Alvero the taxi driver.

One night when me and my novia were heading back to the Medelln Mansion after dinner at a resturant in Parque Lleras. We hailed a taxi and were picked up by Alvero. Now when ever I get in a taxi in Medellin I always ask if they speak English. When I asked this of Alvero, to my astonishment, he started conversing with me in perfect english. He informed me that he had lived in the U.S. for several years and learned english during his time there. Upon arrival back at the Mansion I introduced him to Greg the owner. Since he could speak english perfectly he was asked if he would be one of their drivers. I heard they had a falling out and he doesn't work with them too much anymore.

Now when I say he speaks perfect english I don't mean knowing alot of words and being able to figure out what your saying after a few tries, like alot of Colombians, I mean perfect english. I used Alvero as my private driver the rest of the time I was in Medellin, he was a great tour guide. He translated for me and I had no problems at all it was great. Now that Ive returned home, I keep in touch with him and he does me favors every now and then. I sent him 600,000cop, 550,000cop for him to take my novia to get a TV and 50,000cop for his time. Everything went fine he picked her and helped her pick up the TV and even installed it for her. He also has a friend who is a college professor who is going to teach her english for free Im just paying for the books which are pretty cheap. Alvero will also pick you up at the airport and deliver you safe and sound at your location. He is completly trust worthy and as alot of you know it is hard to find someone like that in a foriegn country.

A Noob in Need of Info

I was going to go to Nueva Lengua in CTG (www.nuevalengua.com), but I emailed the school and they still do not have an english speaking instructor. They do in MDE. Anyone else have any alternatives? AZ

I gave him 60,000cop drive me & my novia to the airport wait 4 3hrs with us till it was ready to leave then drive my novia back home. I never paid him more than 50,000cop for most of the night which included several clubs, but I also bought him dinner and non-alcoholic drinks.

Let me also recommend another friend of mine. His name is Jason. He is 25 and speaks english, it is not as strong as Victors but good enough to help you meet girls, show you around and help you with other tasks you may have. seems like all the translator, drivers etc quote around 20,000 pesos an hour around 9 bucs currently I would imagine you can negotiate a flat fee for the night or day. Also you have to feed them of course and pay their entry into clubs but invaluable to have a colombia with you if you want to talk to regular girls out in town or especially if you venture far away from the tourist areas, I have literraly collected hundreds of phone numbers while living here in Medellin and 10 times better when I have a colombian friend with me vs all americans.
