You've got a chica that you consider getting serious with. Can you do a private background investigation (i.e. she doesn't know) on her before things go too far? Is there a recommended service for this??

Mustang: why don't you do what the colombians do. They check out the family and not the girl. If the family is ok, then it is assumed you have an okay girl. This is not as silly as it sounds. Remember, behaviour is 40 percent genetic and the rest is learned. Assuming you operate from a genetically inherited base then you can expect relatively good behaviours and character traits.
The family is easy enough to check out. Ask the neighbours, stores, police check and their friends. Get the full picture and make your decision.
