Can you just buy a sim with some time on it for your US cell phone

You have to make sure your phone is unlocked and is a quad or triband.

Does the phone company have to unlock it?
It is a quad band so I am covered there. I used it before in Argentina but had Cingular coverage and I roamed. It was pricy for calls

Look for unlock code for your type of phone on ebay and then when you get to BA just buy a sim card and time.
Roaming will kill you in fees if you use your cingular there.

Are you using T-Mobile or AT&T? AT&T will give you the unlock code as long as you've had the phone for 30 days.

They will give you the code immediately if you have had your service for more than six months.
