I know some of you have businesses and/or pensions you may be living on. I am about to retire in Medellin Colombia but a few of my friends really want to try BA, so my interests is piqued.
My wealth, at a very conservative 6%, generates about $25K per year. This will allow me to live OK in Medellin, I'd be interested in seeing how it would do in SEA.
I'm also looking at working part time as an English teacher as well, not really for the money but to keep my brain active. But I anticipate I can proably earn $400 US per month assuming the average wage divided in half because of the part time work.
Thanks guys. Don't be shy, most of us are basically anonymous here.

Dunno about BA, can give you an idea for Porto Alegre - a relatively expensive city in SOuth Brasil. $25K a year will give you a very good, but not great single lifestyle. I.e. 25K (tax-free of course!) will get you about what a 75-80K salary (after taxes - 50K) gets you in an everage city in the States (think Philly, Cleveland, Milwaukee... not Miami, LA, NY, Boston where that money is nothing). No caviar and hookers every night, but not barely scraping by either.
As for teaching English, you won't get US$400 a month unless you do it full-time and take on a lot of private students. If you just want to keep your brain goign(and meet single girls ;-) ), then try working at one of the many English Language Schools (dunno what they are in BA... Brasil they are Fish, Wizard, etc). You own't get paid squat but you'll have lots of fun. The British Embassy in each country (except US, of course) sponsors/partners with a English "cultural center" known in Brasil and Arg. as "Cultura Inglesa"... (the French and Germans do the same thing)... those are really good to teach for because the environement is pretty good and the students come from further up the economic ladder. Of course, depends what you are looking for, "Trashy girls" (my favorite) are probably easier to find at a "Fisk"-type school.
Again, all these comments were made with experience in southern Brasil. Argentina is different, but basically the same socio-economic dynamic.
Good Luck!

You can live well in BA for US$1.2k/month.
This will allow for a few whoring jaunts at the moderate casas. Hundred dollar pussy, upscale restaurants, shopping for brand-name fashions, and nightlife are extras.

Bendejo,
How is the non-pro scene in BA?

Sniper: definitely do-able as long as you don't come off as a complete grand dad. If you're 40 and looking for 21, probably not so good, same as anywhere else. Then there is the problem of shaking them off. As the old chestnet goes, you're not just paying them to stay with you, you're paying them to leave.

I am really interested in the non-pro scene. I usually go for girls in their late 20's or early 30's.
I should also say that I don't drink or smoke. I am ok with 1 $100 pussy jaunt a week. The rest can be spent going after non-pros.
I know in Colombia (my favorite destination), I can go to expensive casas for $30-$40. A great value.
I just keep reading that BA is one of the cheapests costs of living in the world so its so enticing. But everything I read seems that Medellin might be cheaper.

Never been to Colombia so can't compare.
It seems the $ devalued 5 years ago but was not followed by a great inflation, which is why it is so cheap.
I don't do the high-end pussy scene so can't evaluate that. I don't like bar scenes nor the rent-a-girlfriend stuff, so the casas suit me fine. These come out to about 100 pesos and hour, sometimes less. The street scene is cheaper, but when you factor in the cost of the room etc it comes out to about the same.
Even if you speak Espanol you'll have to pick up the local dialect.
BTW, I keep hearing that the economic recovery there has about peaked, so the current is scuttlebut is don't expect a sudden surge in the exchange rate.

Anyone care to give us an update on this topic?
I hear everything is getting higher.

Rents are higher, pussy is higher and therefore cost of living higher. I've been going since 5 years ago and things have changed radically in the 5 years. So much, I decided to sell my apartment there and not return.
