I recently visited Hermosillo. Drove down from Tucson during a heavy downpour on Thursday, September 7th. Due to the heavy rain the traffic was crawling in Tucson and it took me 1 &1/2 hours just to get out of the city.

The rain was evidently remants from Hurricane John. It stopped raining after I was about 20 miles south of the border so I thought I had escaped the worst of it.

I checked into one of my favorite No Tell Motels, Caribe. I had a great time with a favorita of mine that night in my jacuzzi suite.

The next morning, I awoke to find flood waters laping on my motel room door!

I put my truck in gear and headed for higher ground PRONTO! I am glad that I drive a pick-up as it is a little higher off the ground and, consequently, my engine did not flood out. I passed by a lot of other disabled vehicles that morning.

I went directly to my friends house and shop. I then realized that the section of Hermosillo where the flooding is always worse was where my No Tell Motel, Caribe is located.

It turns out that the elevation in Hermosillo slopes from the Northeast to the Southwest. Therefore, the area of town that has the exiting highway to Kino Bay is the lowest in elevation and is always the first area to flood.

The local newspaper had articles about very severe flooding in the coastal area of Kino Bay. The headline read: "Crisis por la SUPERLLUVIA".

These rains were not predicted by the forcasters. If I had known in advance that it was going to rain that much, I probably would have changed my travel plans.

I have been going to Hermosillo a lot lately because my new 12 hour shift schedule allows for a lot of days off most weeks. Just returned yesterday from a 4 day weekend there!

I usually don't spend a whole week in Mexico. Hermosillo is nice for two or three day get-a-ways. It is how I keep my sanity. My escape from the rat race. As soon as I cross that border I am in another world. I imagine, very similar to how SoCal dudes think about TJ.

My average spending total (MP chica; hotel; food; gas; etc) is about $300. I doubt if you can fly to the PI for that.

I understand what you mean about the money, though. I decided to postpone my next trip until November.

That's not bad. Maybe I'll have to try that early next year. My spanish is still really bad though so I don't know if I'd do that well.

Then again, you never know. Gotta wait and see how things turn out with my local girl first.
