I talked with my namorada today in preparation for my upcoming trip on Thursday. She tells me that it can take upto four hours to get through customs and immigration.

Down ---I came in through GIG on Friday morning and was through and in the Taxi in 3 minutes flat. I didn't even have to take my bag off my shoulder. Sounds like some days are better than others.

Hemp,
I heard it was a 3 hour wait coming in.
Wonder how many people failed to board the plane.

Downandup - I arrived Rio on March 11th at about 12:00pm on United and was thru in about 30 minutes - no photo or finger printing. I left Rio March 26th with a 7:30 PM flight and the lines were 3 + hours. The problem is not the airlines but they only had 1 immigration officer for everyone. - Arriving was great, leaving was hell for more reasons as you can imagine. - Thanks Hemp

The word from the United ground staff is that the Federal police slow-down tactics comes and goes every few day's, then back to normal for a few day's!
As stated above, when they are on slow-down, get to the airport early. Or you "ain't leaving"!

Hemp is correct. The problem coming in depends on how many other flights arrive at the same time. If you are the only flight, the wait is less than 20 minutes.
Leaving now is a whole different nightmare.

I arrived in Rio on Masrch 19. It took me 1 hour and 10 minutes to get through immigration. They were fingerprinting and photographing and had only one agent there.
As stated above, getting out was a nightmare. I arrived about 5:30 on March 25 for my 8:00 flight out and stood in line for 3 hours and 27 minutes. It was brutal. The only time I've waited in line longer in my life was to get World Series tickets in 1985.
They would only take 10 people from the line in at a time. (Then I assume there had to be at least a five minute break from all that work.) My 8:00 flight left Rio at 9:30. Continental was not pleased to say the least. I guesstimate that there were between 1000 and 1500 still waiting in line when I finally got to the front. Brutal!
