Besides Boystown NL also has a very strong downtown scene, which we seldom hear about. Keep in mind the following observations were made pretty much during the day and afternoon as I spent the nights in Boystown..but it should give you a point of reference.
Most of the clubs/bars are along the lines of the local type bars found on Art. 123 between Revolucion and Constitucion...full of locals and almost no girls.
Of the clubs that do offer more of what "we" are looking for (HAH!) The Herradura (The Horseshoe)on Hidalgo right off of Guerrero is the main one. Trying to compare it to a TJ club is a little difficult as it definitly has it's own personality, but in culture I'd put it somewhere along the lines of Miami/Las Chavelas. There's a large dance floor in the middle of the club, along the two longer sides of the rectangle are chairs for the girls to sit on, at the foot of the dance floor by the front door is a stage for the live band and the majority of the seating area is on the opposite side of the stage side, towards the back of the club, there is also a second floor with seating that I didn't explore as it was obvious it was empty during the day. There were a few pretty girls with that "I'm not really here" look in thier eyes and a lot of so-so girls who were more apt to smile back at you. They had TV sets scattered around the club, most showing porno. The beers were two bucks I believe, didn't buy any girls drinks so not sure of the prices. This is probably the only downtown club that gringos felt comfortable in, and towards later in the afternoon a few would filter in.
The other clubs, while pretty much in the same general vicinity are sprinkled around the neighborhood instead of being on one street like we're used to seeing on Callejon Coahuila in TJ. I was told the same guy owns a number of them and you could tell which were his cuz they had TV's with porno on 'em. The names I can recall of some of the other clubs were the El Rey, La Palmistra (guessing here, it meant little palm tree), Paloma, and another 7 or 8 or so whose names escape me. All pretty much the same though, smaller...no gringo's and a smattering of girls here and there. There were some cuties and I did eventually bring an El Rey girl back to the Reforma with me.
No strip shows that I could spot save at one club called La Casa. The front advertised a cover charge of 2 bucks after 10pm and private dances. It was closed during the day when I walked by so I didn't get a chance to check it out.
If you're comfortable with the smaller clubs on Callejon Cohuila in TJ you'd have no problem having a good time in Downtown NL.

Thanks for the info, Red... I have often wondered whats going on downtown duiring the day. Did the clubs have rooms, or was it strictly hotels?

Wilco,
I'd say The Herradura is the only club really worth checking out...most number of girls and most gringo friendly. There was no attached hotel but plenty of smaller hotels all around so I'd imagine they probably have a "favored" hotel that may or may not share a common ownership.
I only did one "downtown" girl, that was from the El Rey and I took her back to the Reforma. Actually she told me to go first and she met me at the hotel so apparently there is some kind of local heat...perhaps similiar to TJ's Revolucion.
No money up front and no bar fine from the El Rey....the other clubs no se. Guess I'll have to go back to NL and conduct further "research"...hah!

Went to the Horsehoe Friday night, newly reopened after their recent closure by authorities. Probably 20 girls lining the walls. Average 4-7's with one or two 9's there. Mostly Gordita/gorda/gorda gigante. Live band in the shell, Good groove, decent sound system. Not much action though. Porno on the TV's scattered around the walls. Kinda strange in this atmosphere. Novia bored and uncomfortable so left after one set. Good place to hang though if you like the bottom feeders. Women probably can be had for $20.00. They ain't worth more than that though. Horshoe is on Ocampo, about six blocks from border and one block east of main drag (Guerrero)
