very cheap and high quality clinic:
Las Vegas
Oral Laser
Fase 1 Cons. 119
266 70 58
$ 400 000 for about 2-3 treatments, but you have to stay longer, not only for one weekend. One treatment will cost about 250 000.

A couple of the guys here got it for USD$90 as they went together and got a special. Looked pretty good. Modern equipment and all, but said the dentist chair was one of the most uncomfortable ever experienced

I did the deal through the Mansion, fairly easy and the dentist was good.
I commented on another part of this board that my dentist in the US was impressed with the quality of work. He couldn't even buy the supplies for what I was charged. I think every dentist chair is uncomfortable so I won't comment on that but the office was immaculate and very modern.
One downside though is the dentist really wanted to reset some of my fillings, which my dentist in the US said wasn't necessary.
That being said, even if the dentist did all new filings, it may set me back another $50. I actually could have done it.

I have been to the dentist there twice and it's amazing. Having british teeth i needed loads done! I had lazer whitening which was great and cheap. 5 new fillings too, it was much better than the British dentists and they charge way too much. The work done there is so good i no longer go to my dentist here, but wait to go back to Mde.

I know I should probably post this question under the Brazil section, but do you guys happen to have any info about similar dental services available in Rio de Janeiro?

For laser whitening and other dental work, I highly recommend these guys:
Juan Carlos Mejia Escalante - Dentist
Juan Carlos Mejia [juancmejia2002@hotmail.com]
448 4847
Speaks fluent english. Has an immaculate office with state of the art equipment.
Very conscientous, especially with travelling patients who cannot easily return for followup
His prices were 28% of the quotes I got from an American dentist. AND that included a 20% rush fee to do a root canal and crown in only 3.5 days. (total w/rush fee = $860 USD)
Very honest - he scaled back work that wasn't needed, and found extra work that I didn't know I needed. When I accidently overpaid him, he gave me back the difference. Great guy.
Dr. Juan David Restrepo - Oral Surgeon
Fonsirpo@yahoo.com
276 5686
Got two root canals from this guy for $125 & $200
Speaks English
Excellent work
BONUS: He has a DVD player with virtual goggles so you can watch movies while he's drillin' ya. Very pleasant experience to watch the Playboy 2006 calendar video during a root canal.

Recently when down in Rio, I got a tooth ache and waited until I got back to the states to get it fixed. Sure enough, the tooth was absessed, which means either pulling it, or a root canal. Of course, after the root canal they recommended a crown.
They told me the fee for everything was $2250. After I got off the floor, I remembered meeting someone from the board in Don's shop who told me he gets all of his dental work done in Rio. Now I know why! Perhaps Hombre, or us members, should think about a section on Medical and Dental care overseas. Like Dongringo's above post, members could list the names of known Doctors and Dentists.

I have used these people for 5 years now: http://www.sonria.com.co/. They have offices all over Colombia. I have used clinics in Cartagena and Medellin. So far they have done 2 crowns and 2 root canals plus normal stuff.
I just had an exam and cleaning for less than US10 plus a full-mouth Xray for slightly more than US$10. And the dentist himself did the cleaning.
My novia just got a quote from a different dentist for 2 crowns at US100 each.

Tomtom33,
Perhaps you don't fully understand my post; I need a fucking Dentist in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, not Colombia!! Oh well, thanks for supporting Dongringo's recommendation.
Are you kidding, two crowns for $100 each? If I fly down there will I be able to communicate with them? As you know, I speak only English and Portuguese. I don't want to say something to the dentist in Portuguese and wind up losing all my teeth. Things like that happen to me all the time.

Jag,
For people with dental insurance it's cheaper in the US. For those without dental insurance (or medical insurance), my advice is to spend some of the bank on small things like that before budgeting for mongering.
That said, your best bet may to get a private health plan in Brasil. Very, very cheap compared to here, even with the shitty exchange rates.

Cat,
Are you getting a kickback from some insurance company, or what? I don't want insurance here or in Brazil. I just want the name of a decent cheap dentist in Rio. Is that such a hard question to answer.
Don't even think of suggesting that dentist located across the street from the favela bar. I have some serious issues with him, and I bet he would enjoy getting me in his chair.

With all the chocolate you're buying the faveladas, I'm sure they're in there all the time with their teeth rotting out. You are the sole economic engine for that block. The beers you buy let the favela bar owner buy food, the chocolates you buy let the chocolate guy buy food, the chocolate you give away rots the teeth of the faveladas, who then go to the dentist. The great circle of life, all because of you ![]()

$100 for a crown? Suddenly I'm feeling like a rube. Does the guy speak english? Does he wash his instruments between patients? and does that include both the dentists cost for preparing the tooth AND the lab costs for making the crown? And is the crown made of porcelain? or is it plastic or playdough![]()
