For all those who would like to supplement their Portuguese lessons while they are here in Rio.
I now have a Portuguese language teacher that has been teaching Portuguese to foreigners both Conversation and Business courses, for the last 2 years in one of the best schools in Rio on my payroll. She will be available in the afternoons from 12 noon until 2 PM every weekday.. Cost is 100reais for one (1) hour a day for 5 days.

Anyone know of any intensive (i.e.- 4 to 6 hours grammar/vocabulary classes daily, live with a local family) Portuguese courses available in Brazil? I did a month long program for Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico and was pleased with the results. I employed a tutor for a couple of hours daily as a supplement and am considering doing the same for Portuguese in December/January, should my pending Colombia or Mexico job prospects not pan out by then.
Natch (as in the Spanish course) intensive interaction with and in the Thermas/Garotas/Indigenous People would have to be an important part of the learning process.Tough but one has to Practice, Practice, Practice. Wonder if my first language lesson might include how to say--- Oh baby… Ooh Baaby….OOOH BAAABBY!!!… ??

Tomjr2,
I have no personal experience with these people, but it might be worth checking out.

To Masomenos--Many thanks for the referenced site.
Good site and really hits the nail on the head. They primarily steer people towards Spanish programs throughout Mexico, Central and South America.
Re the Portugese programs, the price for 4 hours daily instruction in Rio plus homestay with a family including a private room and 2 meals a day is just a bit over 2k/month. Cost of the same program in Maceio,located a 2 hour flight Northeast of Rio, is even less.
Again Thanks a lot, I owe you one!

Did you see the prices for that Immersion class??
2Wks. $1155 with homestay (without homestay $855)
3Wks. $1595 with homestay (without homestay $1,145)
4Wks. $2060 with homestay (without homestay, $1,460)
Add'l Wks. $475
Did you also see that in summer months, homestays can be up to a 60 minute commute from the school.
Did you see the other prices and comments..
* Extra homestay nights: $22/night
* Private Classes: 4 hrs/day-60 minute sessions.
1 wk $680, 2 wks $1360, 3 wks $1860, 4 wks $2480,(+ $50 books).
Addt'l wks $620 or $36/hr thereafter if greater than 4 hours/day of instruction.
* Executive Intensive Program (One-on-One instruction, 7.5 hrs/day. Start any weekday):
1 wk-$1,395, 2 wks-$2,695, 3 wks-$3,795,
4 wks-$4,895
Hell I'm in the wrong business down here....
I have been thinking about doing a Total Imersion Language Program here in Copacabana with homestay.
Now that I see what this place is charging I will make some serious inquiries into this type of program....
I should be able to do it for much less than $2,060 a month...

By Kenn on Friday, June 28, 2002 - 04:35 am: Edit |
20reais an hour, but to get that rate you must pay up front for all 5 days = 100reais for the week.

I just took five private lessons with Kenns tutor earlier this month and its well worth it. Not to mention the fact that the teacher is 22 with blonde hair and blue eyes. The extra portuguese came in real handy during my week there.

Hey Jonny wait till you meet the new teacher I interviewed today....
I'm also interviewing a new female driver. Now you can have a nice conversation with a cute young thing on your way from the airport.
