How about a collection of the various ways to request Brazilans to stop talking? From a polite "shhh, not now" to "shut your fuckin' trap"?

By Gr8ter on Sunday, May 01, 2005 - 07:00 am:  Edit

cala a boca, or just cala boca, the most common one, most will just say escuter-listen, and this is the one i would recommend using (escuta). take a few steps back and watch yourself after you tell a brazilian girl to shut up though! you have been warned!

By Sandman on Sunday, May 01, 2005 - 08:01 am:  Edit

make sure you are out of arm and foot reach....and never tell them they have 2 ears and one mouth and should use them accordingly...what a reaction that one got one time..he he!

By Abandonado on Sunday, May 01, 2005 - 10:25 am:  Edit

Best advice is definetly stay out of arm and foot reach... they bite also !!!
Cala boca is the harsh way. I think the more polite way is fica quieta. Unless you are wanting to talk .. I wouldn't suggest saying escuta because she'll be thinking you have something you want to tell her.

Thanks for the replies so far. Mind you, I'm looking for words for all-around, I want to be able to recognize them when I hear others talking to each other. As we all know these people can be LOUD, no eavesdropping required.
When it comes to Brasilieras running off at the mouth, I see many men turn deaf and ignore them, which is more my style.

Pimsluer handles this by telling a distraught woman in one lesson, "senhora, fique tranquila". That sounded a little heavy but maybe Brasilians can tell a woman to calm down unlike in this country where to do so will result in a hysteria attack.

OK, it's a slow Monday, I'll add my 2 centavos..

Hush up! or the equivalent:

Cale a boca (KAli a bow-KA) = shut up - rude
Cala-se! (KAH-lah cee) = shut-up - very rude
Fica quieta (FEE-ka keh-TAH) = be quiet - semi-rude
Quietinha (ke-TEEN-ya)= "little" quiet - a nice way to say be quiet.

"Fique tranquila" (be tranquil) is kind of silly, typical language book stuff. To say "cool it" or the equivalent, try:

Chega (shay-GAH) = enough! - rude
Basta (BAH-stah) = enough! - very rude
Calma (cahl-MA)= calm down - hehe, try telling this to a woman....
Fique Frio (Fee-key free-yo) = "be cold" = "chill" - laid back, like the US slang

Hope this helps, when all else fails:

Cai fora, piranha! (Kai foh-RA PEE-ranYA) = Beat it, bitch! - get ready to duck! hahahaha

Aw fuck, you guys are too much and have me nearly in tears here. How about "blow it out your ass" equivalent in Portugues.

BTW-Anyone have any idea why every other country in the world mis-spells the country of Brasil....note...no "Z" it is an "s".

Either BS-any idea? My teacher asked the other day and I didnt have a clue!

By Catocony on Tuesday, May 03, 2005 - 07:40 pm:  Edit

Well, most English speakers would then call it bra + sill (as in window sill), so I guess they changed it to make the phonetics accurate. We mispell it, with a "z", but the sound is the same as a Portuguese "s" in that placement in a word.

You could ask your teacher why Brasilians spell Philadelphia with an "f" and all of the other changes to our spellings. I always try and use the native spelling and pronunciation, although I eventually learned to leave Munich as Munich (and not the actual Munchen). However, I will never spell Koln as "Cologne", even though the phonetics are the same.

Sandman:

Cato is right, the "z" spelling is just phonetics.. like the French spelling is "Bresil", which is very close to the correct portuguese pronunciation if you say it with a French accent (fucking frogs). As for "Filadelfia," Brazilians very sensibly spell it that way so they can avoid all the mispellings of "Phantastic" "Phanatic" "Phabulous", etc that the phucking Philly media likes to plaster on every headline, advertisment, etc around here. BTW, there is a Filadelfia up in Tocantins, one day I'll have to visit.

Unfortunately, there is no direct equivalent of "Blow it out your ass" in portuguese, certainly a grave defeciency in the idiom. "Vai soprar cu afora" just doesn't have the same zing to it. Instead, brazilians have a whole lot of "Go .. yourself"-type sayings - "Vai lamber sabao" (go lick soap), "Vai pentear macaco" (Go comb a monkey), "Vai enxugar gelo" (Go dry off some ice), "Vai catar coco" (Go gather coconuts), etc.. certainly pictoresque, but not anywhere near appropriately obscene ("Vai chupar cabra" - Go suck a goat - comes close).

In general, Brazilian insults begin and end with "Vai tomar no cu", although any references to large objects are always helpful, i.e. "Vai meter (go stick) uma melancia (watermelon) no canto mais escuro (in the darkest corner) do seu cuzao (of your oversized ass)." And of course, never forget to pay appropriate homage to the guy's dear mother, usually referred to as "a puta que te pariu" (the whore who birthed you) or "biscate que da de graca" (two-bit whore who gives freebies). Throw in your dick for good measure (dick = "pau" - literally, the stick), add a few salty sayings such as "bicha" (trannie), "porra" (cum), "bucetudo" (big cunt), etc, and you have ample space to let your creativity flow: VAI TOMAR NO CU, SEU FILHO DA PUTA!! ENFIA UMA JACA NO CU DO TEU PAI CUZÃO! VAI CHUPAR CARALHO DE CABRITO, SEU BUCETUDO ARROMBADO FILHO DE UMA BISCATE QUE DÁ DE GRAÇA DEBAIXO DAS ARCAS DA LAPA!! VAI TOMAR NO SEU CU ARROMBADO DE CARALHO DE ELEFANTE, SUA BICHA ASSUMIDA!! PEGA NO MEU PAU E RODA, SEU PORRA DO PICA DO JEGUE!!... kids say the darndest things, don't they?

;-)
