/kilo, as expensive a a-kilo price as I've seen, but a quantum leap better than any other in Copa that I tried.

This is my preferred place to eat in Copa for the last SIX years. The food has always been good and service was excellent even when I arrived 15 minutes prior to closing..they left everything out until we left 45 minutes later. Two large dining areas, one has a large flat screen tv.( I watch the first two hours of the free live Rolling Stones concert in Feb 4 years ago). I do miss the days of 3.85R/dollar...It was hard to spend over $38R back then for sushi, 2 beers, meats, veggies, fruit, ribs, steak, rice, beans, desert, and coffee. Now with tip plan on about $50-55R.

Why don't you go across the street to Carratao where it costs a bit less and get all-you-can-eat that's 10x better than the meats at Siqueira Grill? Spending R$50 at a kilograma is sort of defeating the purpose of going into one - to grab a quick bite for not a lot of money.

To refresh my memory, which of the two--Siqueira or Carratao--is on the left hand side of the street as you are walking up from Atlantica? I used to eat quite often at the one on the left, and I thought it was pretty good.

I'm going to disagree here. The food at Carratao is fine but I prefer the meats at Siqueira Grill and I eat a lot of them. I normally get a few pieces of filet (mal pasado) with a good amount of salt and butter and it is alway always good, very good. I agree that the price is too high but I don't think it's accurate to describe Carretao meat as 10X better. It's not even better in my opinion.

LA, Carratao is the churrascaria, fairly small place on the left if heading away from the beach.
Mitch, I'm not saying Siqueira Grill is bad, I've eaten there dozens of times over the years. Just not in the last couple of years. I'll drop into Kilograma about once a visit for convenience reasons, but I find it pricey for what you get. Compared to other kilo places, Siqueira and Kilograma are the best, but also double the price. I find Temperate is pretty good, some of the smaller ones too. The chain Aipo e Apim (or whatever it's called) is pretty bad.
Carratao is one of my favorite restaurants, with the Siqueira location better than both the Lido and Ipanema branches. I generally request grilled baby beef and picanha especial and stay away from the beef on the skewers. The chicken, sausage, pork and turkey on skewer are really good though, and the hot mozzarella is awesome.

Yes, it was Carratao I used to go to a lot. The couple of times I went to the Siqueira Grill I wasn't as impressed, although didn't have a problem with the place. Maybe I just like getting served churrascaria style more than doing the kilo-restaurant thing.

I'm indiscriminate...I like them all., and don't have sepecially strong feelings about them.
If you go to their website, Siqueira Grill has a promotional coupon for 15% off. Print it and take it with you and you'll make a dent in the price.
There are other good por quilo places around town. There's a newish one across the street from Kilograma (forget the name) that's quite good, and I also like the Grill Inn.

Thanks, KJ. They have a few pretty hot waitresses on the staff as a bonus.

Almost all kilo places, including Siqueira Grill and Frontera, offer a "prato fixo". They do not openly advertise this, but just ask for it at Siqueira Grill IF you eat alot. It is one fixed price regardless of weight, also allows you to go back to buffet as many times as you want. Not always the best deal - I usually will ask for the fixed price if my plate is over R$30. Sometimes the fixed price is the same, or just a little more.
By Catocony on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - 09:35 am: Edit |
The fixed price does not include desserts or drinks, but they can be a decent deal if you're really hungry. Kilos are also great places to take girls since the wide variety of foods means they can eat their beans and rice and salad and be happy while you scarf down steak and fries or sushi or whatever.

Siqueira Grill also is a favorite of many termas girls. If you go between 2-3:30 during the week you will see some familiar faces.
The sushi also is very good.

I have been to Siqueira Grill a few times and its good. I prefer Bara Brasa on av. Afranio del Melo Franco. Its a little more expensive but the selection and the quality is excellent. Plus its in a nice area so you can walk around Leblon with you date and walk off the meal a bit.

Bara Brasa is excellent! The ambience makes it's a good pick for taking a date. Great selections and quality with friendly waitstaff that are very attentive, located in a nice area. Siqueria Grill is good for when your with the guys or alone and just want a good selection at a reasonable price, Carratao, Porcao,Kilograma next.
