Non-Pro Bars

Since Cali is such a great non-pro city (and not the greatest pay-4-play city)... and since Cali has to be one of the easiest cities IN THE WORLD for picky up non-pros...

Here's some info on the best bars and clubs to visit, current as of my Jun/Jul-03 visit. The bar life is divided into the early slot, which starts as early as about 8p, and everthing must close by 2p; and the late slot, which is discos located out of main-Cali that are exempt from the 2p close rule. I suppose the Salsa clubs of Juancito, or whatever that area is called, fall into the late slot, but I didn't experience these.

La Casa de las Cervesas
A great outdoor/indoor (balconies) location for both beers (2,000, giraffa not expensive, they have all Columbian brands - Club, Costeña, Lgiths, Poker) and drinks (call vodka and tequillas, whiskey likely too, cuervo margarita 8,000). This place is famous enough that all cabbies know it.

Mysti-K
Pronounced (mistic-ka), this is the best disco type bar that is open in the early slot. It has a nice open air central area! No cover charge, drinks range from 10k for absolute/quattro, less than 5k for beers, 60k for small bottle of absolute (1/2 fifth?), 15k for red bull equivalent... Although the music is loud in most the place, you can find nice spots where it's not (e.g. balcony, outdoor table, etc.). Arrive after 10p, leave stay the night if you're not doing a 'disco', or leave about 1p to beat the crowds to the discos. Many cabbies do not know this place, as famous as it is (and we couldn't believe they didn't know it!), so note it's 2 blks east of Av. Sexta on 25th.

Forum
This is a disco/club nextdoor to Misti-K. Didn't do it, but it's rocking on Wednesday night which is ladies night -free drinks all night for ladies! Damn, the talent going in there the one Wed I was outside (going into Mysti-K).

OK, the Discos:

Baioa (or something like that)
This place was packed the one night we went, but it was so loud and all tables so we had no change to even approach girls. Thus, a total waste in my book... unless you are bringing a date to dance electronic music (grrrr).

Mission
In Yumbo, north of Cali, we hit this on consecutive Saturday nights. One had a party of visiting DJs, and damn, the hottest girls of my trip were there. I met the girl of my dreams that night (non-pro). Of course, lots of drug dudes and the entourages of girls... so be careful who you approach. One the next Saturday night, with no special event, the place was empty! So, ask around first... 15k cover charge for the night of the event, 10k for the 'normal' night. No cocktails sold, bottle service only (although not expensive). Only electronic music.

OXS (or something like that)
Nice spot up on the hill. More salsa than electronic music. Not the greatest selection of girls the one Saturday night we hit it, maybe on others... but great late spot if you have a girl (and she's not coming to your apartment...).

Noise
Lots of the girls go to this place. Music must vary by night or by time, salsa and/or electronic. We paid no cover on one Saturday, but I seem to remember a cover charged on one Thursday.

Another great 'bar' option for non-pros are the kiosks in the two malls - Unicentro and ChipeChape. The most famous of these (they have all of them in both of the two malls) is "Reggae & Pop". There is another one, next to a coffe kiosk more or less (in ChipeChape on the opposite side, next to the center area of the kiddie amusement rides area). They get busy on weekdays beginning at about 4p, and 5p-7p the really start to jam, and go into the evening, say 11p, especially on Wed-Sat nights. Saturday days are good too, say after 2p. Beers 2,400 I think, Baileys 5k (girls seem to always order this), Giraffa 2L 24,000, fresh limonade 1,500.

The best program for a Sunday is to hit Tienda Vieja by 6p.

Tienda Vieja full of non-pro hotties, but you won't find any (well, many) gringos here. Most any cabbie will know of it, but if not it's located at "Autopista con 44". They play salsa and other local music, and the girls love to dance.

The place is more or less divided into two section as part of the place has a very much indoor feel (hotter, smokier, the albeit high ceiling seems low) and the other half of the place has a very much outdoor feel (high ceiling seems not there, lots of breeze, feels like an outdoor plaza). There are tables everywhere, with two dance floors (one in each area) - but the tables are all taken by 6p.

Beers are cheap, an almost fifth of Absolute (what's the 4/5s a 5th?) is 60k, I don't believe you can order a cocktail. Food is lower quality (think bar food). The place is next door to a rather well known and very good restaraunt called Ranchero de Jonas.

Closes after 11p, although it peaks before 10p. This is a Sunday place, although maybe open Saturday... not any other days/nights.

Cover is 3k.

Hmmm, no one posts in this Topic - is it worthwhile for me to add updates?

Definetly I am going there for 2.5 weeks in a couple of weeks, not really interested in the working girl places.

Here's some updates and some new info:

Mysti-K sucked on Thursday night, it was empty...

Forum next door was rocking!, lots of pretty young girls. I thought (from Jul/03) that Wednesday was ladies drink free night, and thus the night to go there - but this Thursday was really good.

Both these places have outdoor areas if you like fresh air (warning if it's raining) and are not your typical large disco type place (e.g. Mission, Baiao). I really like these two place better, and they are in the 10p-1a slot vs. post-1a destinations.

The place I knew as OX (Jul-03 visit), up on the hill in Memba (or still Yumba?) now has two different outdoor places on the complex… I don’t remember the name of the new one and I didn’t see a sign for the place I know was OX but may have changed its name?… both looked pretty good, and B did a walkabout before we committed to either with cover for us and dates.

I finally found a bar on the Sexta that I liked... a bar, not a club or disco. It's called Barclays, and it's maybe between Calles 19-20 or 20-21.

I was there with my GF and B.player was solo as his date blew him off last-minute (sounds like South Beach, damn). We sat at the bar and drank beers, while B.player hit on a number of girls and basically took home the hottest single girl there (there were pleny of dates/groups). The girl, with her two friends, was visiting from Baranquilla. B probably bought 3 rounds, getting her nice and happy, and she went from being the coldest in the group to making out with him. At that point her two friends left to go home, leaving her there alone with him (like you’d see that in Miami – the girlfriends setting you up vs. cock-blocking you!). He said she was awesome in bed, totally GFE, into all kinds of sex, and a total non-pro. I saw her the next night walking on the Sexta with a dude, without her girlfriends, when I was with my GF who had just finished work at 10p and wanted a quick bite to eat… hahahaha

Beers were like $5.000 each, what a great deal.

Watching rock music videos on MTV2 on a large screen projection is popular here - stuff like Guns and Roses, Nirvana, Floyd, Pearl Jam, etc.

Tienda Vieja is as FLhobbyer describes it above, they play mostly Salsa and Merengue music, they also play some tropical music with the occasional Latin and English pop track. The disco is open on Saturday nights, so probably is open on Friday nights as well, no cover charge on a Saturday night though.
Only problem with this disco is that the dance floor is a bit small.

Tropical Club is located by the football stadium, they play mostly Salsa and Merengue music, they also play some tropical music with the occasional Latin and English pop track.

This disco looks good and has a good layout, with plenty of room to dance, there are 2 floors. The 1st floor has a waterfall on one side and a fountian on the other, they have fans located close to them which blow nice cooling air if you are sitting close enough. On the 1st floor there are two dance floors and several smaller spaces to dance in. The second floor has plenty of space to dance and also is open around the main dance floor, so you can sit or stand and watch the people dancing below.

I went with three girls and we drank rum and coke for the night and the bill came to 72,000 pesos, there was a 10,000 pesos cover charge for each person, the tickets could be set against the final bill.
