I'm just sitting here blasting my Samba de Enredo CD & pretending that I'm in Brazil. Oh well - I guess that I will be in 4 weeks.

Anybody have any other recommendations on Brazilan music?

I LOVE BRAZILLIAN MUSIC! Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Ivan Lins are all class acts!

By Bendejo on Thursday, April 18, 2002 - 09:32 am:  Edit

I have a thing for forro. I picked up some bootleg compilation CDs when I was there and have made copies and sent them to friends. I like driving around playing them. The main instrument is the accordion, with triangle, sometimes a drum, sometimes full studio production, but I prefer the minimal. It reminds me of zydeco, but with a sensual and melancholy aspect to it. It's thought of as the music of the northeast, and Cariocas don't like it. Frank Aguiar and Fala Mansa are names to look for.

Sergio Mendes has put out two extraordinary, lushly produced albums featuring pop tunes by Ivan Lins, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, etc. They are called "Brasileiro" and "Oceano." His wife sings lead, and the sound quality is right up there. He is Brazil's answer to Quincy Jones, mixing it up with the best pop talent.

If any of you have been in a bar or club or whatever place that plays music in the last few weeks, or the weeks approaching, you have, or will hear this song. It's annoying as hell but I haven't been able to stop singing it for the last week. Enjoy the MP3..

Also, here are the words to brush up on your portuguese:

Você não acreditou
Você nem me olhou
Disse que eu era muito nova prá você
Mas, Agora que eu cresci você quer

I just picked up a bunch of CDs down at Rio Sul - Jom Jobin, Gilerto Gil, Ivan Lins, Chico Buarque, Marisa Monte, Milton Banana, and some samba stuff. any other must buys? Thanks to all for the tips.

By Traveller on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 10:34 am:  Edit

Youngtom

Djavan (double live album), Lucia Mello, Ivete Sangalo, Eliane Elias, Jobim/Morelenbaum Quartet (yellow cover), Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury, Leila Pineiro(Mais coisas do B.), Maria Bethania, Beth Carvalho, Carlinhos Brown, Ed Motta.

Make sure you get Anjo de Mim by Ivan Lins.

You must have meant Milton Nascimento???
Marisa Monte's white double album with the porn graphics is the best, mostly live.

By Youngtom on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 07:47 am:  Edit

Great list Traveller. I think that I've tapped out my CD budget for this trip. I've been trying to find that double live album by Djavan but none of the music stores that I've been in have it.

By Traveller on Saturday, May 25, 2002 - 08:18 pm:  Edit

Strange. Maybe you can get the 2 individiual ones, part 1&2, Djavan ao vivo. Awesome stuff, captures the essence of Brazilian joy, everyone sings along.
I have been to 3 Marisa Monte concerts in ATL Hall, Barra da Tijuca. Same experience.

Try to locate Nivaldo Ornelas & Ricardo Leao's album : "As Cancoes de Milton Nascimento." Beautiful stuff.

Don't forget Zelia Duncan. Her Greatest hits album, "Os melhores sucessos ...." is a good way to start.

In the States, get Sergio Mendes' "Brasilero" and "Oceano." You won't regret it, guaranteed. He is like the Brazilian Quincy Jones, gets all the best stars together in a lush production.

Some of my favorites not mentioned in the above posts include Caetano Veloso, Joao Gilberto, and Elis Regina.

BTW, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Tom Jobim are the same person. Most, but not all of his music, was written under the name Antonio Carlos and most of his own recordings are under his nickname, Tom. Also, jazz sax great Stan Getz has recorded a lot of great Brazilian-influenced music.

For those of you who like to listen to music over your computer, MusicMatch RadioMX is a great deal. You can listen to all of these artists (and thousands more, in every conceivable genre), with CD quality sound, provided you have a good internet connection. Subscription costs $10.95 for three months, or $4.95 a month if you pay monthly. They're currently offering a free 7-day trial. You can get more info at www.muscimatch.com. If you're a music-lover, you owe it to yourself to check them out.

One garota at Centaurus told me to get some CD's from Zizi Possi, female vocalist. I ended buying also CD from Gal Costa another female vocalist. Romantic Brazilian music. CD store has also some Brazilian compilations, similar to music played at Bomboa in SP, jazzy.

Athos & Co:

A site you may enjoy:

www.usinadosom.com.br

It's does live streaming of all kinds of music, lots of MPB. You have to join up to be able to create your own "radio" and it's all in portuguese, but you should be able to figure it out. If you need help, email me at tomb@simarchitect.com and I'll hook you up.

If you like Brazilian female crooners, try Adrianna Calcanhoto, Cassia Eller, some of Ivete Sangalo, or Vania Abreu.. and of course, Bebbel Gilberto. For something totally off the wall, try some "BR-Rock" - Engenheiros do hawaii (my favorite), Paralamas do Sucesso, Cazuza, or Barao Vermelho.

And a local favorite in Rio, who does a mix of styles, including funk, is Fernanda Abreau. Get the CD that has both "Dois" and "Sangue Bom."

Bossa Nova... which is a HUGE category. But try usinadosom and see what you like.

For those who want romantic music, check out the CD, "Talisma, O Melhor do Samba Romantico" I pick it up at the airport on my way back to the US. Wish I had it on my way in. I'll bring it on my next trip!!

By Nyl12 on Monday, February 10, 2003 - 09:12 pm:  Edit

I picked up the kelly keys CD just for the song Cachorrinho. Its about her talking to her "dog" and telling it to come here, sit and be a good little puppy. My wifey and many of the woman down there have this little dance for it. When I first heard it it sounded as the girl was saying Come here (In Portegusees) and give me all your money (in english).

It became my anthem for all of the girls there. "Come here you American be a good boy and give me all of your money"

Kelly is hot and like everyone in Brazil only 22.

it was just anouced that Kelly is doing a couple of commercials for aids prevention by using condoms. There was some criticism saying she was not a good choice and sets a bad example for young women. what a load of crap she is hot and very confident with her body... fems try to ruin everything.

I have a bunch of photos of Kelly from her Playboy shoot. If interested. Send me a message with your e-mail abnd I will forward them to you.

If she is the Brazilian Britney Spears, Britney has a lot to live up to. Kelly is fucking Hot. Better than Brittney IMO.

If you like brazilian rock/reggae/funk try O Rappa. Request "Hey Joe" at a termas and all the girls will get up and dance (as least used to). According to a friend in Rio, they will be coming out with a new CD soon, but don't buy there live recording (acustics suck). Cidade Negra is also a group that will get people dancing.

Any pagodeiros out there? If so, pick up Zeca Pagodinho. Never go wrong with Zeca.

Thanks for the recommendations, Anjinho. And I agree with Sandman about Adriana Calcanhotto (playing on my computer right now); very sexy voice. And I've found many of the garotas like Bebl Gilberto, someone who's quite popular in the US but virtually unknown in Brasil.

TIA,

By Sonnyp on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 07:29 pm:  Edit

jwadd,

the top floor room at club 6 has a trance/techno type room depending on the dj. the hip hop room below has become almost too crowded to hang in so overflow heads up stairs. check it out. its located in lapa and most cab drivers know where it is. bunker 94 in copa also has that type of music, but the scene is kinda dark and druggy, with a gay mix in the crowd. also very young scene. didnt dig it too much.

Sbronx77, I am like you I love that music whenever I go to Brazil to Rio I get tons of music (CD's) from Rio Sul Mall.

Sbronx:

1) Download and install KazaaLite (not Kazaa, it's full of spyware!)
2) Go to somlivre.com and look up whatever CD interests you, get a track listing.
3) D/L the songs, CD's etc you want with Kazaa

Simple.

Less work, a little more expensive, for $4 a month or so, join usinadosom.com.br. It' s a virtual jukebox, will stream just about any brazilian CD you an think of and lots of american ones. Buy totalrecorder (totalrecorder.com), it will capture any stream, intercepting it on the way to your sound card. Record CD's to your heart's content.

Of course, your trade-off is quality - streaming audio has less info (quality) than mp3s which is inferior to a full CD, but this isn't Chopin you're listening to, so what?

Enjoy!

Badseed -

Thanks for the heads up on kazaalite. I've used kazaa for a while now and every week i have to completely scrub my computer for adware and shit like that. It got so bad last month it slowed my cable internet connection to dial-up speeds.

By the way, if anyone does get unwanted spyware on their computer, "spybot search & destroy" is a great shareware (i.e., free) software that finds any of this nonsense on your hard drive and deletes it. good stuff.

Oh yea, I'm recommending Fernanda Porto, mix of bossa nova and electronic. Girls love track #7.

While we are on the topic of Brazilian music. I just want to let you know that if you are into electronic music at all, Brazil's DJs, DJ Marky and DJ Patife are currently some of the best Drum and Bass (or Jungle) DJs in the world. Extremely popular in England, and the nights they play in Sao Paulo at Lov.e Club (NOT Love Story, ha ha) are legendary. Check the remixes of Fernanda Porto's 'Sambassim' and 'So Tinha Quer Com Voce' to wet your appetite....

CDs: DJ Marky - Movement presents The Brazilian Job
DJ Patife and SUV - Drum and Bass Fiesta

Just a tip for you music-loving CH'ers:

For some crazy reason, UOL (Brasil's knock-off of AOL) is not presently charging to listen to their very good music library. Go to:

http://musica.uol.com.br/radiouol/

Type in your artist, track, or album into the search window (busca), click the button to "musico", "disco", or "artista" (track, artist, or album) and hit enter. It will come up with some hits, click on the speaker icon for whatever you want to listen to or the little page if you want a track listing. They also have "radio channels" with selections from various genres. Lost of american and "world" artists too... Anyway, enjoy it while it's free!

Lately I've been listening to a lot of music by Marisa Monte. Her songs were recommended by a Brazilian student I'm taking lessons from. Most of it is MPB and there are duets with artists such as Tom Jobim, Arnaldo Artunes and Erasmo. The 4 songs I liked the most are Velhia Infancia, Mais Um Na Multidao, Nao E Facil, and Ja Sei Namorar. They are very melodic and most of all it makes me long for Brazil, very nostalgic. It is also good for learning the language as it makes you listen to how all the words are pronounced in addition to learning new words, if you are in a learning mode. Here is a link to the website which contains the English translation and also lyrics to most of her songs.

I like samba, pagote, funk and brasilian rock the best. I have a bunch of cd's now and I listent to them sometimes when I am not in brasil. You can also download a lot of the music from kazaa or emule. Also, almost every popular cd, software, etc. is available pirated in brasil for a couple reais.

Anyway, funny story. So I had been going to a bunch of live performances of pagote and samba, the girls dancing, etc. and I really liked some of the pagote songs (at all the places the bands tend to cover the same shit). I bought a mix cd from the dj at Antigo but the quality was kinda shitty so I wanted to buy the originals. I went to a cd shop to looks for Gustavo Lins (Deixa eu te querer), Jeito moleque (Eu nunca amei assim), Sorriso Maroto (Me olha nos olhos) and Pique novo (voce gosta). All of these bands had the look equivalent of nsync or the backstreet boys in the united states, and I felt like a 13 year old girl buying the shit but the songs are kinda catchy. If you have time download them, all the girls know them and like them. Also, as far as brasilian rock and rap I hear the songs by Marcelo D2 (Qual e) and Pitty (equalize) a lot.

BTW, on the news the other day marcelo d2 was complaining about how he got caught in a blitz by the police and they held them for a long time for nothing and he was really pissed and was saying he trusted the bandits more than the police and how corrupt they were, etc. (which is not an uncommon comment).

there is also a really popular funk song right now that a lot of the girls play but I don't know the name of it. if i find out i will post it and you guys can download it from kazaa if you are interested in what the most popular funk music sounds like. the words are very dirty.

Jaspermack: A couple of the songs, if not more, are on a cd called Tribalistas, which was a group formed by Monte, Artunes, and Carlinhos Brown (who formed Timbalada). 1-2 years ago, the cd was played constantly at clubs and even termas, but now I hardly ever hear it.

I thought Axe was terrible the first time I heard it, but after watching the girls dance to it, it started to grow on me...brings back good memories.

I've only used LimeWire and never Kazaa because of all the spyware. Limewire is pretty decent as most of the stuff I'm looking for is there. However it can be a pain sometimes to wait for the download. How is Kazaa currently? Does anyone know how the 2 compares? I've also tried Bittorrent and can't find any Portuguese songs there.

Someone (Badseed?) recommedended this site for playing Brazilian music: Radio UOL. He also suggested using Total Recorder to record whatever you play on Radio UOL. It sounded like a good idea to me, and I bought the Standard version of Total Recorder, and it works well for me. Thanks to whomever (Badseed?) recommended this way of obtaining Brazilian music--for free, the cost of Total Recorder aside.
