A little history of Rio
Here's a really cool photo of the Brasilians literally washing away the old Castle Hill (Morro de Castillo) in 1922. Amazing to think they leveled a hill, dumped it in the bay to form the area that turn into Santo Dumas airport, then built a big part of today's downtown.

Cat,
That is pretty interesting. Any idea how long the process took?
Here's a link on where I pulled these pics:

Like a lot of cities on the water in the Americas, the way they are today is very different from their original, natural condition. I was really surprised years ago when I learned that Boston was originally an island, and when people look at photos of Washington DC taken prior to 1850 or so, they are always amazed. Centro Rio has gone through some massive changes in the last 100 years.
Unless I am seriously mistaken, Boston was not originally an island; downtown Boston was located on a peninsula. I distinctly remember my history teachers talking about the "Boston Neck" and how the Americans blockaged the British into Boston proper at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. It is possible, however, that parts of Boston were located on islands. But you are correct Cat when you speak of the back fill into old Boston harbor and how different it looks today from the late 1700's.
Then again, I may not know what the hell I'm talking about.
EA
ps. I'm still trying to locate 4x4 on that map!

El Apodo,
Check the link to see a larger version of the map - I had to shrink it down to upload it per Hombre rules. The Centro streets are all there, although Rua do Carmo and Rua da Quitanda are a hell of a lot wider looking on that map than in real life!
I'm not sure of the period, but I prefer the old look Rio myself. These were taken off Google Earth, which by the way is an amazing software program if you have never used it before.

Cat, you and Arellious have posted some nice pics and links for viewing and info, thanks.
The "old Rio" look was pretty cool. Now if any of us had just bought that piece of land in the middle of the bottom pic(the clear spot)......

Looks beautiful. I wonder when the explosion of the Favela's happened?

They say the favelas started at the turn of the century by freed slaves and military veterans who did not have land. However, they really took off in the 70s when there was a large migration from rural areas to Rio.
Does anyone even know where Morro da Favela is? That was the first hillside shantytown and gave them the general name favela.
without the high rises, far less hookers wandering around...
If you look close, very very close, Get your nose right up on the computer screen, you can see the first Bob'S........really!
Meet a sailor today who visited Rio in '93 all he remembers about it was Club HELP (as he called it). Got me thinking, were the TERMAs around back them? Anyone remember what '93 Rio was like?
Although I first went to Rio thirty years ago ('81) I didn't learn of termas until 10 yrs ago. Better late than never.

CFK, I concur with you.
I first went to Rio in 1986, and didn't learn of the termas until 90/91. "Cum see, cum saw"!
Didn't really have the need for the termas and higher cost back then. The freelancer's GdP were so much sweeter back then. Much, much more GFE's! I miss them day's
