Has anyone stayed in the Savoy Othon. I am planning on going to Rio August 8 -16 and I can get a great deal on this hotel. Is it near hot spots? Is it guest friendly?

The Savoy Othon is on copacabana ave about a 4 to 5 minute walk from Help disco. It is in pretty good location. All your basic need stores are right there. I have never stayed there but checked out the rooms while I was in Rio. I think the rooms are kind of small. As of Jan 03 they did allow guests and I think the desk clerk quoted me 50 reals but I know for a fact that they are never consistent in there guests fee's. I met a fellow monger that was staying there and he was charged more than 50 reals to bring in guests. I would call or send an email if you want to make sure.

How can you get the number or email address?

I am not sure on how you could their direct phone number or email address. You could fire off an email to Bobby at Blame it on Rio for travel and ask him what the current info on the hotel is. I hope this helps.

I found this at: http://www.hoteis-othon.com.br/
I am assuming that "Savoy Othon" and "Savoy Othon Travel" are one and the same.

I stayed at the Savoy Othon for the past 10 days. The rooms are small and in poor condition. I will avoid next time.
On a positive note, I registered double and had no problem bringing in a guest at night with no charge added to my bill. I was told by the front desk that guests were even allowed during the day if you register double. All my activity was either short term at night (2 hrs) or TLN with guest out after breakfast.
The security was excellent. Guest fills out form and leaves national ID card at desk. When the guest leaves, the front desk calls the room to make sure everything is ok. I pulled a stripper out of one of the Lido bars on 5 or 6 differnt occasions and everthing worked out fine. It's just a shame the rooms aren't in better condition.

Mgmt must be changing their policies weekly or monthly? Too inconsistent for many!
Room wise, pay the extra 20 or 30 Reais and get the deluxe room. They are bigger, and come's with a couch. IMO the rooms are pretty decent for the price, if you can invite female guests to visit:-)

all this inconsistency is funny.
I called the hotel a few weeks ago, they told me the charge is R$ 100 per visitor, because they intend to discourage prostitute visitors. Same story about another Othon Hotel near Leme.
It seems that apartments are the way to go. Unfortunately, they have some security drawbacks.
(spam follows)remember I have a rental suite in my apartment.

So you get some of the advantages of a hotel (DSL, phone, free phone calls to US, personal advice etc) together with the freedom of an apartment. Though I need to ask you guys to be responsible in your behavior, in order not to endanger yourself and me too, being in the same apartment.
Actually, I do that rental stuff more because I like to incentivate more girls to drop by, then just for the rental money. So I hope you forgive the blatant spam

I stayed at the Savoy Othon from 7/23 to 7/31. They charged me $181R a night for a deluxe room. I was told at reception that the guest fee was $50R and only at night. I had two overnight guests, but no additional fees appeared on my bill. I had requested double occupancy from my travel agent but I saw no such designation on my bill. So maybe I was lucky or maybe I already paid for the privilege.
Also, the street noise can be overwhelming. I was on the 5th floor. I bought some ear plugs and I slept through the night.

IMO, you were lucky not being charged guest fee's.
And for a quieter room, ask for one in the back.

I stayed there for a week in 2004 and was told that the guest fee was about $15.00 USD per guest per night. I had 3 overnight guests and I had to sign a form each time. I assumed it was for the guest fee. When I checked out there were no extra charges on my bill!!! I'm going back in March 2006 and I'll let you know if they charge me guest!!! Maybe I'll get lucky again???

Any recent reviews on the Savoy Orthon? Girl policy specifically. Considering bidding on a package deal that also includes time in Salvador.
thanks
