I have my ticket to Rio for Oct 30 departure and a 15 January return. I will spend about a month in one of the intensive Portugese courses and am looking at a school in Maceio that gives slops, flops and 4 hours of classes 5 days a week for $1280/month.
Anyone have any info on the monger scene in this locale? As it is a port city, I suspect there has to be something but would like to get more details.

I am adding Maceio to a list of cities I plan to spend some time in. Anyone have any info on it? How's the non-pro and program scene in this city?

Never been to Maceio, but a photo prompted me to ask some local friends when I was in Recife.
It's a mostly industrial town, and ugly. The beaches are not so great. But this photo was of a beach about 1 hr to the north (3 hrs s. of Recife) - a large penninsula of pure gorgeous sand surrounded by beautiful calm water (no reef/snorkeling, no great surf, so i was told). But the photo made it look like a tropical paradise.
I don't remember the name of this spot, but my friends said it was a nice vaca spot, great place to have a garota with you, but that the rest of the area, including the city of Maceio, was not worth it.
Again, I have no first-hand knowledge to offer, sorry.

I had a 1 day stopover there last year. Flhobbiest is correct that there isn't a great surf, but there are some of the most beautiful calm beaches in Brazil long the tourist hotel area. One of the main tourist attractions is taking a ride on a flat bottom boat called a jangada. There are probably a couple of hundred of these privately owned boats along the beaches. About 1500 meters off the beach, there is a flat sandy plateau where the water is only about 3 to 4 feet high. The jangadas gather here, sometime up to 20 or more at a time depending on how many customers they can get (usually 2 to 4 people per boat), including a couple of food and drink boats. You can step out of the boat, get a cold drink and a plate of fresh cooked shrimp, and walk in the ocean a mile off shore. A great way to spend a couple of hours at the beach.
A number of people from taxi drivers to people at the hotel went out the way to boast about how safe Maceio was compared to the bigger cities. From what I saw, I would have to agree although I'm sure I was a long way from the worst areas.
I lost my notes on the 2 program clubs I visited. Any taxi driver knows how to get to them. Both are quite a distance from the beach hotels, maybe R$10+ by taxi. The club with the best looking girls is Cocktail. This is a small, old, dark tavern type of place with a small dance area that played loud techno music. There were about a dozen girls there, and maybe the same number of guys and the place felt about half full. I don't think there are more than about 20 girls on the busiest nights. Entry fee was about R$20 and drinks were between R$5 and R$10 for soft drinks and beer if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure I was the only tourist there, the rest of the guys seemed to be regulars. There were only 2 girls I was interested in and both were sitting in booths drinking with other guys. One left pretty quickly with her guy, and the other was a great looking 8+ blonde that was hanging all over her guy. I stuck around for about 1 1/2 hour hoping that the guy with blonde was just there for drinking and would leave alone, plus some of the other girls were giving me some nice lapdances while I sat at the bar and I was hoping some other great looking girl would walk through the door, but I ended up leaving without a girl.
I can't remember the name of the other club. It is located in a somewhat industrial area and you drive into a gated courtyard. The club is very small and there were only about a half dozen girls, none above a 6 on my scale. I only stayed about 5 minutes at this club, walked in, walked out and didn't pay an entry fee since I didn't stay.
There are a number of regular bars and restaurants along the main beach street with live entertainment and decent crowds. I stopped in at a number of them but I was looking for an 8+ and didn't find one that night. I was there midweek and several people said that the best action is on the weekends. Better luck next time.

Bomboa's new home or playground?
Your new home, from when to when are you in town?
What happened to our favorite metropolis SP?

Bought a beach side condo and car. Here to stay for good...and thankfully still working (albeit earning less) thanks to modern telecommunications.
SP is but a distant memory now ;-) Don't really miss it or Rio too much to tell you the truth.

You know why Maceio girls have flat foreheads? It'sfrom slapping themselves on the head and saying - "Dammit why wasn't I born in Rio de Janeiro?" (or anywhere else civilized).
Hehehe, sorry, old Brazilian joke (originally about Ceara), couldn't help myself. Enjoy the life!

Hmmm...flat chests definitely, not flat foreheads though ;-)
And a scattering of refugee paulista and carioca girls up here too!
Don't come for the pro-scene though. The quality of most whores here is comparable to the bottom 10% of terma girls. Yikes!

Maceio has it's advantges of course....
"O Maceio, dez muie p'rum homem so..." at least so the song goes. Is it true?

Just curious how you chose Maceio over the other towns in the Northeast? Might try to head up there at some point.

BS,
BS, you know that myth exists in every city in Brasil ;-)
But if you live here, it might as well be true. The non-pro action with cuties is just ridiculous. Worst mistake you can make is give them your cell phone...you'll never sleep!
By Badseed on Thursday, November 27, 2003 - 05:46 am: Edit |
Hehehe, but in the case of Maceio, it rhymes, hence the song. Well, I'm going to have to sneak up to Maceio one of these days, will have to think up some plausible excuse to give my wife. As I've written before, mongering is nearly impossible for me in POA, and going to Rio sends up red flags... but "Business" is always a great cover for Sao Paulo. Maceio... fishing trip?? Pity I don't fish...

You moved back to POA? Good for you, I'll be there visiting in a couple of months I think.
I have to say, conversing with gauchos in POA is refreshing compared to Maceio. Here, we have great beaches, nice girls, but a lot of the men here are ignorant beyond belief. Real bastards some of them ;-)

I spent a week in Maceio and thought the beaches were nice. It's a weird town in the way it is laid out. You just get turned around easiy... Great restaurants though!!

Can confirm that the quality of girls in the casas is pretty weak. I left without sessioning. This is not a place you come for the action. Maceio is not a big city by Brasil standards and is in the poorest state (Alagoas) in Brasil.
The beaches, on the other hand, are stunning. No surf, as there's a long fringing reef, but good swimming, sailing and diving.
I'm glad I went, but it is not a hobby destination.

Bwana_dik obrigado for the rpt. what makes its beaches striking is the radiant emerald green water. some street action around the beach between praia de pajucara & praia de ponta verde. beaches north of maceio - paripueira, sonho verde, santo antonio, japaratinga, maragogi - just avg. beaches better south of maceio - frances, outdoor action, many oceanfront pousadas.
& gunga, more upscale resort in remote area across river. to get there catch schooner in the morning in barra de sao miguel. no p4p.
