Thanks for the photos. As one can see the Jardin Botanico is a great place to take a stroll. Right around the corner from one of my favorite places - Termas Solarium.

I read somewhere (probably a travel guide) that the Jardim Botanico and environs was a likely place to get mugged. Anyone witness such?

I'm not sure what your point is. Jardim Botanico does not have alot of people hanging out so it probably is an ideal place to get mugged. But you could say that about any secluded place in Rio (and there aren't many secluded places).
I actually had a travel guide that was written several years ago that advised not even taking cabs because they were too dangerous (I threw that one away awhile ago since it was so useful).
There is no rational reason not to go the jardim botanico.

This happened to a colleague of mine. He was on a long-term consulting gig in GIG. Once while stuck in traffic in a cab heading to the airport, His driver alerted that a bunch of vagabonds were moving their way from the nearby favela armed with crowbars. While these thugs were still faraay messing with cars/cabs up in front; he took his laptop, stuffed it in the floor threw crumbled newspaper, crawled on to the front seat, took his wallet and threw it on the dashboard.
They took his wallet, 100 rias, two CCs and did not bother and moved to the car in the back.....
