This one is around located between Help and the Orthon Palace. It probably is the most popular cafe.

I was in Meia Pataca yesterday day and this Carnaval thing is getting out of control. It was full of tourists (non-monger flavor); they need to make sure the girls all have health cards or something.

Looks like Carnaval is over (at least for the masses of tourists). You can finally get a seat in Meia Pataca. Up until yesterday, Meia Pataca was packed from noon until mid-night.

I always eat the chicken soup with 4 spoons of the picante oil. I think that it wards off evil spirits.

This is a great cafe for meeting up with your amigos in the afternoon to exchange stories of the last day. As Wilco pointed out elsewhere, try not to get too loud telling your stories as there are tourists that sometimes frequent this cafe that are actually there on vacation. That said odds are about 99% that any garota in this cafe is on the programma.

I've never been overly impressed with Meia Patacas' cuisine, but damned if their chicken soup ain't better than Moms. The perfect light meal before serious terma going.

Miea Pataca is like amature hour.The place is always too full of gringos and newbies to do any serious business. It's a convenient place to meet friends for a drink or relax after a trip to the beach, but it's not much of a pick up spot either in terms of selection or value. As far as the food goes, the fare is far superior just down the street a bit further south at the Alcazar.The Alcazar is on the corner opposite the Debret and it is much quieter and more comfortable.Youngtom,I agree the chicken soup is always a good choice,but you should try the seafood soup at the Alcazar. BTW the seafood soup is also quite acceptable at the Teracio Atlantico (the cafe outside of Help).

Thanks for the advice on Alcazar. I've also heard several other very positive comments regarding the food there. I need to use that as a meeting place rather than Meia Pataca especially now that I'm staying at the Debret more & more (I like the view). I'll have to see if I can get them to make the seafood soup without any shrimp (I'm allergic to shrimp); it sounds delicious.

I really like Alcazar - probably the best standard fare I've found on Atlantica.

As to picking up garotas at Meia Pataca, I have had some lucky moments there, though it does seem to lean 'twards hard-core.

I dunno, I must have walked by that place dozens of times in my 10 days in Rio, and I didn't see anything even remotely do-able.

admittedly, mp does not have many hotties hangin around, but was one of my favorite places to hang out and soak up the atmosphere of rio. great place to meet other guys from all over the world, as well as a good place for newbies to either hook up with vets or just learn the ropes of the city from conversation. the food gets a bad rap, but i had sliced filet with an asparagus salad that was great...and i am a food snob raised in san francisco....ymmv i guess.

if you are looking for blondes, mp is not the spot. but if darker girls appeal to you, there are some gems from time to time, and the prices are lower.....what is it about choppe that makes it the best beer ive ever had? someone told me it has no hops or barley, or something like that. anyone know?

Great read Wilco; very well written report. It turns out I can read your report using IE (it does not seem to work with Netscape 6.2 though - go figure). Reading your report this time around made alot more sense to me as the previous times were prior to me ever visiting Rio. I recognized Bruna; she was dancing in Termas 65 when Wilco & I were there in Feb. I'm going to have to take a girl to the Vanity on my next trip; it sounds like a fun place to take a girl.

Your mention of the Scalla ball reminded me of something I saw on television in Rio. There was an interview with a naked TV (very attractive mind you) at the Scalla ball on national television. The interviewer was examining the TVs reconstructed breasts very carefully for about 10 minutes and asking all sorts of intimate details. I think it will be awhile (like never) before we see the same sorts of interviews in the US on the national news. If I ever go to the Scalla ball, I think that I am going to very careful NOT to drink anything there as it would be very easy to leave with a date & find out that you got something that you didn't really bargain for later. Lots of attractive "people" there though.

I'd have to agree with the statement that most of the girls that hang out at Meia Pataca's are about a 5 but at times one can find gems in there. Unfortunately for me; the times that I've seen gems in there, they've already hooked up with guys. I do enjoy sitting in Meia Pataca exchanging stories with friends though.

Did you stay at the Love Hotel for your Boulder Carnaval trip? 100R isn't a bad price. I'd say it appears to beat the apartamento approach. I assume it had plenty of towels, mirrors, porno flicks, cable tv -- and breakfast for two and no walk of shame. Even $200R during Revellion and Carnaval isn't too bad relative to other places. Did you hear your neighbors all night? Was there any downside to staying at this place? What are the prices now? Muito obrigado.

Not sure what prices at the Vanity are now. The price was actually R$150 which was $100US at the time with the exchange rate. After carnaval the price went R$75. If it had a mini bar (a must have) it would be the perfect hotel. Yeah, you sure could hear some moans, but it was'nt too bad. Actually kind of comical. Yup, plenty of mirrors and towels and breakfast for two served in your room. The porno channel was mostly Brazilian, which of course was cool.

I agree that the pizza doesn't really compare to pizza in the states. However, I learned years ago never to compare "american food in foreign countries" with their counter parts here in the states.

I liked the shrimp pizza because the crust was thin, it was loaded with cheese, there was no red gravy, and the shrimp were cooked "scampi style".

Normalhombre is right on the money on this situation. Never compare food in US to another country; if you do it only points out how naive you are. It literally is wrong to expect that things in another country to be the same as america. Pizza in Brazil or Europe is a different style than you are expecting ( and they aren't going to change that for you)

As I was growing up, I lived in a couple of different countries. There were several situations where I would taste something, think this is wonderful, what is it, and the reply would be "oh, that is monkey balls". So I've learn never ask "what is this?"

It terms of pizza the style that we are used to in the USA is very different than Brazil or even Italy. When we visit other countries, we need to try to acclimate ourselves to their cultures. And if you can't do that then you need to eat lousy American food at McDonalds. You can find McDonalds the world over - And I'm sorry about that.

Really gotta disagree with you here. Whether it's something irrelevant as pizza or sex or whatever, comparing cultures is what we unwittingly do. Some cultures got it right and some don't. There is A STANDARD GOOD QUALITY AND BAD QUALITY. For instance, we go to Brazil because the sex and women are far superior than what is offered here in the states. Agreed? They got it right and we don't. Vice-versa on the pizza. Nothing naive about it. There are innumerable other examples, but you get my drift.

It wasn't common, but on several occasions I saw some hot girls at Meia Pataca during my trip in June. I didn't get any names, but there were solid 8's with some 9 bodies. Still selection seemed slim until after 4pm or so and very unreliable.

I also ordered the "Meia Pataca" pizza which included shrimp and some other stuff on top of the crust. It was decent while I was eating it, but left a funny aftertaste in my mouth afterwards.

I didn't notice prices mentioned above. The price for food at Meia Pataca is relatively high for food in Brazil.

mp is a nice place to eat and meet..

the ladies vary from 6 to 10 and ...the 6's are fine also..even if they want a lot..

personally, i think MP is severely overrated, and I've never seen anything over an 8 around there...most of the chicks are overly hardcore, and aggressive...not my cup of tea, but to each their own...

The one good thing about M.P. is the "newcommers". MP is first grade for 90% of all the gorotas who begin a programma (help girls). This is where they get their introduction into the business, perfect place to catch a girl on her first day of work.

I have a good friend who now lives in Rio (retired) and he goes to MP every day in order to catch the newbies just starting out, he gets them for 100R for 3 hours and helps break them in. Not every girl who decides to become a prostitute stays in it for the long haul, some only last a month, week, or a day. Plus MP is the perfect place to find girls who have just come back from the states or europe, their fist stop when back in brasil is usually MP.

Anymore, MP has turned into the primo gathering spot for our brothers of color. 24/7 this place is full of some very cool dudes. There's hardly any room for the ladies there anymore. Shame too, cuz I've pulled some decent talent out of there a year or two ago.

Oh, and they make a stellar cheeseburger with egg there. Highly recommended.

I pulled a couple of nice looking garotas from there. I would meet one or two ladies there, have a nice lunch with them, then head back to my apartment with them. I've seen this place glide from shitty to shittier over the past 3 years. The service sucks although I tip well and i am regular since i go down to Rio 4 times a year and spend an average of 10 days/trip, the food prices (compared to local prices) are extremely high and the selection of women is becoming increasingly dismal and overpriced.

What really needs to happen for any improvement to occur is for us to start spending some time at Havana next door and some of the other places that litter Copa.

Having said that I have had some great times there and met some of my closest friends and obtained some grade A intelligence almost on par with Garota Net!

Lots of RIO girls at help do not like black americans. With the strength of Euro, there is a italian invasion at Help. Will the dollar get stronger, no it will not.
