Thanks for all the excellent tips and advice on the sites. I'm planning a Rio trip and would like to either visit another Brasilian city (Salvador?) or Buenos Aires. I could fly home from B.A. or roundtrip back to Rio. Varig, Tam and Aerolineas Argentinas show flights for $400+ for both return and one ways. Is this the best price or is it cheaper to book from Rio?
Any advice or recommendations welcome.

I agree, fares are quite expensive given the distance involved. It's not easy to avoid the high fares on major airlines.
In the past Swissair have been a (slightly) cheaper option on days their GIG flight goes onto BA. Alternatively, use some FF miles on Varig or TAM.
I believe there are some budget carriers with cheaper fares on this route. However, I don't recall the carriers or the approximate fares.

Does anyone have a good idea what your best bet on a cheap flight between Cancun, MX and Rio is? That is, what airline? I'm stuck with a ticket to Cancun, and trying to make the best of it...
Thanks in advance...

I recently used 25,000 AA miles to do it on TAM airlines...
