I often rent a car to visit various places in Barra de Tijuca and other parts of Rio - the taxi's get a little expensive - and prior to hitting my regular spots like Nuth, Downtown Shopping, etc, I head down the street that follows the beach. I have done this on a few occassions and had pretty good luck with nice looking girls. So far I have not run into a TV. As far as being robbed, I always limit the amount of cash on me and stash any excess. This pretty standard stuff hopefully for most. Usually when plans take me to Barra (I really love Downtown Shopping on Friday and Saturday night, with lots of live music places)I just rent a car. Cheaper then taxi's and a hell of a lot more convenient then buses.

I hear the travestis in BTJ/Recreio are all wearing Ronaldo jerseys these days, so that should make them easier to spot
