Also there is the world cup of soccer starting June 9th and ending in early July 06. Can someone confirm if boates/termas close when Brasil plays. If they go all the way, they would play 7 games total. Brasil will play on Fri June 9th as current holder.

I was in Rio during the World Cup in 2002 during the quarters, semis and final. Nothing was closed when Brazil played, but when the games were played in Asia, the games were on tv very early in the morning -- pre-business hours. I recall the Final was played on a Saturday. Maybe, it was Saturday morning in Brazil and early Sunday afternoon in Japan. I suspect the Brazil games will be on tv in the early or late afternoon in Brazil when the games are played in Germany. Of course, the termas will make sure the big screen tvs are tuned into the games. Brazil winning the WC didn't create as much a commotion in the streets of Copacabana as I thought it would -- probably, too early. The biggest celebration in Rio was in Centro. Of course, you could hear the shouts whenever Brazil scored. Thinking back, the WC wasn't a big topic of conversation in the termas either.
The day after Brazil won, there was a big parade and celebration in Brasilia and then most of the team continued onto Rio for another celebratory parade. I left for the airport around 4PM for a 7PM flight, and people were already lining up along Avenida Atlantico, and when I got to the airport, there were already about 20-30,000 people lining the street out of the airport. If I had headed to the airport a little later, I may not have made it. I recall that people in Copacabana were pissed because the freeway from the airport to Rio was so jammed with fans that the team bus never made it to Avenida Atlantico.
