bump...i could use this info as well...never been for new years and i'm curious how the mongering is during that period...12/25-1/2 are my proposed dates

For New Years you're going to have to pay for a block of days, at least 3-4 even in an apartment. So if you plan on leaving on the 2nd, you'll probably end up paying for a night or two that you won't use. And all lodging prices are roughly doubled during New Years.
I find it the worst time of the year to be down for mongering purposes. Everything is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, plus New Years Eve and I think day as well. Help is open on Christmas but that place is such a fucking shithole these days that on Christmas there will just be the most desperate dregs of the dregs working.

Double the prices, it's more like triple and then generally 7 days required, even worse. Having said that New Years in Rio is great, everyone should experience it at least once.
It's the prices and BS minimum stay that are the negative factors.

appreciate the speedy responses and input fellas, thank you...
i'm not worried about prices too much, nor the minimum stays, as i'm using miles for both the flight and the hotel stay (though the sheraton rio isn't necessarily ideal, the starwood points program pretty much rules, so i've got a week free stay there)...
i'm willing to pay a bit of an upcharge based on it being high-high season for the garotas (no need to be stingy since the most expensive parts of my trip, flights and lodging, are free...) i'm more just concerned about the amount of male competition for girls and the lack of girls working because they themselves might be on holiday.
i'm more of a quality over quantity guy anyway, so i don't mind having a couple days where my options for girls in general might be limited, i just don't want a full week of termas being half empty of girls, and having to scrape the "dregs" as you say to find someone to bang (if it's between an ugly girl and no girl at all, i'd likely read a book on the beach, hit up the beach vendors for some of that tasty fried cheese and some frozen acai with granola and hemp powder, pop a couple oxy's from the local farmacia and chill)...
i'll miss xmas eve and xmas day as i think i land morning of 12/26 because of the overnight flight and i really want to enjoy the festivities for new years eve and will probably be recuperating new years day anyway, so those aren't really big losses either...worst case, the escort sites/ agencies should still have some girls right? (though the quality from some of the reports and pics seems to be pretty lousy)...
again, if i can get 5 good days of mongering, even at higher prices, out of my run on the ground in rio from 12/26-12/2 (my flight is late that night, so i'd still be able to do an early run that day or maybe extend til 1/3) then i think i'd be happy...
my alternative is to head down from 12/18-12/26, but frankly that seems like a worse idea with xmas eve and xmas day, and it's a bigger pain in the ass for me work-wise.

Are you sure you have a free week's stay over Revillion? Have you already booked it? I'm shocked they would give away a room during a week where they can get paying customers to fork over $400 US a night minimum to sleep in a broom closet.

positive...they gave me a confirmation number and email and everything...i too was surprised...again, i think it's a reflection on just how tough times have gotten economically...not to mention, even without the economic downturn, flights to brazil right now from the states are outrageous...

Yeah, but my point wasn't Americans going down for Revellion - we're a very, very small drop in the bucket. I would say completely inconsequential. It's the Paulistas and Mineros and other Brasileros paying the big bucks for Rio on New Years.
I think the main point me and the other guys are making - it really is the worse time to go. CFK aside, and to be honest the general rule of thumb for a lot of us is that whatever CFK recommends, do the extreme exact opposite, it's a really bad termas week. Lots of garotas out, with the off days for the holidays, a lot just disappear for a week or so. For example, if you get in on the 26th, that's a Friday. The downtown termas should be open, but with the garotas off early on Wed and all day Thursday, then Sat/Sun off, a lot will just not be there on Friday. Repeat the following week. Out of your trip, probably the only good Centro termas days will be Mon and Tuesday. As far as zona sul termas, at least they'll be open that weekend.
If you can not go during the holidays, and go later or even earlier, that's a better choice. From my experience, yeah, Revillion itself is interesting but it's a one afternoon/evening shot. It's really the same as any other big one-day event, except you'll be gouged on prices. All restaurants are fixed-price and fixed sky-high, and unless you're staying in Copa, you're probably looking at WALKING all the way back to the Sheraton since the streets will be jammed and not a taxi or bus or van will have an empty seat, not that they would go anywhere with all the people.

damn...okay, a bit of what i was worried about.../sigh...that's the thing about holidays: you get the time off, sure, but so does everyone else, lol...
my window of vacation time is from 12/18-1/4 and i need to spend a week of that time with my family in s.f., so i don't have much wiggle room or choice on timing...
i may just have to suck it up and look at this as a great time to hang on the beach and grab some tasty meat at porcao or marius (hoping it hasn't gone quite as far downhill as some posts seem to suggest) and any garotas i manage to track down will be a bonus i suppose...kinda sucks though obviously...ugh...
anyway, again, thanks for taking the time to lay it out...i'll report back on just how depressing a trip it may wind up being, heh...who knows, maybe i'll find some hot tourista to bang for free! lol...
p.s. how scary will that walk back be during nye? i know the sheraton is a ways away, and across from one of the favelas, so i don't wanna ring in the new year getting conked over the head...i'm hoping with the throngs of people, there will be some protection, outside of the normal threat of pickpockets, etc...just not looking to get mugged, but staying in copa isn't an option for me (again, i'm using sheraton miles for this trip)

Getting out of Copa on New Years Eve is difficult, very difficult. Finding a taxi will be tough in getting back to the Sheraton. If you do I assure you will not pay the meter - you will pay what they ask. - Good Luck! - Hemp

Well, you'll be walking home with all the neighbors who live out by the Sheraton - a few thousand favelados from Vidigal.

How much does protection cost?--payment to the bodyguard faveldo to be made from the safe at the hotel....

I was very close to book New Years in Rio this year, thanks to CFK's urging. But after getting prices on apartments and such, it just not worth it. And as Cat said, its really just a day and a night of party and what if it rains? Besides the week between Christmas and New Years a lot of the talent goes home to be with family. So after careful consideration ( 2 or 3 minutes) I decided to go 2 times once in the beginning of December and once in late January, probably spend about the same as one New Years trip.
