I used holidaycity.com to arrange my stay in Sydney at two different hotels. I spent two days at the 4 star Metro followed by two days at the 3.5 star Pensione before continuing on to Melbourne.
The rate I received at Pensione was 106 AUD ($78 USD) per night for a standard double.
Of the two I preferred the Metro for it's location but Pensione for the price. The Metro was in a nicer part of town and there was more to do and see within walking distance. Also, a 24 iCafe w/ laptop connection was less than 2 blocks away. On the other hand, the Pensione was close to the markets where lots of good bargains were to be had. There were plenty of places offering internet connections near Pensione, but it was harder to find one offering laptop connectivity. The Pension Hotel offered connectivity, but I didn't use it...I don't recall why.
The public transport was pretty good so the location is probably not that important. I would more likely stay at Pensione again when I return unless I choose someplace new.
