It looks like I am going to be in Rio next week (March 6 - 10) on business. I have not been to Rio since the early 90's. I actually lived in Leblon from 1992 - 1994 when I was in my early 30's (you do the math). I know things have changed plenty so I'm sure things will be significantly different. Since I'm going on business and don't have a lot of extra play time, I want to be able to maximize the visit and not waste time with bad experiences. To makes matters even more challenging, I'm travelling with two other guys that I hardly know so I have no idea how much time I will have for fun. I'll either be staying at the Marriott which I believe is guest friendly, or some Apart Hotel in Ipanema, so I'm ok in that department. But here's the kicker - in the middle of the visit I need to make a one night trip to Belo Horizonte so you can see my dilemma. Not a lot of margin for error. I'd like to hit a Termas but doubt I'll be able to partake more than twice. At the risk of sounding like an asshole, I don't mind paying more for a "quality" experience. For the past few years it's been nothing but Russia and the FSU for me so I'm used to getting hosed on price. From the comments recently, it sounds like Centaurus or L'homo are my best bets. Perhaps Solarium. Anyone have any more recent intel for an old monger? Brazil Specialist - what does the local boy say? Should I forget the Termas and just "order in"? I seriously doubt I'll have time to get "take out" unless my travelling collegues are mongers as well (I should be so lucky).

Looks like we are staying at the Visconti on Prudente de Morais in Ipanema. Catocony - did I see that you stayed there for a few nights? Is it Girl friendly?

I stayed there almost 3 years ago but was with a girl the whole time, never brought in GdPs for the night. I think the prices are all for double, so there may not be a garota fee. However, if you're traveling with people from work, I advise you not bring garotas back unless you're sure of the guys you're with, which it seems you don't know. Your best bets are to just make termas runs.

As far as termas, your post above is erronious. Solarium has been bad for quite some time, Centaurus is a clip joint and Luomo has had quality issues as well. Your best bet in Zona Sul is Monte Carlo, head up to Luomo as well and see how the quality is. If you haven't been there in a long time the quality is probably great for you. Avoid Centaurus, don't bother with Solarium. Escorts are iffy but if you do want to order in, head to a love motel to avoid potential problems with the guys you're traveling with.

I thought 65 was horrible, as my former favorite termas (for 3 straight years) it was tough to see it in such shape. Lots of retread GdPs from the Zona Sul termas, lots of fuglies. That place was the best but they never did a great job of replenishing the talent. They had a mass wave of garotas leave and they're left with a lot of shit.

4x4 was the usual, same as always. WalMart has an aisle for everyone.

Cancun looked good, and I spent a couple of afternoons roaming the massagems and sex apartments along Rio Branco. Very hit or miss, always is.

I havent been there since december, the visconti is a nice spot was with the gf when I stayed there so not sure about guest frendliness , my takes on the termas are the opposite of cats with the exception of cancun, especially if money isnt an issue , luomo was great from october to december of last year , cancun was good as long as you dont go when its busy then have to wait while 500 brazillians pay with debit cards and argue over the bill , I had fun at solarium the 3 times I went, monte carlo was so bad I didnt fuck anyone but I left there december 3rd solarium is very close to the visconti

I'm not sure if this classifies as a report or a follow up to the current thread, but I just got back home from Rio. As predicted, the style was cramped because of the work colleagues. We stayed at Visconti and it was quite nice. You really can't beat the location if you are looking for something a bit more low key with good access tot he beach. Tuesday and Wednesday night were all business but on Thursday night we were drinking and eating at Conversa de Fiada on Maria Quiteria. We managed to get the boss to go to bed early (midnight) and one of the local clients we were drinking with suggested we visit HELP "just to see what it was like". What a meat market! Truly something to see but not really my style. Seriously I'm getting a little too old for that but WOW there was some prime talent there. After 30 minutes or so we split and went down to Barbarellas "just to see". After an hour or so I was walking out the door with Ashley. She wanted R600 for the night and I initially balked. I tried talking her down but she would not budge. She seemed quite happy to sit and sip Red Bull all night. She must have had me pegged because I was getting sleepy and had been drinking chope all night and had recently switched to Black Label Scotch; I was ready to leave with someone and she knew it. The room rate was $180 a night so that was a nice surprise that there would be no extra guest charge. I suppose that didn't shock me as I saw plenty of other "guests" at the hotel earlier in the week.

Barbarela isn't a come-and-go joint for GdPs like Help. If they don't show regularly they don't get in for a while. It's certainly not termas rules for the garotas but if they're going to work out of there they have to show up more frequently than "whenever they're horny".

I for the life of me cannot understand how guys can read the info on this site, solicite advice from us, then go to Rio and do the absolute wrong thing. I know in the heat of the moment the little head can take over but for fuck's sake, don't get hosed over like that. Add the $50 for your CH membership to those ultra-expensive programs, because you wasted that money as well.

You can never be too old for Help (I'm sure I'm older than you are and LOVE the place). The going rates are much more reasonable, too, and usually subject to negotiation. Why, you just approach a garota that catches your fancy and use the always-effective pick-up line, "Quanto?"

Help offers an easily adapted style--you can buy your prospect Red Bulls there too, and get to know her a little. You get to scope out more garotas while standing in line to buy the tickets (although she'll probably be at your side). And you're generally less committed because you're STANDING and talking, not sitting at a table, so you can walk away more easily.

Perhaps Riojake would do well to check out Vila Mimosa. I'm sure with his "negotiation skills" he would be able to reel one in there for R$100 reais or so.

What I love most about you guys is your brutal honesty. But let’s not get carried away here. True – this was not a bargain encounter, but going to HELP and Barb’s was not MY idea. Time was clearly not on my side on this trip. (Did I mention that we squeezed in an overnight trip to Belo Horizonte as well?) I would have much preferred to go to the Termas at 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM and then swing by HELP at midnight as you all have so carefully documented in great detail. But midnight is not the ideal time to start a Termas run now is it? Especially when your Carioca client is inviting you to Barb’s.

And for the record – I never saw the bill at Barbarella’s so I couldn’t tell you how much was paid. The Carioca client picked it up. Incidentally, in the cab ride over to HELP, I asked my Carioca client if we should hit the Termas, and he said that it was waaaay too late that that we should go to one in Centro next time right from his office before we go to dinner. Makes sense.

BTW – at Barbarella’s Ashley told me that she was 26. It was not until I quizzed her between round #1 and #2 that she came clean on age. But hell, she could have been even older than 32 for all I know. Oh, and I did find her phone number after all.

Again, I appreciate your comments and deserve every one of them. I was on a tight schedule and am thankful to even had the time to go “around the bases” with Ashley at any price. The last thing I needed was to get my laptop ripped off by some barely post pubescent drama Queen from HELP. The boss pretty much stuck to me like glue the whole trip so I feel pretty lucky all things considered.

The next trip will be very different. Ditch the (non-mongering) boss – allow more time for play (BTW – turns out my local Rio clients are ALL into the Termas scene) hit the Termas early and swing by HELP in a more “relaxed” state. I get it guys – your advice is not wasted. Lack of time can be a bitch – Although in hindsight, VM might have been a more efficient option as LA Guy suggests. You owe your client a big one then. Unless they've raised the entry fee, it's R$60 per person. You're supposed to get some drinks with that but the waiters tend for forget that when computing the bill. If you take a garota out you're hit with a second R$60 for "her entry". It's not a barfine, you're just graciously picking up her entry fee. Note that if she doesn't get a program that night, she has to stick around till 4:00 AM or whenever the joint closes. If she waits till closing she's not dinged, if she wants to leave alone before then she's got to pay at least some portion of the entry if not all of it.

As far as drinks, Red Bulls and Scotch are really expensive - probably R$12-14 per Red Bull - and if they're doing Hedgy-Hedgy (Red Bull and scotch) that could set you back R$30 per drink. So if you guys were doing even a moderate amount of drinking with the garotas joining in, that was a huge bar tab. Your client didn't get shafted on mystery drinks due to being a carioca but just the standard prices there are enough to pop your eyeballs out. For tourists the bill's even worse because they throw all kinds of extra drinks and random service amounts in there and unless your Portuguese is good you'll never get it straightened out.

So next time in town you'll have to take him to 65 or 4x4 or wherever and pick up his entry and drinks.
