Ha, ha. I just came across this section. It was nice to read some of your comments YoungTom. I just started Pimsleur and really like the CD's. I went to the library and only got the 8 lesson set. but one of the dudes from the board is gonna sell me the complete set.

Can anyone that has completed the entire 90 lesson set tell me if that enables them to be conversational? Or tell me how your Portuguese has progressed after each set.

I laughed really hard around lesson #7 when the Portuguese speaking woman says that she does not want dollars....she wants reals. I thought to myself, that is probably the ONLY time you will hear a Brazilera saying those words.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I didn't do Pimsleur except for an intro course, but even that helped a lot with pronunciation. A lot of guys here have had good results with Pimsleur.

Whether or not you become conversational probably depends on you, not on the course. I've seen guys with years of study in Spanish who can't speak well at all, then I've seen guys who've lived in a Spain for a month get by pretty well. I'd just learn all you can as best you can and whatever you learn will help you.

One more tip...When you get there maybe go to Meia Pataca or an outdoor cafe and pull a garota or two to your table and buy them a drink or something to eat. Ask them how to say things and repeat with them, exactly as they say it. You might also take a microcassette recorder and record specific things to practice later. I did this and it helped me.

Level 1 is good enough to get by as a hombre. Level 1 is pronunciation and present tense. Level 2 adds past tense and vocabulary. Level 3 same idea, more tenses and vocabulary. But Level 1 is the most important.

Don't forget we are among the minority to use a dot for decimals, most countries use a comma.
So 591,00 would be 591.00 in US.
Opposite is true for thousand just switch comma and dot.
So 1,000.00 in US would be 1.000,00 in Brazil or Europe.

I bought a couple of my favorite movies on DVD at the blockbuster in Rio we get our money from. Of course, they don't work on my U.S. DVD player. I've heard they would work on a computer DVD player, which I'm going to try in a second. What I'd really like is to get a player that can play them back. Is my only choice to go back to Rio (OH NO - I JUST CAN'T DO THAT AGAIN!) to get one? Does anybody know if I can order a Brazilian player online? Is there a conversion thingy (software or hardware) I can use to make it work? Finally, if all else fails, where can I order DVD's with spoken English with Portuguese subtitles that will play on my (sony) player.

"Tesão" is one of those all-purpose words the garotas de programa like to use a lot (like Asian bargirls with "You so hohny, numba 1"). It does mean something liek horny/horniness/"sexual tension", when they use it refering to you they're saying you're "hot", when they say it refering to themselves - "tou com tesao", they mean they're horny. Either way, take it with a grain of salt... ;-)

The female verion (if you want to say this to a girl) is "tesuda" - again hot/horny, pronounced "te-zoo-DA"

I studied Spanish in college but portuguese is so much harder to learn because they slur the words so fast. I thought knowing a little spanish would help learning Portuguese but it just make it more confusing. I wonder if i slur the words just like the native but maybe no quiet pronounce it correctly if they will still understand what I say.

Unfortunately no, the pronunciations are way to different. Reading and writing, you could probably get by with Spanish. Speaking, not really and as far as listening, no chance.

I'm going to get a 9-page PDF to Hombre to post that has a nice pronunciation guide and some shortcuts to build vocabulary. What is also needed is a Spanish to Portuguese conversion chart as well, for those of us who speak Spanish or have at least had a few years of it in school.

CAT, I beg to differ with you! I speak fluent Spanish and thru my numerous trips to Brasil, consistently since '94, I speak, read and understand Portuguese pretty good. And my first time there in '86, I had a fabulous time for a first-timer:-)

Steelers, many Argentine tourists visit Brasil speaking only Spanish. For better comprehension between you and a Brazilian, speak a little slower and nunciate all your words completely. And like wise, tell a Brazilian to "fala de vaga" talk slowly, and you should do alright? sf4dfish

But seriously, I just had a kind of wake-up call. I've been listening to/repeating after Pimsleur every day while driving. Every day. I'm at II Lesson 24. Thought I was learning a lot. A namorada called today (Tereza, for those that read my report--and no, she didn't ask for money). But I still couldn't understand very much unless she said a couple of words at a time, then paused to give me a moment to recognize the words. Very frustrating, I may have to go speak to her in person....

Of course, my comprehension is better than it was (at least I can eventually understand some of what she says), and I can express myself to some extent. This is like gym--painful and slow, but there's definite progress. Forever....

My girl says she was "prnouched" once and it hurt. It was probably Don Gringo or Layne that did it because she's tiny.

On Friday night, after a stag party, a group of us headed to the IronBound section near Newark, NJ in search of Brasillian strip clubs. There's a fair-sized Portuguese population there. We got to one place, and my buddy asks me how to say "I want to fuck you right now" in Portuguese.

Is Pemsleur Instant Conversation the same as Pimsluer I? It's a 10disk set at $40. There's 18 lessons on these disk and I got through about 12 of them before my first trip. I learned very little but it was better than nothing. I want to study all three sets before I return in Nov. I guess what I'm asking is should I just finish this one then start on II and III?

And also do you guys think it's worth the time. Being able to converse with the girls is definantly a plus but at what cost?

And finally my last question. How fluent would I be If I mastered all 3 series? And have any of you guys mastered all 3 without outside lessons?

Pimsleur I is 30 lessons on 15 disks, so PIC might not prepare you for II and III.

I made several trips to Rio, got along OK, but for the last trip I studied (listened to/repeated each sentence or phrase) all of Pimsleur I, repeating each disc 2 or 3 times, a few 4 times, until I pretty much mastered it.

I felt that my efforts paid off in spades, because I was able to communicate somewhat at last (I carried a dictionary, too). Still couldn't understand much, unless spoken slowly using the words I knew, but it gave me a real taste of Rio. Actually, I was frustrated that I couldn't communicate better, much more so than when I could only speak a few words of Portuguese.

The cost? Time or money? My cousin gave me the courses, so the $ were minimal. Time was easy for me, I put the discs in my car CD and practiced every time I drove anywhere, often over an hour a day. When I came back in Jan., I reviewed the first 30, and continued. I'm on III lesson 3 now, same serious commitment to master each disc. It's painful. But I learn it. And I'm sure it'll pay off. Look for a trip report in May.

How fluent? Not very, minimal communication ability, will get you around. I plan to take outside lessons after I finish III, my goal is to be able to speak and understand comfortably (this is a long-term project, and I'm an older guy, but the payoff is constant--and hey, I've got to go to Brazil frequently to practice).

Thanks for the info Hunterman. I guess it's time to get on Ebay to find my first set. I've read that Pimsleur I is the most important because it teaches you pronunciation. I doubt I'll make it through all 3 before my return but I will definantly try to master I. I'm sure now that my hard work will pay off. Thanks again.

I have an awesome list of sexual phrases in english, that i'd like translated in Portuguese. This includes pickup lines, ice-breakers, sweet talking, the essentials of mongering... I don't think Hombre will let me post it because I think he deleted the thread where I posted it asking for translation. If someone can assist in this translation endeavor that'd be GREAT. The list also includes sexual positions, asking if you can do certain things with them, telling them you're going to do certain things, etc.

You realize that most sexual phrases are untranslatable between languages? For instance, pussy - "gatinha" - means cute girl (chick) in brazilian portuguese, while the brazilian for pussy - "perereca" - means frog as in croak-croak. You just can't translate this stuff...

Over the past 6 months, I have accumulated 47 pages in three PDF files of useful Portuguese phrases that range from simple introductions and pleasantries to "I want to cum in your mouth" and "I like this position" types. Every one has a phonetic guide for pronunciation, spelling and many have alternative phrases that are more coloquial to Rio. I had a local GDP help me with many local slangs that only a carioca would recognize.
