I am right now on the ground in Sosua...an oftentimes underreported destination in the Dominican Republic. If you have not figured out by now, I can't put anything delicately so I will get right to the point. Sosua is the Black man's Angeles City. This is the city where the man of color can come and be with a woman of color on the cheap.
The hotel where you want to be at is the New Garden Hotel (www.newgardenhotel.net). This hotel is right in the middle of the action. To make a reservation, just send an email to my boy Omar at hotel.garden@codetel.net.do.
The main advantage of this destination, for some of us, is the plane flight is short. 3 hours from JFK or an hour out of the MCO...
Sosua is not the most economical destination. The surrounding area is a dump just like Angeles. The hotels are horrible. However, if you enjoy women of color then this is the place to be. Look no further. You can get a flight for $2-300 and my boy Omar will set up the ride from the airport.

Hi Portege.
How did your Facebook research work out for this trip?
You wrote about advanced Facebook research previously.
Just wondering.
Just trying to keep up with new research methods.
Thanks from all of us.

I have been to Sosua twice...and plan on going back. Actually, as a destination itself it is much nicer the AC...especially the beach at Cabarete and all the beach side restaurants and bars. I had some great experiences there, especially with a Haitian girl I stay in touch with. AC is a complete shithole - Sosua is much nicer, especially since it at least has a somewhat ok beach nearby. Now, girl wise....not even close to what you can find AC (AC is 100X better), but then again it doesn't take a full day in an airplane to get there. Perfect for a quick weekend get-away....
The New Garden Hotel is actually pretty nice...not a 5 star hotel, but perfectly fine for a weekend.
Black or white, Sosua is a great destination

If you want to dig into Latin America, learning SPANISH is a MUST. The whole experience will be different. Trust me, i've been there. Just buy a course on CD, and when on the ground, practice it with the ladies.

Considering that it is 25km from the airport, I would guess the taxi fee would be around $15 or less. Am I close?

A 25km ride from the airport in most Carribean countries in a private taxi would cost far more then $15.
The hotel taxi charges $15 for a 5km ride to Sosua and, according to the Blackbeard's website, taking the taxi from the airport to Blackbeard's cost $180. Most people take the bus from the airport to Blackbeards. However, even taking the bus costs about $50.

At first, $15 from the airport to the New Garden seemed like a little much, but the guys at the airport will charge you a lot more when they see your white skin and hear your American accent. My experience with taxi drivers in Carribean nations is very negative.
I would stick with the hotel's suggested method of transportation or else you might find yourself getting ripped off by the drivers at the airport. They know they will never see you again so why not rip you a new one?

I was right... you are stoned. STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER.
According to Blackbeard's website:
quote:Costambar is a convenient 25 minute cab ride from the airport. Cost is approximately US $35.00 - $40.00. We will be happy to pre-arrange your transportation from the airport – simply call us or e-mail us with your travel schedule.
The second 'way' talks about the bus option from Santo Domingo
quote:There are 2 ways that you can get to Puerto Plata from Santo Domingo. 1. You can take a taxi from the airport to Puerto Plata. This will cost you about $180.

I have a different theory about Portege. He is a member of a Christian fundamentalist group that is trying to destroy this board through an excessive number of postings containing inaccurate information and/or useless "advice."
Then again, maybe RT is right and he just is high on crack or something.

I hadn't considered your theory.
Let me sleep on it and get back to you.

I hate the taxi mafia.
The last times I was there I just took my luggage to the main road (it was the middle of the day).
One time I had only a carry on and just waited for one of the moto guys, a couple of bucks to Sosua. The other time a collectivo taxi...forget how much but less than $4.
Some of you guys may cringe at the possible safety issues with the motoconcho, agreed. Take the colectivo.
