I am going to Florianopolis for a conference, I have no idea how to find talent there. Has anyone visited this city? It is in the state of Santa Catarina. Otherwise, suggestions about how to find talent in a strange city in Brazil without speaking the language will be appreciated.
By Athos on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 - 10:42 pm: Edit |
You can check yellow pages and look for Termas.
Check local newpaper and look for escort ads.
By Youngtom on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 02:41 am: Edit |
Athos - sorry to burst your bubble but termas are a wonderful thing that only exist in Rio. Granted there are similar houses (on a smaller scale) in other cities in Brazil, but they are not listed in the yellow pages as in Rio. This is even true in Sao Paulo; although you can find numerous casas in Sao Paulo on the internet.
Looking in the newspaper is probably your best bet outside of tipping your taxi driver alot and asking him where to go.
By Youngtom on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 03:26 am: Edit |
Roger - how the heck have you ended up in Florianopolis without speaking a word of portuguese? I wish I could have the same problem.
By Athos on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 10:05 am: Edit |
Well then I am staying in Rio :-)
By Wilco on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 01:07 pm: Edit |
Roger, I ran a search on Florianopolis and came across quite a few sites with general information. I bet some had links to local newspapers and their classifieds. Give it a shot.
By Roger on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 - 09:42 pm: Edit |
Guys, thanks...
Youngtom, I am going to Florianopolis without speaking a word of Portuguese because I am an academic, I have friends at universities in Brazil, so I get invited....but first time to Florianopolis.
Wilco, which search engine or site did you use, I haven't found any useful links yet.
Anyone, more specific information will be useful. I am familiar with paying a taxi driver, it has worked in other non-touristy cities in Brazil, but it is pretty hit and miss without speaking the language...guess I'll have to study Portuguese, once I master Thai...
By Youngtom on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 01:07 am: Edit |
The pursuit of our hobby forces many of us to learn all sorts of things especially languages. But your comment relating to learning Thai & Portuguese kinda points out the choices that one has to make.
I think that even with no native language it is possible to go on a trip and have a great time. But essentially what one is surviving on at this point, is just your basic personality (if you are a polite/respectful type of guy & you treat women well then women see this & treat you like you treat them). But unless, you have some language skills (even if the woman has a real positive feel for you) the relationshp is not going far.
I've been working on the Spanish perspective ( and trying to learn a bit Portuguese to boot) but I think in some ways it seems to me if one learns an extensive amount of Thai ( more than where is the bathroom & how must does that cost) then your kinda committed to that country (in the case of Thailand) or hemisphere. Of course, if you can find women that speak English than this conversation is null & void.
By Roger on Thursday, January 31, 2002 - 08:47 pm: Edit |
I can get by in Brazil or in Thailand with sign language and cash, but some language skill is useful, as you note above, for getting beyond the basics. I have been studying Thai language for a year now, so I can get beyond finding the bathroom, but it is a long process. Of course frequent trips to Thailand to check out my progress seem fully justified...and, like Brazil, I go there for work too. Mention in passing to most girls working in bars in Thailand, at least in touristy places, do speak some English (not true in the boonies), while, in my experiences in Brazil, little English is spoken, even in terma in Rio....so I guess I need to study some Portuguese too.

Roger - it would be great to hear about your trip. There are so many beautful places in Brazil (I hear that the beaches are very nice there) & it is always good to hear more about them.

From what I understand Florianopolis is a small beach town, check the hooker bars for action:
Club Bokarra, Sauna 1007, Executive CLub 995 and La Maison.
You're probably looking at cheaper pricing than Rio.

I am going to spend about 4 to 5 days in florianopolis on my trip in late october early november and was just wondering if anyone knows about a two bedroom apartment or nice guest friendly hotel???? the same goes for Forteleza?? I plan on reporting about these places.

Khunjbl,
Can't help for Florianopolis but in Fortaleza I enjoyed the (Swiss) Pousada Jambo, rua Antonio Augusta 133, Iracema. T. 2193873. Clean and conveniently situated near the night action (and obviously guest friendly).

On the mainland, and the island. Connected by the biggest suspension bridge in South America.

Anyone has the current scoop on Florianapolis? beaches look nice. It's right between Curitiba and Porto Alegre which would make it a perfect layover.
By Latinleif on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 09:52 pm: Edit |
I was in Floripa in February and yes, there are some great beaches. In fact, there are something like 42 beaches all around this enormous island. I stayed in the north at Praia dos Ingleses in the PraiaTur Hotel, right across the street and down a bit from the public beach. The hotel was great. My own downstairs room with bedroom, sitting area, kitchen and porch in a four room bungalow with noone above or beside me. For $42 a night. The beach was okay. There are better, but the water was surprisingly warm and clear for being so far down the continent. A nicer beach is Jurere to the west, with a more relaxed, exclusive atmosphere. But for spectacular setting, you have to visit Praia Mole at least one day. It has a huge collection of boulders that jut into the sea. On one side is the public, predominately straight beach. On the other is the nude, predominately gay beach. Both are picture post card perfect.
As for the sex scene, things were dead in the north. Mainly couples and families, and lots of blondes, due to the German, Polish, Ukrainian ethnic mix. I've heard that Club Bokarra and some others mentioned on this board are where the action is, but I can't vouch for it. Wish I could.

Another famous beach is praia Garopaba. Hope to see it in person come November?
By Badseed on Monday, March 31, 2003 - 05:48 am: Edit |
Sf4dfish:
"Garopa" is a great beach, BUT, once again, BYOG (Bring your own Garota). There is absolutely no pro action there. I used to score surfer chicks like crazy in Garopa (some fantastic surfing beaches, not to mention all the fun of rolling around up on the dunes).... but I was 22yo, different times, different body. ;-)
Anyway, a quick overview of the town, it's an old whaling/fishing village turned into a beach resort. It's on the mainland, about 40 miles south of Floripa. Very popular with the Porto Alegre upper middle class, almost no foreign tourists (or g-damned Argies). Like most of the Brazilian seacoast, it's a series of sandy crescent-shaped beaches seperated by hilly headlands. The town itself has the usual tourist facilities.. pousadas, restaurants, etc. However, the town's main beach is not much, the "good" spots are a few miles up and down the coast (on dirt roads, last time I was there). You'll need either wheels of some sort (I spent one month getting around with just a bicycle), good hitchhiking skills, or be ready to walk a few hours. From the north, the beaches are Silveira - very wild and deserted, with the aforementioned dunes behind it, and small lakes between the dunes; Garopaba - the main beach, calm water, the usual beachfront bars, stores and houses, fishing boats anchored right offshore; Baleias - a bunch of tiny beaches interspersed with boulders on the right side of the bay, nice for a walk and good fishing; Vermelha - a good surfing beach right over the hill from the center of Garopaba; Ferrugem - THE surf beach, long and exposed with some beach bars and not much else, but plots of surfchicks ;-) ; Rosa - the best beach in Santa Catarina, IMHO, it's basically an unspoiled beach with a lake right behind it, but their are all kinds of little bars and hangouts in the jungle behind the beach... it's got a real "hippy" vibe, all the original landowners agreed not to cut down any trees when building their houses, so it's an almost perfect blend of man and nature.
That's it. Other than beaches and surf and impromptu parties on the weekends there really isn't much there.. but that's the beauty of it!
Enjoy....

Here's a list of Boates/Casas Noturnas I got from the yellow pages on my visit there last month. It's not complete since I only stayed there 3 days and had a busy schedule.
By the way, the suspension bridge is being refurbished for pedestrian traffic only. It was originally made as an railroad bridge in the mid 1920's.
Be sure to check out the garotas walking in the promenade near centro. The hotter ones shop early.
If you like to risk it a little, there are rooms above the promenade for $7 USD.
I didn't have time to check out praia mole, but I did check out praia Joaquina. You can get a hotel room overlooking the praia there for $40R (beautiful).

By Amous on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 03:40 pm: Edit |
sf4dfish:
I went to Bokarra on sunday nite...it had about 35 garotas 5 to 9's. Then on monday I went to Sauna 007...there was maybe 20 garotas 6-9's, about 10 customers. I can't exactly remember the rates, but it is a little cheaper than Rio.
If you plan to go up with a garota DO NOT let another garota nor a waiter set you up, they may scam you with a higher fee for the garota, and yep, I got taken for an extra $50R, but she was so juicy I didn't matter much.
At Executivo (next to Sauna) they only had 5 garotas and they seemed pushy. Also, Romano(sp?) (around the block and down the hill) was just about empty, but the doorman said the spill over of garotas from Bokarra sometimes filled the house (same owner).
The average garota in the promenade is much hotter than the average Rio garota, but (although boate garotas are slightly better than Rio's) the differences is not quite reflected in the clubs or boates. The differnce in the quality of garotas in these places in Brazil is not that much different, except for your higher priced places like Casa W in SP.

Sonnyp:
I guess it's called a promenade, anyway that's what it's called in Santa Monica. A city street turned solely into pedestrian shopping walkway (sometimes there is a cross promenade). There are some in BA, Curitiba, Floripa. The hotter garotas shop early.
Bokarra is not very large, it has a center stage, rooms in back, a bar, a terma kind of look to it, minus the garotas in bikinis. Try Sauna 007 also.
Once I build my house down there I'll be able to give a more detailed account.

How do you go about buying a house? Can you give legal details? I thought you needed a good lawyer to buy anything down there. Do you intend to live there full time? Are you applying for permanent resident?

Answering some questions from the Curitiba discussion:
Abandonado - Yeah, LBI can be good, depends a lot on the weather. However, generally when the water is warm, the swell is zilch. So you're a Jersey boy, huh? ;-) And YES, rent a car if you are going to stay for any longer than a week in Floripa (or maybe get a driver). I was renting in POA for about $150 a week, so it's not that expensive. Floripa public transport is a bitch and things tend to be far apart on the island. Riding back and forth from the beaches, you can usually hitchhike, but who needs the hassle? Besides with a car YOU can pick up the hitch-hikerettes and you can also get off the island to visit some of the other beaches up and down the coast - Garopaba, Itajai, Camboriu...
SonnyP: Sounds like a good plan. Just be aware that there is NO pro action outside of the Centro (downtown) and Joqua is about 45 minutes from teh Centro. So for mongerig, you're probably better off either arranging all-nighters (I can't see any pousada near Joqua objecting to your showing up with a girl) or going to a motel in the Centro. Again, I'd strongly suggest renting a car, don't depend on the buses at night and taxi-ing bak and forth will soon bankrupt you. If I get a free couple of minutes this weekend (and don't feel too lazy) I'll post some general tips/guide about the beaches on Floripa. For now, suffice to say that Joqua is centrally located and there are some good pousadas nearby at great prices ($20 a night or so).
Amous: Building a house in Floripa is one of my own dreams, it's truly beautiful there. Either along the Lagoa Conceicao hillsides (Costao) or in Barra da Lagoa... Do you know either of these?

Anything is possible, but Floripa is definitely safer than Rio, Sao Paulo, Vitoria. As I've written elsewhere, small towns are the way to go (and Floripa qualifies as a small town).

Athos:
I know zilch about buying and owning property there, but that has never stopped me. I usually dive headfirst and then struggle to resurface (not too much fun but gets me indocrinated quickly).
On my recent trips to Brazil I've taken a little time to look at locations in which to build, as of now I have three places in mind: Rio, Floripa, and Porto Alegre.
Badseed:
I was in Floripa for three days so I didn't get a good look at Santa Catarina, but what I saw I liked. I plan to go in a few months and look at the southern parts of the island, the tour guide said that's the place you'd want to build. BTW, praia Joaquina is close to the center of the island (just like Floripa), but on the ocean (not the mainland) side.
Since we have identical dreams concerning Floripa, maybe we can get together and discuss this over a brewskie. I'm always chasing my tail, so I'll try to communicate with you soon, (sometimes I only use club hombre an hour per week).

That's fne, drop me an email, I inboxed you the address, I'm pretty sure. There are ton's of places to build in Santa Catarina, but, as always, beachfront property can be expensive. The places I mentioned are in and around the central lake - Conceicao, which you pass on your way to joquina. You ucan't build at Joquina as it's all tall sand-dunues behind the beach. Where/what to build depends a LOT on personal preferences and what you plan to do there (besides abuse the matresses), how long you plan to be there per year. personally, I like peace and quiet and being FAR AWAY from all the crazies. Someplace to have a churrasco, and someplace to sail figures in very heavily too.... As for the garotas, if you build it,they will come (or cum) - at least that's my philosophy. ;-)

Well, it's late fall now. Floripa CAN have sunny fall/winter days (hell, I've gone swimming and surfing there in July!) but generally the weather is lousy - rainy, foggy, cloudy, 50's and 60's. The sunny days are in the 70's and 80's, though. Of course, there are extremes, it can reach into the 30's (very, very rare to go anywhere near freezing though), and you can always get a hot spell in the 90's. Now, the strange thing is tht the water is usually warmer in the winter than in the summer (hence, surfing in July), which keeps the temps from getting too extreme - and means great sailing for us old salts!
Hope that answers your questions. For living in Floripa, the winter is bearable... for vacationing, go somewhere else (Fortaleza!) and don't risk getting a solid week of rain.

Florianopolis, is a place where spanish only helps a little. However, this is one of the nice cities I have been to in Brazil. Stay at the Blue Tree Hotel, Guess friendly. The only place that had a lot of action was Bokarra Show (Big Mouth) and there were about 20 to 30 girls the night I arrived on November 5, 2003. Most of the girls came up from Porto Alegre. Lots of good looking women beteen 21 to 26 year old and most performed like pro's in the back rooms. The going price set by the house in RS$200 for 40 minutes. Most of the girls will come over to your Hotel when they are not working for the house. Florianopolis has 17 beachs a must to visit from December 15 to March 30. My favor city so far, only 28 to go.
