What is the story with the elections? When are they and how long will the bars be closed?

I spoke to the mexican consulate in Phx. they told me the elections will be July 6th (Sunday). And they will be closed on the 6th only. They will not close Fri. at 10:00pm or on Sat. Of course "El Presidente" can change the policy at his discretion.......

You would think that the mexican consulate would have the right info but then again maybe not. In neighboring Baja California there will be no liquor sales on saturday or sunday and since these are federal elections it doesn't make a lot of sense to have a different policy in Sonora. Mexicali a city of almost a million people is only 45 minutes from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora and I think tens of thousands of thirsty cachanillas would pour into Sonora if this were true.
Puerto Peņasco would also be mobbed.

Just saw that Mexico will, at least officially, be dry from midnight Fri until midnight Sunday - http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0701nobooze-ON.html. Seems to be a federal law, so it should include TJ as well as Nogi. Sounds like you could still BYOB (up to 3 liters) though.

No it's not a federal law. Each state has an electoral law. Sonora is also having elections for governor and local mayors and legislators in additon to the federal congressional elections.

I ended up spending the July 4th weekend in Nogales, so thought I'd post a brief followup on this. Whatever the law does or doesn't say, Friday night (July 4th) was a completely normal night, as all bars were open until their normal closing time. The only real difference was a very heavy police presence. That and the Federalies looking for drugs in Placers. (Ever had to walk around the muzzle of an M16 when leaving the restroom of your favorite strip joint?) Oh well, for experienced mongers - that's Mexico. Let the party continue.
Saturday night, however, was completely different. Every bar was closed Saturday and Sunday. Nogales was as dead as it could possibly get, although a lot of the locals were still cruising the streets. Saw quite a few gringos get a rude surprise when they found out nothing was going on south of the border. Apparently not everyone got the word about the election laws. As for me, I ended up having dinner with Alex and El Negro, and just hung out with the locals for the night.

How are those two guys doing? Did you see Gilberto?
By Phoenixguy on Sunday, July 20, 2003 - 05:42 pm: Edit |
Didn't see Gilberto (but wouldn't know him if I did). Alex and El Negro are fine. Since they didn't have much else going on (with Nogales being completely dead), I bought them dinner at that restaurant on the corner just south of La Jungla. Oh - almost forgot - as we were sitting there who should wander by outside but Papa_C. The window was open so Papa_C hung out outdoors and he and Alex chatted for a while. The two of them had a grand old time kidding him about the 15 yr old chica walking by on the other side of the street being too old for him. ;)
