Some friends from Texas stayed at the Hotel Yamallel a couple weeks back, and seemed pretty happy with it. None of the clubs are more than a 15 peso taxi ride, and if it's not too hot and you have comfortable shoes, I'd say all of Centro is with a 15-20 minute walk.
The room was kind of like a budget hotel in the US. Of possibly utmost importance this time of year, the A/C CRANKED. They also have free internet for guests (and their tag-along amigos).
And re: girl friendly, I don't know anyone that has tried, but I don't think anyone would get too suspicious if you had a guest with you that happened to be female.
Though I have never stayed here myself (I almost never stay overnight in Centro Monterrey), I would definitely recommend this place for an out of town traveler who doesn't want to pay rich tourist rates.

I have stayed in the Yamallal, and can recommend it. The price was right ($38 a night).
Its a tiny bit out of the way, some distance from the bus station, but taxis are cheap.

Hotel Plaza del Arco has been used by Unspongebob and says the hotel is adequate, much better than the Yamallel and girl friendly, up to a point. He made good friends with security and has no problem to get girls in. But he has to anounce them at the front desk.

What is the name of the hotel that is right accross the street from the bus station? If you leave the bus station by crossing the footbridge and go towards Matehula, it is on the left hand side.
I stayed there once, it was pretty nice - about $50-65 I think. Didn't try to have any females over though.

Its called the Fastos Hotel...

Just back from Monterrey and stayed at the Plaza del Arco and must say that this hotel is very centraly located for most things. 7-11 for coffee and paper on the corner, KFC and Dominos around the corner. Internet use place for 20 pesos per hour accross the street, pharmacy next door. The centro bars are within walking distance.
530 pesos per night for double occupancy and 2 beds. Confirmed with email
This place is girl friendly, but you need to confirm with security on duty at the time that you plan on bringing in your date. I achieved this in the middle of the day with some help from a spanish speaking amigo named Regio, also tipped the guy 50 pesos as I was checking out and he was very greatful and I am sure there will not be an issue the next time I am in town which will be very soon.

First, I just want to mention some logistical things that may be of help to some you regarding hotel accomodations...
When I first arrived in Monterrey, I checked into my usual hotel, Plaza Del Arco located a Madero and Pino Suarez. But, I had been looking for an alternate hotel that offers an exercise room, and at least equal room accomodations to Plaza Del Arco. I am posting this information for those of you who may want other options there in Monterrey. I moved over to a new hotel on Friday morning. It's the Best Western Plaza Hotel, Ave. Madero 250 Ote Zona Centro. The phone number is (81)8125-4800, or you can visit them on the web at www.bwplazamonterrey.com.
It's located at Madero and Galeana. It is only about 6 blocks East of Plaza Del Arco on Madero. So, it is in the same relative area as I have always stayed before. In fact there may actually be a few more clubs within walking distance of the Best Western than are within walking distance of PDA. The room rate is about $4 more per night more than Plaza Del Arco, but you get a little nicer room, and there is an exercise room with weight machine, bar bells, dump bell set, and two bikes...so it pretty nice for the money. They also have two computers in the lobby(PDA only has one, and it is always occupied)where you can check email. Their brochure says "Centro de Lavado" so they may also have a washer and dryer there too, but I never really checked that out...Also, the restaurant at Best Western is considerably better than the restaurant there at Plaza Del Arco. My room cost me $52 per night plus tax for two persons, and the hotel does appear to be girl friendly. I had a girl meet me Sunday night, and I asked the desk clerks to let my girl come up to the room when she arrived. When she arrived at the front desk, she called my room first, I told her to come on up, and she came up without any problems. But, you may have to clear it first with the desk people, and you will have to purchase a room at the two person rate. If you arrive with your girlfriend, I don't think there would be anything said at all as long as she is dressed appropriately, and does not look like a New York City Street Walker...
I did not see any security personnel on duty. Everything seems to be within visual range of the front desk, and they take care of security concerns. Also, I notice that if you come back to Best Western very late at night, the front door is actually barred for security reasons, and the front desk clerk has to come and open the door for you. You just tap on the front door and he comes over to let you in, no problem, but it may pose a problem if a girl were coming to see you late, late at night. I don't think they would let her in to the hotel unless you cleared with them in advance.

Just a short update on the Best Western Plaza Hotel, and the issue of girlfriendliness. The Best Western Plaza Hotel at Madero and Galeana is girl friendly, but I would definitely prearrange things with the front desk clerk before you start bringing the girls back with you. You may want to give him a little propina just to make sure you don't get hassled at the last minute.
The reason I bring this up is...On my last trip to Monterrey, I was bringing girls in every night I was there. On the last day I was there, I actually was able to bring three girls to my room within a 12 hour period. The desk clerk acted like he was starting to get a little preturbed that I was having so much "good luck." So, maybe it's best to make sure they aren't going to give you any problems and mess up your plans. I recommend that you clear it with them first. I probably abused their cooperation on that last night I was there, and I didn't plan it that way...I mean, three girls in 12 hours is way too much for me to handle, but unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how your look at it, all the plans I had made with these girls previously during the day came together within that period of time, and I didn't want to put any of them off. I mean, usually, you have one or two who don't show up, so I was just playing the percentages and I ended up hitting the jackpot.
Also, one other observation, when the girl is ready to leave, you can accompany her out of the building so they know she didn't hit you in the head or something. Otherwise, they call your room to make sure it is OK for the girl to leave the Hotel. I like that kind of service, but it would probably be best to accompany her down unless you want to be disturbed by a phone call to your room by hotel security or the front desk. I would rather accompany my girl downstairs and out of the building rather than having them hassling my girl as she tries to leave. Anyway, that is another reason I would prearrange with the front desk and provide them with a small propina. Afterall, they are providing a nice security service, and they should be compensated for taking good care of us as we practice our hobby.
One of my girls actually told me that she sensed she was not welcome there. She definitely got a look from the front desk when I paraded her past him, and she was uncomfortable. So, I would definitely pre-arrange things with them so your girl isn't uncomfortable and so there are no hassles.

Stayed at the Plaza Del Arcos. Clean, quiet, and really nice staff. Did I mention that I lust after the young lady at the front desk?
There was a baseball tournement on, and a lot of young people (and adults) who needed the application of a bat to possibly convince them that running around halls, riding elevators, and generally being aholes is not a good idea. The walls are thick enought that it was still quiet in the room. No problem with the young lady who was kind enough to keep me busy most of Sunday night and Monday morning.
Did I mention that I lust after the girl behind the desk?
Given 20/20 hind sight, I think I would rather stay in the Hotel district, a 16.00 mn ride from Madero, and in the middle of some of the most interesting building and museums I have ever seen.
That said, Plaza Del Arcos is a good choice!
Did I mention that I would love to spend a bit of time with the lovely young lady at the desk?

The various Best Western options in Centro are decent ideas for a hotel stay, and several offer amenities like a small gym and internet access in the lobby. There are at least four locations, including the BW Plaza listed by Regio above. Rates run from 400-550 pesos depending on which location and rates are usually a little lower on the weekends.

Are there any hotels in Monterrey where the rooms are dirt cheap? What I mean by dirt cheap is, are there any hotels who charge say, the equivalent of $20.00- $25.00 per night?
If it sounds somewhat absurd, it's because when I was in Hermosillo Sonora, I found real cheap hotels which weren't listed on any tourist guide anywhere.
Master Bates.

Master
Monterrey is not Hermosillo. You should check Google Earth to understand the size of the city.
Monterrey is like Houston, Tx, expensive and wondering why it is that expensive.
I had a friend from Austin from another board staying at a short term "love motel" in the downtown area near all the clubs
I think he paid like 250 pesos per 24 hour period. I don't recomend that kind of places cause there is no security.
He said it was adequate and he did repeat a couple of times...
Want the name and adress???

Villagran St. between Arteaga and Carlos Salazar streets.
By Quilombo on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 07:17 pm: Edit |
I think there are a couple of places on Villagran and even a street or two over who may rent rooms by the hour, or five hour blocks, for whatever purpose. I remember a place in Ciudad Juarez, right by the bridge that offered just such services. A basic room, with a clean enough bed, for like 100 pesos to "sleep it off" before crossing the bridge. I'm sure you can find places like these in Monterrey near the bus station. Of course, all valuables must be kept on your person and door must be locked. Completely common sense stuff.
By Regio on Saturday, April 12, 2008 - 11:33 pm: Edit |
Those places are love motels.
Both at Villagran St and Villagomez.
Although I know that mongers have stayed there, they have only stayed like for one night or so.
They do not rent by the hour, they are not like TJ or Ciudad Juarez hotels.
They are not made for medium to long term stays.
They vary from 100 pesos to 250, even 450 pesos for 3 to 6 hours depending on the hotel, but I wouldn't trust at all leaving valuables at the room since the rooms have no inner locks.
