I plan on making many trips to VM and wonder if it possible to take bus. How close if possible will bus take me there. I am street savy and don't mind walking about a mile.

why do you want to go many times to VM? If you want to save money, there are cheaper safer and cleaner places downtown, starting at R$ 10.

You can go with the subway, I think it is Praca da Bandeira. If you are really corageous, don't look at all like a gringo, and it is plain daytime, then you can try to walk at your own risk for about 5 blocks.

I would not do it. Note: a taxi is problematic, as it is going the wrong way, so it actually goes about 3 miles long in roundabouts .....
