I stopped by Franks about a week and a half ago. I thought I'd catch some samba dancing and the 1:00 am sex show.

After a few minutes, Martha, who had been wiggling to the music in front of me, took a seat on my lap. She spoke English almost fluently, and in the smoky haze, seemed sort of cute. After a few minutes of conversation, she offered to come back to my room for R300 + R80 barfine. I told her that I had been robbed the night before (which was true) and could only afford R150 + R80. She eventually accepted, but only for 2 hours. Meanwhile, she ordered some champagne for herself.

When I was ready to leave, the waiter told me my bill was R150 -- R40 for the two drink minimum (I had ONE diet coke), R30 for Martha's champagne, and R80 for the barfine. After throwing a fit, Martha offered to head over to my hotel room after the bar closed to avoid the barfine. I gave the fuckers at Franks the R50 I had on me and walked back to my hotel in Arpoardor. On the way, I was assaulted by a transexual who wanted me to feel his tits. What a nightmare.

At 3:40, Martha knocked on my door. In full light, she looked to be 28 going on 35, with lots of mileage. She carried with her an overpowering stench of smoke and puke. She wanted to crash at my place and screw in the morning because she was tired and had an upset stomach. Being pretty tired myself, I agreed. In the morning, she showered (at my insistence) but still smelled like smoke. She then inflicted upon me the the worst 10 minutes of copulation that I ever endured. I couldn't nut, and when my dick finally rebelled, I threw her out with the R150 I promised.

Frank's was the worst experience I had in Rio. I will stick to the termas next time.

Frank's is one of the few tourist venues I enjoy. You can see over a dozen girls, one by one, dancing naked. So you can really see the wares before choosing.

Now the price to take out a girl is R$ 30 for her consumption. No clue how they arrived at R$ 80 extra, must be the stupid tourist tax. Even Barbarella is cheaper then that.

Did you ask for the manager? Did you tell them you will post all this on the internet?? Who threw the fit? the girl??

Getting a girl there for R$ 150 is unusual. About the girl's quality, you probably did not check her out well enough while at the bar, and you had some bad luck.

They were just trying to scam you at Franks. If you question the bill they will change it. Basically you had to pay a two drink minimum, or R$30 for each of you. So your one coke costs you R$30, if you had drank two, it still would have been R$30. So her Champagne was R$30 and that one champagne should have been the total for her--the two drink minimum is the bar fine. So your total bill upon exiting should have been R$60.

I went to Franks last week with a group of 7 or 8. I watched the drinks (counted them on a napkin). The bill when we left was R$670. I knew that was wrong so started going over it with the staff at the cash register. Immediately the bill changed to R$430.

You have to pay attention in Franks or they will take advantage of you. For non-portuguese speakers, you will probably have to pay more cause you wont be able to argue with them. Barbarellas is worse than Franks about this stuff so really pay attention there. LaCicciolina (between the two) has never tried to pad my bill, but YMMV.

Regarding the price for the girl. R$150 is the true going rate at Franks, in my opinion. I negotiated several take outs for my buddies last week and they were all R$150 for all night. The trick is to negotiate the girl at 3 am when they dont have other options and dont have time to come back.

Yeah, I walked from Franks to Arpoador Inn at 3am. Except for an aggressive transexual near Help, it was a really nice stroll. At one of the drink stands, a bunch of local teenagers set up a boombox and were trying out some sort of Brazilian line dance. What a life!

I am pretty pissed at Franks. I know just enough Portuguese to know when I'm being ripped off. It was such a disappointment after my first time at Luomo's.

Brazil Specialist - it was me who threw the fit, and after people started noticing the ruckus, I got out for R50 (although that was all I had, hence no taxi fare). I must have missed the nude dancing. There was a group of samba dancers, some non-nude lap dances, a lesbian couple and a short sex show.

Next time I'm in Rio, maybe I'll try out LaCicciolina. Hopefully by then I'll know more Portuguese!

Guy's, I'm pretty sure the minimum cost to have two national drink's or one imported drink, or even one energetico is 40R plus 10% tip. From the previous 30R plus 10% tip.

Meaning your minimum charge to see a show is 44R. There is no extra barfine for taking out a Frank's girl. You just have to buy her one drink costing 44R.

So your minimum charge for you and your newfound date should be 88R. Its been awhile since I last picked up a date. But the garcons know me, and I used to pay 66R total for my drink's and my date's drink's.

No matter what, they do put on great show's!

Sitting here I dont remember whether a drink is 15 or 20 reals at Franks, but it is a two drink minimum. You are correct Sf4, there is no bar fine, but only a 2 drink minimum for her. However, if she orders one drink that happens to be more expensive, like champagne, then you dont have to buy two, as long as the price is the same as the two drink minimum. Make sense?

Btw, when I was there the lesbian show and the male/femaile sex show were still good but I thought the Samba show was rather boring.

My paranoia level was pretty high during my hike to Arpoador because I had been robbed the night before (my first night in Rio). I was on Rua Nossa Copacabana, about 2 blocks south of the cinema, at about 7:30 pm. I had been walking with a crowd, but was alone for a few seconds when some guy in his mid-20s put his finger under his shirt and started shouting, "Money! Money!" I gave him all I had in my right pocket - R4.00. He wanted more, so I gave him all I had in my left pocket - a stick of gum. The guy gave me back the gum, said "obrigado", and then wandered off.

A taxi driver saw the whole thing happened and started lecturing me in Portuguese about the perils of not taking cabs. I told him I would have taken a cab if I had not been robbed of my 4R.

The irony is that the robbery and my 3 a.m. hike were the result of deliberately limiting the amount of cash I carried. If I had carried more cash, I could have taken cabs.

Achilles, minimizing costs are one thing, but from reading these couple of posts, you're bordering on something else. You go to a puta bar with R50 when you know (if you've read here) how expensive Franks is. Then, you walk around without even money for a taxi.

Piece of advice - carry a few bucks with you, or start taking the buses/metro. You might get shived by some pissed-off bandito simply because he took the time to rob a rich gringo and you didn't have any cash. What you've described is kinda stupid. Sure, leave the credit and ATM cards at home if you're worried, but you are greatly increasing your odds of getting mugged/attacked because you aren't spending your money in the right places. Taxis are safe, cheap and plentiful, so use them.

Hey, you guys are getting the wrong idea! I am not a tightwad. I blew through R1,400 during my first two nights in Rio. When I got robbed in Copa, it was after spending more than expected at Monte Carlo (which to my astonishment didn't take credit cards). The second night I hadn't planned to stop by Franks. But after eating at a seafood restaurant in Leme, I figured that the R50 I had left over would be enough for a few drinks and a cab back to Arpoador. I did not know about Franks' drink prices at that time.

I used taxis extensively while in Rio and recommend them over the buses, which are supposed to be dangerous at night and not worth the price difference. And yes, the taxis are better than walking from $#!@#$ Leme to Arpoador in the middle of the night!

Achilles, most girls I know get into a taxi without a cent of cash. Then they park it in front of my apartment and walk up to get money from me to pay the taxi.

You could have taken a taxi, picked up money at your hotel and paid the taxi upon arrival. Or stopped at an atm with the taxi.

Of course, when it turns out that the girl cannot get the cash at her destination, she might have to pay with a blow job. Make sure that does not happen to YOU.

I'm not sure what was said, as my Portuguese skills are pretty limited. It all began when I was gazing at the beach. Went to Frank´s the other night. Was told 50R entrance fee for 2 drinks. There was two of us and was hesitant on the price. Then we went in for a free look and decided to take a seat.

One girl dancing and numerous others sitting at tables. Was wondering if this all there was to it, when they announced something in Portugese and the show started.

About 10 little skits. First couple were lame. My friend and I were giving each other looks. "are they serious about this" was what I was thinking. I went to Frank´s on Friday and Saturday nights. In 5 off season trips to Rio in the past 2 years, I have never seen this place so quiet. There were about half the people in the club that I remember in past visits. As others have mentioned, Rio seems to be very empty now. I don´´t know if it´s off season, weak dollar, crime, or combo of factors. I´m heading down to Sao Paulo tomorrow before heading home. I find myself spending more time in Sao Paulo and less and less time in Rio.

Buffer, Rio is very dead now. Last night at Help from 11P to 12p, there were 3 tables in the Terrace right next to the plants near the entrance
that were not seated. I have never seen that before in my life. The entire terrace was maybe 3/4 seated. And at 12P in Help, there were maybe 50 people. Beaches slow too. I was here in May last year and it was much busier.

I'll be there in about a month and the ghostown nature of Rio is starting to get me concerned. Should I drop off a few days and head to Sao Paulo earlier? On the other hand, Hemp's post about 4x4 sounded quite promising and Gr8ter's observation of a buyer's market also sounded good. I don't favor the garotas that are too professional and it sounds like that is the type to go to Spain, etc... so maybe I shouldn't be so worried, but 50 people at Help...makes for slim pickings for the muggers outside.

I will also be in RIO in June. Is it slow on the weekends also, or just during the week.

Franks Bar is still a great place to go, watch a live sex show, and have a pick of a great looking lady for the evening. (Yes, I said TLN) In the 6 1/2 years I have been going to Frank's, I have never had a problem with the bar tab, the waiters, or any of the girls. Maybe it because when I first arrive, I ALWAYS say hello to the bartender, I order my first drink from him, a drink for himself, and then point to the water who will be taking me my table. Just in case I bring friends to Franks, I keep track of all the drinks delivered by placing a straw (for each drink) in my pocket. When I get ready to leave, I pull and count the total number of straws againt the total number of dinks listed on the tab...works everytime. I also LOOK real closely at the marker on a bottle when they bring it to the table. (I have a another pilot who likes his scotch). The bottom line is to be a "smart gringo" in this or anyother bar...

So a smart gringo buys an overpriced drink in an empty bar for a favelado bartender? Tracking drinks is a good idea but putting straws in your pocket?

Well, lets see, if a club is trying to scam you and say you bought 10 drinks, and in rebuttal you pull out 8 straws and say "I only have 8 straws so that means I only had 8 drinks", describe how effective that is? Hey, you can scam the bar, actually order 10 drinks, but throw away two straws and only pay for 8. It works both ways, see?

Now, how do I track drinks? Easy - I don't get stupid drunk, and I remember how many drinks that I'm responsible for. Now, one trick is to tell the waiter that every time he brings a drink, bring a coaster and keep the coasters stacked. But straws?

Of course, the best way to not get clipped is to not go to clip joints in the first place.

OK... Seems like I am outnumbered by the guys with bad experiences at Franks. Personally, I have never been "clipped" in Franks. Must be the attitude! Also, If I do walk in at 2330 and nobody is there, I say hello to the bartender, say I will be back later, turn around, and leave. When I do return later that night, as I walk in, the bartender pours a drink, and has it in front of me before I get comfortably seated.

I was just passing on a technigue that works for me to count drinks served...in any bar.(The coasters are not a bad idea, but a little bulky)...Cheers

Straws versus coasters? Why not use the 'rainbow method'......after each drink have a girl with a different color lipstick suck your middle finger leaving a ring, when finished hold your finger high for all to view, all the while counting the multicolored rings. Guaranteed to keep your drink count accurate while getting your servers attention.

Coasters? Straws? The east way of tracking are toothpicks. The majority of bars and restaurants have them right there at the table. Since I tend to drink about 20 beers, I can't imagine asking for 20 coasters. Getting overcharged for drinks can happen anywhere!!!!!! I like 'Help' because I have to buy the tickets and have control.

I have been to Franks and was not scammed in the purest sense, but it does seem to be rather expensive drink wise. The majority of strip clubs along that area are in my opinion pretty expensive. But if you watch your consumption and don't buy drinks for every girl that sits with you, then a good time can be had.

I think my sense of what is "expensive" has also changed quite a bit since I first start living in Rio. Back in Miami, I would not have batted an eye at USD$5-$6 beers, but in Rio that it is just a crazy high price. Now when I go to some places and see beer at R$5, or $2.50 USD, I think it is expensive :-)

Oh for the days in 2001 when it was R$4 to $1 US.

Even during most of 2002, it was 3.5 to 3.6.

I remember being in Florionapolis in Feb 2003 and was getting 3.2.

Even in Aug 2005, rate was 2.7.

Oh for those days again.

The way things are going, Brazilian's will be visiting Mustang Ranch for $75 when in 2011 the rate is $4 US to R$1. At these rates, Jag will be asking his girl frind to marry him.

The real first hit 3 in late July of 2002. It hung in the 3.0-3.2 area through mid-September, then shot up beginning 9/19/02, and peaked at 4.03 on October 12th. I was in Rio at the time and it was glorious. I was doing nothing but duplas in the Sultan Suite at 4X4.

The real dropped some after that but stayed in the upper to mid-3 range through March of 2003, then dropped into the 3.2-2.8 range through the middle of November 2004. Then it slipped into the 2.7 range until late January 2005, and again started sliding down and ending the year in the 2.3-2.3 range. The rate stayed in the low 2s throughout 2006, then dropped below 2 and stayed there from mid May 2007 until Oct. 2008, when it bounced back up above 2 until May of this year.

The real never hit 3 or above in 2001. It peaked at about 2.6 in Oct. 2001.

2002-2004 was a great period to be spending time in Rio. I don't expect to see anything that good again.

So you would want to ask the waiter for the bill each time he brings you a drink? I would be curious to know how long before the waiter will lose their patience.... Remember this is Brazil, customer service takes on somewhat of a different approach.

Basic point of fact, eventually they are going to try to clip you. Catch you when you relax and try to clip you. Although when most charge 12 reals for a bottle of water they do not really need to pad the tab or try real hard.
