Jose Antonio
Bernardo Monteagudo #200
San Isidro 264-0188
Also locations in San Borja and Asia Panamericana Sur
Daily 12:30-4:30 and 7:30-midnight
I went on a Sunday evening; there were only four tables occupied.
This is 'traditional' Peruvian (Criollo) food, in a very classic setting. I went with a date, and we shared a order of Scallops Parmigiana, I had a seafood soup and and order of arroz con pato (duck with rice), and my date had fried calamari. Everything was both delicious and plentiful. Until that night, I had never really seen the allure of scallops with cheese melted on them. The restaurant had extensive choices in both the land and the sea areas of the menu.
Everything was also freshly-made and the service was impeccable.
The total tab, including a pisco sour, two sodas for me and a dessert for my date, came to about US$50. This included the obligatory charge for bread on the table (a practice that I have a problem with). I felt that this was an excellent value and I recommend this restautrant.
They were more than happy to call us a cab when we were finished with our meal.

RT here. Jose Antonio was the place to be last night, apparently. At one table, there was the Costa Rican delegation. At another, the President of Honduras. Then, at a third table, seven really ugly guys and a sweet, pretty girl.
Good thing that the girl showed up -- we were getting some of the security guys worried.
Oh yeah, the food was outstanding and the male company pretty average. The check for the eight of us came to just under 500 Soles. None of us had an easy time getting there -- if you don't hand a phone to your driver and have him get directions from the restaurant, you're in for an adventure.

RT,
I thought all the hoopla, police, and fine service was for the First Annual PCH Dinner. The diginiteries showed up AFTER we were seated.
It was a nice dinner, good company, and overall nice evening. Blissman even used his knife and fork......

RT here. These were a few dishes from a recent dinner: Conchas a la Parmesana, Pollo Saltado, Picante de Mariscos, Lomo Saltado and a Parihuela. It was all aswesome, as always.

RT, although I am proud to have some Peruvian blood in my veins, I still have a big problem with any ordinary place trying to charge outrageous premium prices for food that is prepared for me as a casual after thought whim on regular basis. I just cant picture myself paying $20 in PERU for a aji de gallina, lomo saltado or tallarines con biste.

I see your point, what with a plethora of very inexpensive places all throughout town.
Jose Antonio, however, should still be on anyone's dining list. Yes, the food is standard Peruvian, but it it of the highest quality and is far from casually prepared. And you're getting good service and clean tablecloths and that kind of stuff, which does have a price attached to it.
Many of my Peruvian friends say, "yes, this is the food I've had my entire life. But never quite this good."
But it is true that I could eat well in Lima for less than half of what I usually spend on my trips.

RT here. From a recent visit, a shrimp appetizer (don't remember what it was), anticuchos, Aji de Gallina, Lomo Saltado (that's the smoke rising from the dish), and Rice with Seafood.
