There are a bunch but here are 3 that I saved the address to.

1. Here is the closest internet cafe to the Rio Roiss- www.tudoefacil.com.br (they seem to have a lot of useful info on their home page as well).

Rua Xavier da Silveira, 19 - Copacabana
522-3970

They have a 2nd cafe at Av Prado Junior, 78
Copacabana. This is one the same street as all
the popular strip joints.

2. Rua Barata Ribeiro 489 - Sala 21
Copacabana Tel 257-1963. This one is relatively close to the Rio Roiss as well.

3. This one is around the corner from the Marriott. The Marriott is in the middle of the Copacabana beach.
Rua Domingos Ferreira, 59 loja B, Copacabana.
Tel 547-4946.

Lido is a club on the west side of Lido plaza in Copacabana. The Holiday club is in the same building on the Avenida Atlantica side. Both have over the years degenerated from first class clubs like Barberella and Franks into bars where you can still watch live sex shows (all boiates used to have them)and have sex or at least a blow job in your booth.

In December Lido redecorated and instituted elaborate steps to keep the waiters and bartenders from ripping you off. Drinks were reasonably priced with prices posted and they installed six computers dispursed throughout the bar. Internet access is free as long as you buy one drink. My challenge is to chat on ASPT while getting a bj at this club. The Lido opens late and would probably be completely vacant before 10 PM. Because of the time zones this challenge is only possible during our summer, their winter.

The internet cafe has very good bandwidth.
I listened to the first half of Chargers-Broncos game. One hour will set you down by maybe 9R.
Opens every day 10:00 to 22:00 except sun 15:00 to 21:00

For those of you missing the nfl during fall action, Help shows espn international so go inside Help and you can watch the Sun or monday night game on the big screen while interviewing garotas.
There is 6 hours difference right now with CA due to daylight saving time. So Sun night game starts at 11:30 pm local time and mnf at 12:00 am.
I caught the last mn of the game between Ravens and Titans in my hotel room, my honey asked me if the United States were winning.
ESPN sportscenter is also shown on mon around 1:00 or 2:00 pm so you can watch the weekend highlights, better than internet cafe as nfl.com is a bit slow.

Something several friends of mine have done when they go to Brazil: establish some email correspondences with "pen pals" first before you get there. Then use their internet access ... hey! if they got email they got internet usually! You can do this with fellow mongers, with folks who'll just let ya browse privately (if you don't mind leaving incriminating traces on their hard drive), or (in a more limited manner) with chicas. And with travel agents. Travel agents love to have their clients come visit them.

I'll be taking my laptop with me on my upcoming trip for notes and maybe to download photos.

Does anyone know if there's internet access from the Debret's rooms or if they have a business center you can get online via ethernet? From the looks of the Debret's site, it doesn't appear they do.

Are there any nearby cafe's where you could hook into their network?

Thanks,

HC1

Hombrecito I will be staying at the Debret also Sep 14 to 20. Do you feel it would be safe to leave the laptop in the room? I'm sure there are some I cafe's close by? I also look forward to the responses. Thanks - Hemp

On my first trip, I used the phone in the room at the Rio Roiss. I left my laptop in there too, no problem. Tudo e Facil (around the corner from the Rio Roiss, 3 blocks from the debret) lets you hook up your laptop via ethernet. Fone Rio does not.

What do you guys do for Internet access with a laptop in Brazil?

If you have AOL there is local access in most of Brazil, but it cost an extra $3.00 per hour.

It is real easy to run up a $75 - $100 tab surfing the net, and getting e-mails if you are on an extended trip.

Thanks Dood.

I have AT&T business account which doesn't charge for international access. They have an acess number pretty much everywhere in the world.

Right now though, I have a phone line in my apartment, I signed up for AOL Brazil, (R$39.99/month, first 2 months free) and use that now.

Tudo y Facil is a little more expensive than Fone Rio, but if you have an Ethernet jack, you can plug your own laptop into their network, so it's probably the best deal overall. I think the cost is 6 Real/hr or something like that. It's also around the corner from the Rio Rioss and about 3 blocks from the Debret. Connection was consistently fast around T1 speed.

Tudoe Facil offers packages for internet use. i.e. 50 reals for 10 hours (use anytime). That works out to less than $1.50 US per hour. This is convenient because you can walk in and sit down at a computer without registering each time.

The regularly rate is 2.50 reals for the first 15 minutes, 1.50 reals for the next 15 minutes, etc. The location on Rua Xavier de Silvera (near Help) has English speaking staff and the guys like to hear our exploits and see our pictures.
