In the course of setting up my new corporate account with Enterprise car rental (Phoenix area), the sales rep was touting all the benefits of having a corporate accound (better rates, guaranteed reservations, free upgrades, etc.) and she mentioned that the cars can be taken into Mexico.

I muttered something intelligent along the lines of "say what????" and she went on to explain that, at the time of rental, you need to tell them you want to go into Mexico, and you have to purchase the Mexico insurance from them ($19.95 a day) on the spot.

Can't wait until I sell of some computers and can finance a mobile trip down there. This really opens up some possibilities and makes SG's along Obregon (who are very into dudes with cars) a viable option.

I've been taking a rental car (Avis) into Mexico for about 1 1/2 years now. I rent up here in the Bay Area and drive down but buy the insurance at an Avis place in Carlsbad because they don't offer the "Mexico Insurance" here in the Bay Area. For Avis, it starts at $xx.xx a day but decreases in price per day depending on the amount of days you get. On a side note, I have NEVER been stopped & checked for "rental insurance" either on the way in or the way out of Mexico.

Stay away from Alamo @ Tucson airport as we rented a full size car from them last weekend and they clearly stated that "you can not take the car to Mexico". I don't know if that's the policy for all rental company except Enterprise as mentioned above.

We rented a full-size from them for $31/day through the internet. By the time I closed out, the bill was $150 for three days. Almost $20/day added for an additional driver, concourse tax, airport taxes, and local taxes. One more thing, Alamo charged you $10.99/day ON TOP of the daily rental fee IF you keep the car an extra day. Other rental company would just be happy to have you keep the car as long as you wanted to get business and to earn more during this economic condition. Alamo just chased away 3 customers for life.

Dollar will let you take cars into Mexico for 25 a day extra. Of course, you can also just drive in, and if something happens run back to San Diego and report the car stolen.

I just bought car insurance for this weekend to drive into Mexico. $30 for 2 days. After reading the fine print - $15 of that is for an internet fee! The insurance was $15. Has anyone ever bought insurance on the border? Would a weekend be $15?

Avis policy states right on the contract "car not to be driven into Mexico"...

However, you can purchase mexican insurance for the Avis rental cars at the PHX or Tucson airports. Make certain to originally rent the car off airport to avoid many of the fees and taxes (try Mesa). Only up through a full size car is allowed into MX...no vans, SUVs, cadis, or convertibles.

Enterprise has 9.99/dy wknd promos...there are mlg limitations. Avis will rent the cars on wknd rates (generally Thursday noon thru Monday)at about 25.99 day plus the special insurance to be added at the airport.

I got a car away from the airport and still got slammed with tourist taxes. Somebody tried to steal my own car locally and it was an insurance rental.
