Lots of great food in Rio.

I found the beef to be awesome, impossible to get anything like this in SD.
I loved the juices, pussy style and sucos style.
Coffee was also excellent.

On a sidenote, they include the tip in the bill so no need to add any tipping.

YT: Mio in Ipanema. It is an Italian restaurant that I like.
By Youngtom on Tuesday, April 09, 2002 - 10:00 pm: Edit |
I have to admit that I tend to eat over & over again in the same few restaurants in Rio. With so many board regulars visiting and eating in Rio these days, we should be able to come up with a large list of places that we've eaten at. Thanks CityDude, StayAwayJoe and Athos on the recommendations on restaurants.

I recently realized and I'm not sure if others know this or not. Some rest. advertise a "rodizio". It basically means or I think it means "all you can eat" and is usually $R20 or less.
There is an excellent suchi rest. (I'm not a fan of sushi but a frined is) in Ipanema that offers this and yes, you can eat as much sushi\sashimi as you'd like,.

I know some places they add the tip to the bill so there is no need to tip but out of habit I still always leave a couple of reals even if the service is medicore. Is this wrong?
By Athos on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 10:13 am: Edit |
Cueball
Tipping is not expected as they add 10% to your total already but leaving extra couple won't hurt.

Hey guys,
Does anyone know the name of the restaurant on the corner of Alantica and siqueira campos?
Outdoor dining.
Prices and food was good.
I had the crab soup for $R7.

By SF_Hombre on Saturday, November 08, 2003 - 10:27 am: Edit |
The name is "Rondinella". $7 seems really cheap; are you sure about the price?
Their canja (chicken soup with rice & veggies)for 8 or 10 $R is also good however, just now having returned from lunch at that restaurant, I can report that the picanha (thinly sliced grilled steak) with rice etc. in a word, sucked.
It was lukewarm at best, heavily salted and eminently forgettable...especially at $27R
For meat, a far better bet is the Sigueira Grill, about 75' away, up Sigueira Campos from the beach. Better yet, it's on the way to L'uomo
By Laguy on Saturday, November 08, 2003 - 02:07 pm: Edit |
SF Hombre: Gotta agree with you. The Siqueira Grill, assuming we are talking about the restaurant on the left hand side of the street as you begin to head towards Luomo, is one of my mainstays when I am in Rio.
By Michaez28 on Saturday, November 08, 2003 - 02:58 pm: Edit |
No, I believe it is on the right if you are heading away from the beach towards L'uomo.
By Laguy on Sunday, November 09, 2003 - 01:43 am: Edit |
I checked my earlier trip report and the place I like is a Churrascaria at Rua Siqueira Campos, 23 called something like Carretao. I believe I also have eaten at the Siqueira Grill, if it is one of the places across the street frmo Carretao.
By Ardgneas on Sunday, November 09, 2003 - 09:00 am: Edit |
Rondinella is nearly always packed at the moment as they have a special on chopp. Chopps are R1 each although they're only garotos (220ml). Still cheap for Ave. Atlantica. I ate there last year (filet parmigiana) and was underwhelmed so haven't returned even with cheap beers and despite it being 2 blocks from where I was staying.
The restaurant next door has all you can eat (rodízio) pizza for R9.80. Cheap but I can't vouch for the quality.
I agree Carretão is a good churrascaria, preferable to Porcão IMHO and only R17. Siqueira Grill is about 20 yrds up on the right as you head from the beach next door to Manuel & Joaquim (sp?).

After a hard night of research at the L'Uomo Institute in Rio, I woulld like to take some of my research assistants for something to eat. Unfortunately, I have been unable, so far, to find any decent restaurants (not sucos joints) where we can sit and have a leisurely meal. I know tht the Terraco is open til 3 but would prefer not to subject my colleagues to that. Any information would help in my quest for knowledge.

I like Cantina Donana. It's a good italian place about 4 blocks from luomo.
By Bwana_dik on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 11:10 am: Edit |
But I think Cantina Donana closes at 2, doesn't it?
By SF_Hombre on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 01:29 pm: Edit |
And the night that BT and I were there the whole Cantina Donana reeked of mildew throughout the meal. I would only give it a 5 on the food too, based on that one experience.

I should have noted in my earlier post that I seek a restaurant that is open AFTER the Institue closes at 2AM. I am not looking for a Sucos place or a counter. Again, any assistance would be appreciated.
Back to the research.

As Robert Duvall said in Apocalypse Now, "I love the smell of 18 year old Brazilian pussy in the morning"...or was that Napalm? Try dining at the Y, which is a particular specialty of the Casa de Lotech.
In all honesty buddy, I have been searching local publications and have not been able to find anyplace decent that is open that late at night. I am sure they exist....somewhere...as this is a late night town but I'll be damned if they are widely publicized, advertised or frequented by the mongering crowd.
You may have posed the ultimate challenge question of the year on CH.
By Catocony on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 06:09 pm: Edit |
What time does La Ciccolene close? I thought it was open until 4:00 A.M. or so.
Lotech, if you have an apartment keep some chow there and chef up something for her. I cooked my favorita dinner the first night I was in town last month and she was shocked - in her words, she had "never seen a white man cook dinner". She was fascinated by the whole experience and mentioned to about everyone we ran into the next day.
Better yet, maybe she'll cook something up for you instead!
Of course, if you're not into cooking or are in a regular hotel room without a kitchen, put something together picnic-style and stash it in the fridge. I did the after-hours rooftop picnic at both the Marriott and the Atlantico Copa - chicken, some fruit, some drinks - and again, the girls loved it.

There is a place open all night a couple of blocks down from the Debret towards Arporador. At least it used to be. I ate there at 4 am one night a year ago and it was packed at that time. It is either Sindicato de Chopp or one of the places located very nearby. It serves a full menu.
My problem is I go to bed early...am not a night owl very often. Someone can probably verify if this restaurant is open pretty easily.
By Ixtoc on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 12:45 pm: Edit |
There's a decent restaurant just down from L'Oumo. Sorry I don't recall the name but I'll describe where it is. I've eaten there several times after the L'oumo Institute has closed.
Walk down Siquieria Campos towards the beach. You'll pass Hotel Atlantico Copacabana on the left. About two blocks down on the right hand side you'll see a restaurant that has covered sidewalk seating as well as in-door.
By Hunterman on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 04:39 pm: Edit |
There's a Sucos-type place at Ave. Copacabana and Francisca Sa (I think) that's open quite late, 4 or 5 AM. It's safe there, too, but I only walked up the street from the beach.
And I went to a place near Barbarella's and the streetwalkers a couple years ago that's a favorite with the locals, don't remember the name, long-time in business.
By Beachbum2 on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 05:13 pm: Edit |
Sindicato de Chopp is one block past the Luxor Regente. I think they are usually open until the last people leave. At some point though they may stop serving food and just have drinks. Its pretty good

Does anyone know if the restaurant Arlecchino
(located at Rua Prudente de Morais 1387, Ipanema)
still exists?
By Gr8ter on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 - 01:14 pm: Edit |
Ok, so over the past few days I have been frequenting some new (to me) restaurants. Most are in barra cause my "girlfriend" lives there. A few are really worth mentioning.
1) Galleria Gourmet, located in downtown shopping. Great restaurant, 26 reais or so for all you can eat. They have stations for pizza, pasta, salad and meat where they will cook whatever you want with whatever ingredients you like. Awesome stuff, highly recommended. In addition to the stations, they have about 50 other premade casseroles and other dishes with fish, meat, chicken, and vegetarian. Oh yeah, they also have sushi. This is probably one of my favorite places now.
2) Montana Grill, two locations, one in barra de tijuica and i think the other is in centro. Currently my favorite rodizio. Better meat than porcao in my opinion, plus they have a make your own pasta station, and it is half the price (porcao rios and ipanema are both around 52r per person now).
While I am at it, I love the all you can eat meat rodizios (I would say chuccuscaria or whatever but i know i am going to get the spelling wrong). I have been to most of them and here are my rankings (of the ones I can remember off the top of my head)
1) Montana Grill
2) Pampa Grill
3) Porcao
4) Marius Fruto do Mar (seafood)
5) Marius Carne
6) Barra Brasas
7) Oasis
8) Carretao
A couple notes, marius carne i think is a ripoff, they just charge so much money and it is not that much better than the others. Marius seafood is awesome, but very expensive (if i remember correctly over 100r per person). The ambiance is best at Porcao and the two Marius but all are nice, although Barra is a little more less formal. Another problem, most of the places on the list are in barra, not exactly convenient so if you dont want to leave copa/ipanema and leblon, you are stuck with Carretao, Porcao, and Marius. In my opinion the best of the three is Porcao. If anyone has been to any good rodizios that I have missed or they recommend, please post them here.

Two decent churrascarias whose names I don't remember: one is in Ipanema next to Shenanigans, about R$20, the other is on the away-from-the-beach side of Avenue Copacabana, the number 973 stands out in my mind, also about R$20.
By Sweetmesquite on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 07:49 am: Edit |
carretao ipanema is next to shennagins [great sports bar]. try oceana grill over marius seafood. cheaper, nicer atmosphere. near copa palace on side street.
By Gr8ter on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 08:34 am: Edit |
carretao is good for the price considering its location, but montana grill, barra grill and montana grill are about the same price and have a lot better food. the problem is they are in barra.
i will go try oceana grill this week, thanks.
By Catocony on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 04:51 pm: Edit |
Carretao is a chain - one right across from Porcao-Ipanema and one across the street from Siqueiro Grill in Copa - and I hear it's pretty good, and about half the price of Porcao.
By Sf4dfish on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 05:18 pm: Edit |
IMO, the best, most "economical" rodizio in Rio is Monchique in Copa.
They charge something like 11.90R Mon-Fri, and 13.90R weekends and holiday's. And after you pay they give you rub-out discount coupons for you to come back ASAP, with a discount!
By Ardgneas on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 05:21 pm: Edit |
Carretão Copa is as you say on Siqueira Campos. Carretão Lido is on Ronaldo de Carvalho about 10 yards from Balcony. I prefer the meat in both to Porcão in Copa and they're normally cheaper.
By Mitchc on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 - 07:26 pm: Edit |
Porcao in copa was closed long ago.
By Snooky on Thursday, June 23, 2005 - 10:46 am: Edit |
I've tried most of the churrascarias around Copacabana, Ipanema, Flamengo (haven't tried Barra) and IMO Carretão Copa is as good as any of the higher priced ones. The higher priced ones have a littler better ambiance and will offer a some extras like lamb chops.
By Ardgneas on Thursday, June 23, 2005 - 03:59 pm: Edit |
True Mitch but I haven't been to Porcão in Ipanema/Barra etc. which is kinda stupid given I've been to the one in Lisbon. Porcão Rios in Flamengo is IME a level above Carretão although the price reflects it.
I don't like MonChiChi (sp?) either, so I agree with Snooky that Carretão is hard to beat for value.

Any suggestions for best bahian food in Rio? I am craving moqueca. I have tried Yemanja. I thought it was good. Curious to hear if there is better. IMHO - NYC struggles in its attempt to offer up good Brasilian food. - LB

LuckyBiegs:
And as for your comment that NY struggles to serve decent Brasilian food, yes, quite true. But try crossing the Hudson (and the swamps, say hi to Jimmy Hoffa!) to Newark. Walk down Ferry Street from Penn Station, plenty of good Brazilian places, with food every bit as good as "home".
Some suggestions: Brasilia Grill on Madison for Churrasco and general "atmosphere" in the bar, including Sunday-night impromptu Samba sessions; any "Casa de Pao de Queijo" - just a typical lanchonete a chain of 4 down Ferry St, but good; Churrascaria Boi Na Brasa in the Adams Mall (70 Adams St?), food-wise probably a bit better than Brasilia Grill, worth a try (but it's run by a Gremista, B.G. belongs to a Colorado, so I go to B.G. ); Tapajos, on Wilson just after it splits off from Ferry (at the church), a typical "pe rapado" restuarant, good PF's, the owner is a rabid Vasciano, even though he is from Santarem; my new favorite - Cafe Altas Horas, on Ferry after the bend at the church, a more upscale lanchonete than Casa Pao de Quiejo, with better food, IMHO, and nice eye-candy behind the counter
; Also try Piquinique, very close to Altas Horas, they are actually Portuguese, all the staff is Mexican, but they have the BEST galeto (Grilled Chicken) in Newark. Also try any of the Portuguese padarias (confectionary/bakeries) on Ferry, they are all good, especially the biggest one (Rivoli? You can't miss it, it's huge). Lastly, walk into any of the Seabra markets in Newark (the biggest one is at teh corner of Laffayette and Admas) for Brazilian groceries.
Hope this helps!

my wife has seen all the ads on globo and wanted to go to newark the last time we were east...i kept telling her that it was not what she thought.....
after our tour of ferry street and having lunch at brasilia grill...all i heard is: "they are all illegal...how did they get into your country?"
i still joke with my wife and ask her if she wants to go back to newark...and the reply is NO.
at one time westfield nj had a brasilia grill on broad street....it was ok, but nothing like the real thing in brasil.
in birmingham mi we have a brasilian restaurant...forgetaboutit....the worst i have ever had and the cuts were to thick.
nyc, i like plataforma, i think it is on 58th street and 7th??, just before central park.
how are the bars on route 22, nj that advertise brasilian girls???

Thanks gents for the suggestions. I have been dying to get a crew over the river to IronBound section. I am under the impression the strip clubs there are filled with Brasilian girls as money hungry as their cousins in the homeland. - LB

Hey Hemp, is the wedding still on for this weekend? Or did you give up on your San Paulo sweetie because everyone else is doing her before you can? When I come back in Oct. I am going to stop in San Paulo and see her, then I am going to go after that cute brunette you introduced to me from Niterois, since I am sure she is on the program by now!!! 2 months is still along ways away, but will see you in October!

hemp,
i actually saw some great shots of your sao paulo sweetie last night. a guy had sessioned with her yesterday and got some good ones. i know he is a member of this board so lets see if he does us the pleasure of posting them.
plataforma has two locations in nyc, one in tribeca and one in midtown around where was mentioned, one block off times square, about 60 dollars per person if i remember correctly, very nice, not as good as in brasil though and always packed, make reservations.
Hemp,
I think it would be better if you could come up with the 38k reais your other noiva in rio needs, lol. that was so funny, i hope i get to see her before i am out of here, we will all be back in rio tomorrow, we stayed an extra day in sp and are all going back to bahamas now about 7 board members at least will be there, talk about raising hell!!!
