I was in Sao Paulo for one night only on Thursday. After dinner with some colleagues we decided to hit Cafe Photo since I had never been there and come to SP so seldom that they thought I should give it a whirl. We got in the cab and told the driver to take us to Cafe Photo on Helio Pellegrino. He said he could not because it was shut down the previous night and is supposed to re-open in another location but it's not widely known where or when. Not want to waste a bunch of time, I said to just take us back to the Hilton Morumbi because Cafe Gauguin is just around the corner. He said that Gauguin had been shut down the previous week. I suggested we try Kilt but my local colleague didn't want to go all the way to Centro so we asked the driver what our options were. He suggested Romanza which was just a round the corner. Entry fee was R$70. Lots of girls, took home a Loira, yada, yada, yada.

So here's the question:

Was this cabbie scamming us just to take us to Romanza? Or is there something going on in Sampa with these clubs. What's the story? We posed the question to the waiter in Romanza and he said that there's a gay politician (no joke) who leading some crusade on these sorts of places. However, he went on to say that none of the gay clubs have been shut down.

That's almost a story in itself. When we first sat down we ordered beer. My colleague (a Carioca) had a very heated discussion with the waiter and a few minutes later the waiter returned with a bucket of beer. My Portuguese is not good enough to have followed all of the conversation plus I was preoccupied checking out the girls.

When a couple of girls came to join us at the table, my buddy went off to take a leak. I don't know why I didn't catch it right away, but while he was in the head, a different waiter came over with a bottle of champagne and proceeded to open it. He had the foil off and was proceeding to pop the cork when I told him to stop and asked him who ordered the champagne. He said it was for the girls and I asked him how much the bottle was going to cost? When he told me that it would be R$800 for the bottle, I just about soiled myself. Luckily, my buddy came back from the head, saw the bottle and got involved in the conversation. He asked the waiter the same thing as I did and told the him to take it away then told the girls to get lost.

According to my Carioca colleague, this is a typical scam for foreigners. He went on to say that when we first arrived, the waiter tried to tell him that the bucket of 4 or 5 beers was going to be R$200. After he asked him to see the bar menu and talk to the manager, the waiter changed his tune and said it would only be R$100 for the bucket. Still a bit steep for beers.

In the end, we were only there for about 90 minutes and had the bucket of beer plus one orange juice for the Loira I went home with and one Red Bull and whiskey for my friend's girl, the bill came to R$180 plus another R$140 for the two of us at the door. Not the cheapest place in town I imagine.

In hindsight, I think we should have gone to Kilt. When you consider what was probably a line of bullshit from the taxi driver (about CF and Gauguin) and the price game at Romanza, the place is a rip off joint and should probably be avoided.

I have never visited Romanza largely because it has the reputation as a tourist trap/ripoff joint. More than any other place in Sao Paulo, cabs try to lure you there, which IMHO says it all.

RioJake: Yeah, I thought so. I haven't been to Sao Paulo in almost a year. With the dollar in the current shape, I am really at a lost as to how to enjoy myself if I ever go back. The Nestor Pestana area where Kilt is located is still worth a look I guess as is Rua Augusta.

Cafe Photo - $190R for four drinks. Expect all the girls to be asking $500R. If you are not on expense account then you might just offer $400R instead of asking the girl. $350 would be for the lower level girl. That is the info on GPguia. I am stay here on Av. Paulista and have no plans to go there. You can find just as pretty girls at Connection. Bomboa is not much better in price. But you do get dinner and a live band.

Traveler: Unless I missed something you posted the above both in the Bomboa and the Cafe Photo threads. Although you refer to Bomboa in both posts, what you describe, most particularly the R$200 cover for 4 drinks--sounds a bit more like Cafe Photo.

He must be talking about Cafe Photo. At Bomboa you can put you entrance fee toward food and drinks. Of course a beer was $35R last time I was there. He must be think of the tickets Cafe Photo give you when you fork out the $200R.

After hearing about Cafe Photo for so many years, I finally walked over tonight from my hotel - and was not impressed at all.

The pricing has apparently changed, it's now a flat R$150 entry, which does not go towards drinks or anything. Waters are R$10, sodas and such R$20, beers start at R$25 I think. Girls were mostly quoting in the R$500 range, but to be honest, very few were worth more than a few hundred. A lot of older garotas, I would say less than half the ones in there were really doable.

Maybe it was just a bad night, but I can't recommend Cafe Photo.
