Mustang, what are you doing New Years Eve afternoon? If you don't have any specific plans, come and join me at an afternoon pool party I will be having for non-pro Calenas to meet Americans - food, drinks, music and Calenas wearing thongs is what I offer <grin> Actually, I'm short on guys to this event - so invite other gringos to come.

Hello again. Seems I´m making it less often to the computer than I´d like these days. Feria, hot babes, showing new gringos around, hot babes (did I already mention that?)......

BATMAN - I´m there, Dec. 31. I´m really digging your 2 bodyguards. Thanks for the invitation.

GOMJABBER - Just now read the post here. Hoping you´re still in Cali, man. If so you can email me and tell me how to get a hold of you.

Let the bachannalia commence!!!!

Howdy fellas!

New to CH (found it!), first post . . . veteran monger, like the vibe on this board, as opposed to some of the others out there.
Well, I am in Cali (Mustang, I'm like within walking distance from ya'!) and have been for the last five years, expat from L.A. - if any other gringos coming to Cali need to be shown around I'd be more than happy to be your monger guide and overall wingman, my Spanish is perfect, I know the town like the back of my hand, and can leave my partner and workers in charge of things, so I have no schedule issues.

Give me a holler at mrh75@hotmail.com

Moe, I'm sure you'll be getting some inquiries. Do you plan on trying to charge a fee for your "services" in Cali, or are you simply offering hospitality? Etiquette dictates that no "guide" or "wingman" should ever be put out and have to pay out-of-pocket for showing a newbie the ropes, but setting up a for-profit arrangement is another story. I've been looking for a Cali local to make contact with for a proposed trip, but I've been leery about some posters who have tried to make a buck by sharing their so-called expertise. I would never deal with some guy who's attitude is "give me money and I'll show you where to go."

Maverick,

No, I am not planning "on trying to charge a fee for my 'services' in Cali" as of right now. If I were going to charge, I would not "try", I would straight up tell a fella ahead of time that I charge.
So, you've been leery about someone trying to make a buck? OK.
You COULD hook up with someone who *might* be 100% bilingual, who *might* know what he is doing in this town (as in where to go or not go, as in what days or what times - this IS Colombia, after all - you simply can't walk into any bar or any disco anywhere in town . . . for those of you who permanently reside in Cali, think of "Cañandonga" right by Calle 5 and Carrera 39 a couple of months back or so . . . I had seen that one coming, it was only a matter of time, considering the kind of folks that *used to* frequent the place) who *might* have all day to cruise with you (I mean, people do need to go to work to earn a living, unless they are their own boss) who *might* overall know what he is talking about and, last but not least, who *might* not be in some sort of kickback system with places in town because he needs the money.

Or, you could - conceivably - come down here on your own, and try to A) Effectively communicate with the people around you in relation to every single thing you may need or want B) Stay safe C) Find out where to go for *safe* mongering D)Communicate with the women once you get there E) Keep yourself from getting ripped off in every way possible, by memorizing the prices (and the many variables that cause said prices to fluctuate) for everything from cab fare to poontang, ahead of time. Even if you speak perfect Spanish, the locals are EXPERT opportunists, as soon as they hear a non-Cali accent, they try to pull every single nickel and dime con in the book. These are just a few things.

I fail to see what would be wrong with someone charging for guide services. I mean, if money is such a big issue with someone, that person probably can't afford this kind of vacation anyway.
People in every country charge for services of every kind. It's called capitalism.
I am a professional consultant. I charge for information related to my field. I can think of no professional in my field who would provide a day's work in exchange for, say, lunch and a couple of beers. Regular tour guides the world over charge for their services. Ain't no such thing as something for basically nothing in this world. You get what you pay for.
As far as "so-called expertise", I understand expertise to be the relative "skill, knowledge, judgement etc. of an expert" an expert being "a person who is very skillful or highly trained and informed in some special field".
Taking all that into consideration, in addition to the fact that there are no formal courses for mongering, I would have to conclude that an expert monger is someone who has been there (and is there)and done that (and is doing that) for years.
Whether or not that qualifies as "expertise" in someone's book is of little relevance, the person will still know a hell of a lot in comparison to a foreign (as opposed to a national) tourist.

And no, I am not looking to charge as of right now. I will let everyone know IF and WHEN and I do. What I would LIKE to do is meet some cool English-speaking mongers, have a blast, share what I know, and perhaps make some new friends. What with all the ex-con deport characters you'll come across down here when it comes to English speakers, it CAN get a bit lonesome for a gringo whiteboy.

Loving it,

MOETHEMAN

Your point is well taken. I guess it all boils down to whether you (not "you" personally) are in fact a straight-up expert or some wannabe guy pitching alot of sales talk. Cali is definitely a place where one would not just walk off the plane and start exploring on his own. I've just been concerned with the overall lack of true locals who have relayed useful info about Cali on this board and a couple of others. There just doesn't seem to be alot of solid info about the scene down there, and the "experts" who have offered info and services in the past here are, in my opinion, of questionable character and veracity. You strike me as a bit different, and I'm still interested.

Maverick:
I agree with you wholeheartedly on all points, particularly in regards the character and veracity of some of the "experts" out there. Email me and I will get some additional info to you.
