Wow I feel weird answering my own posting.. Given that I've never been to this city, I think my research yielded fairly good results. I am currently considering:
* Hotel Hamilton (about $15/ nite?)
* Hotel Hidalgo (no price info, but sounds pretty cheap n ghetto -- i.e. graffitti on walls)
* Hotel Imperio ($13/nite with a weeks commitment, doesnt appear to be guest-friendly, but oh well)
* Rooms for rent listings in El Informador paper (again, doubt they are monger or even gringo friendly, but hey... they are real mexican prices!)

Anything else to be added to this list?

Out of those listed, Hotel Hamilton is the best option. There is plenty of stuff to do within walking distance. There is a taxi stand in a small park about 2 blocks away. Hotel Hamilton is guest friendly.
