Just got back from my first trip to Rio for the Thanksgiving week. Thouroughly enjoyed staying at the Debret in suite 1003. Great ocean view, room was quite large, bathroom and shower were quite nice, staffs were friendly( especially Luciana who works at the reception desk), and buffet breakfast was adequate. Overall good quality for the price.

Dino
Did you have two beds or 1 bed? I had 2 beds in suite 503.
Imho the corner room, second most expensive room, is the best room by far for cost/quality, big ocean view, big room, big bed.

By Hemp on Saturday, December 07, 2002 - 04:37 pm:  Edit

Best rooms at Debret are Suite 1102 and 1103. I stayed in 1102 and had bedroom, living room, beautiful view and huge veranda. It was fabulous doing a garota on the veranda with the beautiful ocean and the sound of the waves. They loved it and I was pretty good too. Hemp

Athos,

I had a king size bed (or at least it appears to be a king size bed). My friend stayed next door to me in suite 1002 and he has two twin beds. I'm glad I got the big bed because it made it a little more comfortable to have an overnight guest.

By Athos on Saturday, December 14, 2002 - 10:16 pm:  Edit

I was not too impressed by the Debret BUT it is very well located and has wood/parquet floor. Bathroom was too small, my bed was not that good. Great ocean view, good breakfast. Most impressive to me was the receptionist with glasses and that loirinha working for H Stern who never smiled, well at least my way.
It is a good deal if you stay at least 4 nights so you can get their package deal. The suite was about $60 a night but I much prefer the corner deluxe room, cheaper with even better view.

By Hombrecito1 on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 05:02 am:  Edit

Athos-you did get screwed on the room. There really wasn't a suite it was just a modified 2 bedroom. My room was smaller square footage probably, but had a more open feel to it. My room was ok for me, but the Debret is not a Luxury hotel for guys who want that. I'll still probably stay there next time. With the favorable exchange and a package deal, I was at about $40/night.

By Crafter on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 05:42 am:  Edit

Am confused..have been hearing that the Debret is now charging for guests, even if you book a double- is this true?

By Fooledagain1 on Friday, February 14, 2003 - 02:45 pm:  Edit

Stayed there last week did not charge me.

By Churchto1 on Sunday, March 09, 2003 - 07:55 am:  Edit

Room 1102 is a great room and a great value. They did charge $50R for an overnight guest. I once took a girl in for a quickie and didn't stop at the desk. No one stopped me. 1102 is the best room in the house with a huge veranda and patio doors overlooking Copacabana. AC in the bedroom could have been better but overall this was a very pleasant room.

I'm going to be in Rio from 2-6 July and was planning to stay at the Debret.

Unfortunately, their current web site specials stop at 30 June - does anyone know when they start posting specials for July? Should I simply wait until then to make my reservation?

Many thanks for any thoughts.

By Badseed on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 08:24 am:  Edit

July is high season (winter holidays) so there may not be any specials. Give them a call or an email and see if you can work something out.

So, I take it your "over" your CUba girl and ready for your next adventure? You're going to have a blast,

Enjoy!

By Davidd on Saturday, May 17, 2003 - 12:08 pm:  Edit

I seem to remember others saying emailing them is pretty much an exercise in futility, though.

I was over my Cuba girl about a month after I returned, since I saw the sense of some of the excellent advice I was given here. I would still love to find someone in a foreign country and "import" her here, but I also feel I need more experience with Latins before taking that kind of serious plunge.

Her main error was no sex more than once a day. I'm a horny bastard, even when not on vacation. What I need is a genuine nymphomaniac.

Does anyone have information about the "business rooms" at the Drebet? I found it curious that they hype them and then don't give rates. I'd love to have Internet access in my room when not mongering.

BS: I did not know that July is high season. I thought Nov. thur Feb. was the high season. Am I right?

By Badseed on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 11:49 am:  Edit

Call it a "mini-highseason" - Brazilians are on mid-winter break, kind of like the Xmas/New years season here in the States.

By Sbronx77 on Sunday, May 18, 2003 - 10:25 pm:  Edit

Ummmmm......then do rates and number of garotas go up?

By Badseed on Monday, May 19, 2003 - 11:58 am:  Edit

Yeah, somewhat... not as much as January/February, but a bit. And hotels are so strapped for customers in general that they are unlikely to hike rates too much.

BS

By Soprano on Friday, May 30, 2003 - 08:58 pm:  Edit

It seems they are very "vague" when quoting room rates and specific room types ? I have no idea why they do this ?? They refer to rooms that are not even listed on the web site, and prices from out of the air ? What's up with that ?
Can you negotiate once arriving at the hotel for a better room and a better rate ?
Also, just how is the breakfast and what are the hours of it ?

I'll be in Rio this December and want to stay in one of the Ocean front Deluxe suites (1102 or 1103).

What's the best way to get a reservation at the best price? Do I contact the hotel directly or do I go through an agent on this board? I'll be staying 4 nights.

By Churchto1 on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 02:46 pm:  Edit

The breakfast a the Debret is okay. Mostly fruit and sweetbread and such. I don't remember the times but it seems like breakfast was over by 10:30 or 11:00AM. The crowd didn't show up at Help disco until around midnight and it was about 3:00am before I got back to the hotel for a night of sex and debauchery. By 11:00am I was too tired to eat breakfast so I missed most of them during my weeklong stay. If breakfast is of a big concern the food in general in Rio is plentiful, cheap, and excellent. The only quirks are the small coffees and the strange Brazilian pizza (If you haven't tried one you should). If your like me you'll have to try and make it to breakfast only because it's free but I wouldn't count on making it to too many.

By Churchto1 on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 02:54 pm:  Edit

I forgot to add. When I made my reservation I sent them an email and told them that I wanted the deluxe suite with the veranda. I made reservations about two months in advance and stayed in the nicest room in the middle of the high season (Feb). I didn't have a problem getting it. Kind of surprising. I liked the room a lot but now, when I go back, I think I will just go for a regular suite and spend the additional money on babes and booze.

By Soprano on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 01:30 pm:  Edit

Does the Debret charge an extra fee for guests if you already are paying for a double room ? I seem to have received conflicting reports on this.

Also, will the Debret allow more than one guest at a time ?

By Sweetmesquite on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 02:23 pm:  Edit

1 guest only. usually guest fee even if paying for double.

By Fooledagain1 on Monday, June 09, 2003 - 07:35 pm:  Edit

S--- Some pay extra some don`t, i didn`t buti negoiciated that. All hotels allow oneguest only. Did you consider the Princess Copa ? 2 and a half blocks from beach, easy walking to and from Mia P. and Help. Brand new hotel, pool, jacussi, suanas, workout room, free breakfeast, get the suite, refer, microwave, stove, cups, glasses, plates, siverware, everythng you need to entertian and the maid does all your dirty dishes every day. Huge comfy bed. Go thru Bobby, if he doesn`t return your e-mail call him. He`s the no.1 supplier of guest to the Princess, ask for a double room with no charge for guest.

By Solid808 on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 01:26 am:  Edit

Stayed at the Debret a couple weeks ago and the room was booked as a double. I did not see any extra charges for bringing a girl to my room.

By Davidd on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 06:23 pm:  Edit

I emailed them asking about their "business room", which they pitch on the web site as including Internet access and so on, but it's not on their rate sheet.

When I asked them for the rate, they simply told me to look on their web site!

Anyone know what they actually charge for it?

Also, the rates from 1 July seem considerably higher than others have reported, and there are no specials listed on the site. It looks like the best value is probably the ocean view double room (I'm hung up on views) for R$257. So I'll probably just reserve that, especially considering that the USD is not doing very well lately :-(.

By Esdude on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 07:20 pm:  Edit

Davidd,

Check out www.blameitonrio4travel.com. They usually have better rates for the Debret than by going direct. They are also a little better at answering your questions. You'll get blue in the face trying to get direct answers out of the Debret.

Does Hotel Debret have hair dryers in the bathrooms ?

Also, is electric current the same as USA or do I have to bring a voltage converter ?

Thanks

By Costaricardo on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 - 07:04 pm:  Edit

I don't blow dry my hair and can't remember whether or not for sure that they had dryers,
But I think they do.
You do not need a voltage converter as is same as US.

Yes to the blow dryer in the Deluxe Debret room.

By Tight_fit on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 - 11:27 pm:  Edit

The receptor plugs look very different from our own but will accept your two (equal) pronged items. I tested all the outlets in my room and found them to be like your typical Nevada ranch pro. Very very loose. I ended up spreading the prongs on my extension cord slightly to get a strong enough grip so the plug wouldn't fall out.

By Sandman on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - 05:50 pm:  Edit

TF...read your last post then apply it to your handle...

Priceless!

By Tight_fit on Thursday, June 19, 2003 - 12:12 am:  Edit

Sandman, I tried that once but it didn't work. The female receptacle was US made and had those darn holes where one side is larger than the other. I just stuck my prongs in and waited for the juice to start flowing. Instead, I got yelled out for being a sexist pig who couldn't care less about women. Screw that. I was just trying to do what was right.

I came back for a second shot after arranging my prongs in their proper size and dirrection. Then I got slammed for no ground prong. That was considered another proof of my demeaning attitutde towards women where all I seem to care about, say them, is my own hard prongs and the hell with everyone else. I resented that as I have always used my prongs in ways that women would feel comfortable. You'll never see me forcing my prongs into a round bung hole on some recepticle. And when I am done I don't yank my prongs out with a pop and then walk away leaving a mess behind.

Being a nice guy with some nice prongs doesn't get you squat these days with many women. All they do is bitch. The ones made out of porcelan are the worse. Frigid cunts. Same problems with the ones on drugs. You drop in expecting a nice uncovered 110 watt buzz and the druggie burns you with a SDI infused 220 zap.

If all this keeps up I'm going back to dealing strickly with flashlights that use AA sized batteries. I did that for years and screw the bible banger retards that claim using a flashlight will make hairs grow on your palm.

By Sandman on Thursday, June 19, 2003 - 04:14 am:  Edit

ah ha ha ha ha! Well done TF...

By Soprano on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 07:12 pm:  Edit

I had a room on the 10th floor, I think 1010, oceanfront room. Hair dryer in bathroom. I did not need adapters or converter plugs for electric. Outlets accept either regular US style plugs or round type. No problem charging my camera batteries.
Also, paid for double room and was not charged any additional to bring guests up to room. Only drawback is they only allow one guest at a time. Breakfast is lame, but never really pushed myself to get up anyways for it. Food is cheap enough in Rio.

By Bull_winkle on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 03:55 pm:  Edit

My room at the Debret had a hair drier and electricity outlets that worked with all my US appliances. I was on the fourth floor, corner room with view of the beach and Cafe Alcazar.

TF, that was hilarious. I am sorry that you got short circuited. After that sort of disaster, I can see why you needed an outlet.

I think with rising guest fees and closing of the "double occupancy loophole", we all saw this coming. So now there's a void in affordable oceanfront monger-friendly hotels. Given lackluster reviews of the Luxor Regente, what's next on the list?

By Hemp on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 - 01:52 pm:  Edit

I just CANCELLED MY RESERVATION at the Debret after they confirmed via email no more female guests. I can't believe this bull shit - what do they think they are a Five Star Hotel. The only real thing they had going for them was location. I'll check with Don at Riotrips. Thanks - Hemp

Something MUST have happen at the Debret? maybe some guy got rip-off or got hurt really bad? I don't know I am sure whatever happen will leak out soon.

I remember in DR a few years ago when a new owner took over some of the hotel in DR the new owner spent a lot of $$$$ to remodel the places, also he wanted to change the image of the place to more of a family type of place and not just be known as a whore and monger hang out.

It will be interesting to see how things will go at the Debret with their new set of rules, will they lose $$$ or will they try to change their image.

When I've stayed at the Debret, most guests are families, couples...non hobbyists. I gotta think that the uptight North American tourists don't like sharing the elevator with some 50 yr old gringo with an 18 yr brasileira in tow. Particularly with the Debret's growing popularity with the Alcazar/Don crowd, my guess is they just drew the line.

RIP Hotel Debret

By Riotrips on Friday, July 18, 2003 - 02:38 pm:  Edit

Add the Rio Rioss to the list with the Debret. It has also cancelled it´s girl friendly policy we´ve been told.
The Veja magazine, local to the Rio area just posted an article listing the Debret and the Rio Rioss as girl friendly, so to combate the loss of the non-monger customer they have both cancelled their girl friendly policies.
If you still want oceanfront, try the Orla Hotel, if you don´t care about the view, go to the Princess Copacabana to www.promenade.com. Nice, new hotel for relatively little money.

Has Debret switched back to allowing guests ?

By Buffer on Wednesday, October 01, 2003 - 12:22 pm:  Edit

I stayed at the Savoy Othon this week and wasn't real happy with the size or condition of my room. I went around the corner to the Debret to check out the rooms for a future trip. I was told that even if I register double, I can''t bring in different guests each night. The second guest has to always be the same person. Cross this place off the list.

By Onewolf on Friday, October 03, 2003 - 10:04 am:  Edit

Last time I stayed at the Savoy they wanted R$100 per guest. Other Othon hotels were asking R$100 too. Has this changed?

By Buffer on Friday, October 03, 2003 - 11:33 am:  Edit

I registered a fict. person to obtain a double reservation at the Savoy. I saw some recent messages about the 100R charge. I asked about the guest policy when I checked in. The front desk indicated that since I had a double reservation, one guest was not a problem. I check out on Sunday. I´ll then know for sure if there are any problems.
I´m not real concerned. I got this room through a winning bid on Skyauction.com for a low rate. A few guest charges won´t break the bank.

By Undre60 on Saturday, November 15, 2003 - 01:56 pm:  Edit

Hey
Htl Debret is not Chiqa friendly. They only accept girls from 23:00 - 06:00. And only one! - You have to pay 70Real in addition if you bring someone up to the room. This is my experience from primo november 2003.

The hotel is not clean either!!! - use your shoes to avoid ilness!

By Turk5555 on Monday, April 19, 2004 - 09:05 pm:  Edit

It is so high school trying to get chicas by the front desk, or checking them in. Just get a regular Brasileira, bed down, pretend you are a husband, they will take very good care of you, give you all the sex you want, and won't have to worry about checking in the garota at the front door. And now you guys are bitching about the Debret not being so garota-friendly. Man, what a bunch of losers.

By Gcl on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - 01:42 pm:  Edit

Any Hotel will let you check in with a girl as a registered guest. Even a loser like yourself Turk.
